COUNTRY Financial vs State Farm
Two mutuals with exclusive agents: COUNTRY writes 19 Midwest and Western states with open-perils choices; State Farm is the nationwide giant.
Verdict
These two are more alike in how they sell than in size. Both are mutuals, and both sell homeowners policies only through exclusive agents, so neither agent can quote the other. State Farm ranked #1 in 2025 homeowners premiums ($35.27 billion, 18.67% of the national market) and was the largest writer in 41 states. COUNTRY Financial, built by the Illinois Farm Bureau, ranked #26 ($1.23 billion) and writes homeowners in 19 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin. State Farm sells in nearly every state, so COUNTRY's footprint sits entirely inside its own.
Illinois is where they meet most directly. In 2025 State Farm held 33.68% of Illinois homeowners premiums and COUNTRY was third at 7.79%, behind State Farm and Allstate. State Farm raised its Illinois homeowners rates an average 27.2% in 2025 and filed a further increase of nearly 8%, effective for new policies October 1, 2026. COUNTRY's profile gives no comparable figure, so quote both.
The policy structure is the clearest difference. COUNTRY lets you choose Standard (named-perils) or Premier (open-perils) separately for the dwelling and for personal property, and offers extended replacement cost up to 120% plus a guaranteed option the company describes as having no cap, where available. State Farm writes on its own forms, builds inflation coverage into the dwelling limit, and sells water backup, earthquake and personal articles as add-ons. Both carry AM Best A+ (Superior): COUNTRY affirmed in August 2026, State Farm downgraded from A++ in November 2025, with State Farm General in California at B (Fair). Neither profile gives a roof settlement schedule; COUNTRY says to check for a separate wind-hail deductible and roof settlement before storm season.
Choose COUNTRY Financial if
- You live in one of its 19 states and want open-perils coverage on your belongings, or a policy that mixes Premier on the house with Standard on contents.
- Uncapped rebuilding protection matters; ask whether the guaranteed option is available in your state and what it requires.
- You have a hail-resistant roof or smart-home devices and want those rewarded in a long list of discounts.
- You want one local representative for home, auto, life and farm, and accept the unresolved Farm Bureau lawsuit and a CEO search that began in mid-2026.
Choose State Farm if
- You live outside COUNTRY's 19 states, or you want the largest property insurer's claims capacity.
- You want inflation coverage built in, plus a claims handler you can message through the app.
- Roof credits matter: State Farm lists Class 4 roofing in 26 states, wind mitigation credits, and wildfire discounts in California, Colorado and Oregon.
- You will check which State Farm company writes your policy in Florida, Texas or California; their ratings differ.
