AAA - Automobile Club of Southern California (Auto Club Enterprises) vs AAA - CSAA Insurance Group
Two AAA reciprocal exchanges split by territory, so your club picks the insurer. The Auto Club is rated A+ with a 2026 filing pending; CSAA is rated A.
Verdict
For most homeowners this is not a choice you make. Both are AAA insurers, both are reciprocal exchanges owned by their policyholders, and both sell only to AAA members through club agents at branches, by phone and online. Which one writes your policy depends on which AAA club serves your address. The Auto Club of Southern California exchange covers 13 Southern California counties plus clubs in Texas, New Mexico, Hawaii and other territories. CSAA covers Northern and central California and partner clubs in 23 states and D.C., including Nevada, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. It matters when you are moving, or reading the name on a declarations page.
They are close in size. In the 2025 NAIC data the Auto Club group ranked #16 nationally ($1.80 billion) and fourth in California (6.15% of homeowners premiums); CSAA ranked #17 ($1.72 billion) and fifth in California (6.02%). The financial picture differs: AM Best affirmed the Auto Club exchange's A+ (Superior) on April 29, 2026, and CSAA's A (Excellent), stable outlook, on July 22, 2026. CSAA has been A rather than A+ since a June 2016 downgrade.
California rate paths also differ. CSAA's Sustainable Insurance Strategy plan was approved in December 2025 for an average 6.9% increase from March 15, 2026, with individual changes of 0% to 10%. The Auto Club filed its own plan on April 30, 2026: an 11.2% average increase for single-family homes, cuts of 20.5% for condo owners and 27% for renters, and a pledge of more than 2,000 new policies in wildfire-distressed areas. It was under state review as of May 2026. Neither profile gives roof settlement terms, but the Auto Club says it may hold back depreciation on building losses above $5,000 and pay it once repairs are done, so ask both how roofs and contents are settled.

- Your home is in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego or another county the Auto Club serves, or in an affiliated club territory such as Texas, New Mexico or Hawaii.

- You value its published age-of-home and renovated-home discounts (up to 36.8% and 21% for Southern California members, per its site).

- Wildfire hardening is on your list: CSAA offers up to 12.5% off through My Home Hardening, and a Wildfire Prepared Home designation lets you keep your policy for at least three years.
- You want a rate plan that has already been approved, with a stated range of individual changes.
- You want an insurer that committed to quote about 1,000 FAIR Plan policyholders who meet its underwriting rules.
