Chubb vs PURE Insurance
Chubb is a public A++ insurer with extended replacement cost; PURE is a member-owned reciprocal, rated A, that sends hard-to-place homes to surplus lines.
Verdict
Both Chubb and PURE Insurance insure expensive homes and sell only through independent agents or brokers, so a broker who works with high-net-worth clients can often quote both. The difference is in structure and in what happens when your house is hard to place.
Chubb is a publicly traded company (NYSE: CB), incorporated in Zurich, whose U.S. group ranked #8 among homeowners insurers in 2025 with $4.71 billion in premiums, per NAIC data. Its 2025 shareholder letter calls it by far the largest insurer to high-net-worth individuals. PURE is a reciprocal exchange owned by its policyholders, whom it calls members, and managed by an attorney-in-fact owned by Tokio Marine since February 2020. The NAIC group figure for PURE (#14, $1.95 billion) covers all of Tokio Marine's U.S. home writers, not PURE alone. PURE offers homeowners coverage in all 50 states, but homes that don't fit its admitted appetite, such as coastal homes, short-term rentals, homes under construction or those with prior losses, go to PURE Programs or PURE Specialty Exchange as surplus lines coverage. Surplus lines policies are not covered by state guaranty funds in most states and may not carry the member benefits.
On coverage, Chubb's homeowners policy, long known as Masterpiece, says it will pay to rebuild even if the cost exceeds the limit, offers a cash settlement option after a total loss, and waives the deductible in most states when a covered loss exceeds $100,000 and the base deductible is $50,000 or less (not for hurricane or other special deductibles). PURE includes water backup in its base policy, offers Subscriber Savings Accounts and a Member Advocate on larger losses, and can fund up to $2,500 for loss prevention. PURE's profile does not describe an above-limit rebuild feature, so ask the broker. On financial strength, AM Best rated Chubb A++ (Superior) in September 2026; PURE was affirmed at A (Excellent) in June 2024. Chubb also placed 3rd in J.D. Power's 2026 home study.

- Claims service is a priority: Chubb ranked 1st in J.D. Power's 2025 claims study and 3rd in 2026.

- You like the member-owned model and the chance that underwriting gains are credited to your Subscriber Savings Account.
- You want water backup included in the base policy rather than as an endorsement.
- Loss prevention appeals: Ting and water sensors, a Watertight Home Check and a Loss Prevention Benefit.
- You have a difficult home and want a broker-placed surplus lines option from the same group.
