AAA - CSAA Insurance Group vs Mercury Insurance
CSAA sells AAA members homeowners policies via club agents in 23 states; Mercury sells to anyone via independent agents in 10. Both got 6.9% California hikes.
Verdict
In California these two are close neighbors, ranked back to back in the 2025 NAIC data: Mercury third (6.85% of homeowners premiums) and CSAA fifth (6.02%). Both also had rate filings approved in December 2025 under the state's Sustainable Insurance Strategy, which allows catastrophe models and reinsurance costs in rates in exchange for writing more in wildfire-distressed areas. Mercury's was the first approved and CSAA's the second. Each averaged 6.9%: CSAA's took effect March 15, 2026, Mercury's in July 2026.
The difference is who can buy and how. CSAA is a policyholder-owned reciprocal exchange and sells home, condo and renters policies only to members of partner AAA clubs, through club agents at branches, by phone and online, in 23 states and D.C. Mercury is an NYSE-listed company (MCY) open to anyone, with about 8,510 independent agents plus its own AIS and PoliSeek agencies, and it writes homeowners in 10 states. The overlap is narrow: Arizona, Nevada and Oklahoma (statewide for CSAA) and parts of California, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
On coverage, Mercury lists extended replacement cost of up to 150% of the dwelling limit, scheduled property, service line, equipment breakdown and home cyber coverage. CSAA lists building code coverage, higher jewelry limits, a personal umbrella and flood through the agency, and in California earthquake placed with the California Earthquake Authority. Neither profile spells out roof settlement terms. Financially, AM Best affirmed CSAA's A (Excellent) with a stable outlook on July 22, 2026; Mercury's A (Excellent) carries a negative outlook since February 2025, and its profile also lists Moody's A3 (negative outlook).
Choose CSAA if
- You are an AAA member, or willing to join, and want home and auto from one AAA insurer through a local branch.
- You live in Northern or central California, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Pennsylvania or another CSAA state where Mercury does not write homes.
- Wildfire hardening matters: CSAA offers up to 12.5% off through My Home Hardening, and a Wildfire Prepared Home designation lets you keep your policy for at least three years.
- You want to buy earthquake or flood in the same visit.
Choose Mercury if
- You are not an AAA member, or you want an independent agent who can compare Mercury with other carriers.
- You live in Georgia, Illinois or Texas, which are on Mercury's list but not CSAA's.
- You want to bundle home, auto and umbrella and add extended replacement cost, scheduled property or home cyber coverage.
- You accept wildfire-driven pricing: the San Francisco Chronicle reported individual changes under Mercury's California filing from a 10% cut to a 60% increase.

Before you decide
Quote the same Coverage A, deductibles and endorsements from both, and ask whether either is writing new business at your address; California underwriting can turn on roof age and defensible space. Ask for wildfire-mitigation credits in writing. California's Sustainable Insurance Strategy explains the deal both took, home hardening for wildfire and insurance discounts covers what earns the discounts, captive agents, independent agents and direct insurers weighs club agents against independent ones, and how to compare homeowners insurance quotes shows how to line the quotes up.
