Chubb vs Private Client Select (AIG)
Chubb is a publicly traded insurer with published high-value features; Private Client Select is an AIG-backed agency that does not publish its policy form.
Verdict
Both Chubb and Private Client Select (PCS) go after the same buyer: an owner of an expensive home, art or a collection who uses a broker or independent agent. Neither sells directly to consumers. How they are organized, and how much you can learn before you ask for a quote, is where they diverge.
Chubb is the insurer. Its U.S. companies, including Federal, Pacific Indemnity and Great Northern, issue the policy, and the group ranked #8 among U.S. homeowners groups in 2025 ($4.71 billion in premiums, 2.49% of the market, NAIC data). PCS is a managing general agency. AIG and funds managed by Stone Point Capital formed it from AIG's Private Client Group, and the deal closed July 3, 2023. PCS designs, sells and services the coverage, but AIG insurance companies issue the policies, so an AIG company appears on the declarations page. AIG's group ranked #34 ($954.1 million), and AIG notes that some PCS property coverage may be placed with a surplus lines insurer, which generally falls outside state guaranty funds.
Information is the practical difference. Chubb publishes its features: extended replacement cost that it says pays even if the cost exceeds the limit, a cash settlement option after a total loss, and a deductible waiver on covered losses over $100,000 in most states (the base deductible must be $50,000 or less; hurricane and other special deductibles are excluded). PCS does not publish its policy form or endorsement list, so you must ask the broker for the specimen policy and check replacement cost, cash settlement, code upgrades, wildfire or hurricane deductibles and how collections are covered. AM Best rated Chubb A++ (Superior) in September 2026. AIG's main insurers behind PCS carry A (Excellent) from AM Best (November 2025, outlook positive) and AA- from S&P. Chubb ranked 3rd in J.D. Power's 2026 home study; PCS has no ranking.
Choose Chubb if
- You want published, comparable terms: extended replacement cost, cash settlement and the deductible waiver.
- You want the higher AM Best rating, with S&P AA and Moody's Aa2.
- Claims scores matter to you: Chubb was 1st in J.D. Power's 2025 claims study and 3rd in 2026.
- You live in one of the 19 states where it offers Wildfire Defense Services.
Choose Private Client Select if
- Your broker already places AIG business, or you want homes, art, yachts and excess liability handled in one program.
- You want a specialist agency that evaluates each property, including local fire department response times.
- You have mitigation features that AIG's notices credit: in Colorado, 10% off the wildfire portion of the premium for a verified action such as an IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designation, and Florida windstorm credits.
- You are comfortable asking for the specimen policy before you commit.
