Allstate vs National General
Same parent, different doors: Allstate sells through exclusive agents and online; National General sells through 55,000-plus independent agents.
Verdict
Allstate and National General are not rivals in the usual sense. The Allstate Corporation owns both (National General since a $4 billion purchase closed January 4, 2021), and the NAIC counts National General's premiums inside the Allstate Insurance Group, which ranked #2 among U.S. homeowners groups by 2025 premiums ($17.77 billion, 9.40%, per NAIC data). What differs is the door you walk through and the policy behind it. Allstate-brand policies are sold by exclusive Allstate agents, online and by phone. National General is Allstate's independent-agent brand, sold by more than 55,000 agents who may also quote other carriers.
The policies differ in ways you will feel at claim time. The Allstate House & Home policy has used a roof payment schedule in many states since at least 2014: wind and hail damage to an older roof is paid at a percentage set by the roof's age and material, while a fire is still settled at replacement cost. National General emphasizes guaranteed and extended replacement cost on the dwelling, but neither profile shows National General's roof settlement terms, so ask. Allstate also lists loyalty features, Claim RateGuard and Deductible Rewards among them, that we did not find on National General's site.
Financial strength looks identical at the group level. AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) rating of the Allstate Insurance Group members on September 2, 2026, with a stable outlook, and National General says its companies are rated A+. But National General policies are issued by a long list of underwriting companies, some with legacy names, and its site says Allstate Insurance Company does not guarantee their financial performance. Read the company named on your declarations page. Allstate was not among J.D. Power's top three in 2025 or 2026; National General has no ranking.
Choose Allstate if
- You want a local exclusive Allstate agent, or prefer to buy and manage the policy online or by phone.
- You value Claim RateGuard (a claim alone does not raise your premium), Claim-Free Bonus of 5% back at each claim-free renewal, or Deductible Rewards of $100 off at sign-up and $100 per claim-free year, up to $500.
- You want named discounts such as Responsible Payer or early signing.
- You can accept a roof payment schedule and have confirmed how your roof's age and material are treated.
Choose National General if
- You want an independent agent who can compare Allstate-owned coverage against other companies.
- You want guaranteed replacement cost or extended replacement cost, Green Upgrade coverage up to $50,000, or Private Collections for scheduled or blanket collectibles.
- You want a private flood option, Beyond Floods, instead of NFIP alone: it is admitted in New Jersey and Florida and written on a surplus lines basis in about 30 other states.
- You accept several underwriting company names on your documents and discounts quoted by the agent rather than listed.
