Allstate vs Nationwide
Allstate sells through its own agents and rates A+ at AM Best; Nationwide sells through independent agents, rates A, and offers Brand New Belongings.
Verdict
The biggest practical difference is who sits across the desk. Allstate sells Allstate-brand homeowners policies through exclusive Allstate agents, online and by phone, so that agent can quote only Allstate. Nationwide sells almost entirely through independent agents, having moved its exclusive agents to independent status by July 2020. An independent agent can quote Nationwide beside other carriers, which makes price comparison easier; Allstate's agent can't do that, though Allstate also sells through independent agents under National General.
Size and footprint differ sharply. Allstate ranked #2 among U.S. homeowners groups in 2025 ($17.77 billion in direct premiums, 9.40% of the market, per NAIC data) and is a public company. Nationwide ranked #11 ($3.49 billion, 1.85%) and is a mutual owned by its policyholders. Allstate has written no new California homeowners policies since 2022 (an August 2026 filing is its first step toward reopening), and in Florida its policies come from Castle Key, which AM Best rated B (Fair) in September 2026. Nationwide has no homeowners quote pages for Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Alaska, Hawaii or New Mexico.
On the contract, Nationwide's endorsements are the more generous on paper: Brand New Belongings pays contents at replacement cost, Dwelling Replacement Cost can pay up to twice Coverage A, and Better Roof Replacement funds stronger roofing after a covered loss. Allstate's House & Home has a roof payment schedule in many states that pays wind and hail damage to older roofs on a percentage by age and material, plus loyalty features such as Claim RateGuard and Deductible Rewards. Nationwide's roof terms vary by state and underwriting company, so ask the agent which apply. Financial strength favors Allstate at AM Best (A+ against Nationwide's A), though Nationwide also carries S&P A+ and Moody's A2.
