Liberty Mutual vs Travelers

Both sell through independent agents; Travelers is a stock company rated A++ by AM Best, Liberty Mutual a policyholder-owned mutual rated A.

Verdict

Liberty Mutual and Travelers are the two large national home insurers that rely on independent agents, so the same agent can often quote both and put the offers next to each other. Liberty Mutual ranked #4 among U.S. homeowners groups by 2025 premiums ($10.40 billion, 5.50% of the market, per NAIC data), Travelers #7 ($8.62 billion, 4.56%). The ownership structures differ: Liberty Mutual is a mutual holding company owned by its policyholders, and Travelers is a publicly traded stock company (NYSE: TRV). Liberty Mutual also sells direct, online and by phone, and through Comparion, an agency it owns. Travelers sells through independent agents and brokers, with online quotes in many states.

Financial strength favors Travelers on paper. AM Best affirmed its main subsidiaries at A++ (Superior) on August 21, 2026, with AA from S&P and Aa2 from Moody's. AM Best affirmed Liberty Mutual's companies at A (Excellent) on September 10, 2025, with A from S&P and A2 from Moody's. Both are strong ratings; A++ sits two steps above A on AM Best's scale. Customer experience is mixed on both sides: Travelers ranked 20th of 28 homeowners insurers in J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Home Insurance Study, and Liberty Mutual's Safeco brand scored 571 against a 642 average that year. In the 2026 Property Claims Satisfaction Study, Liberty Mutual scored above the average, and Travelers did not place in the top three.

On coverage, both ask you to add contents replacement cost. Liberty Mutual's basic personal property coverage pays actual cash value, with replacement cost an add-on and withheld depreciation released after you send receipts. Travelers lists contents replacement cost as an optional coverage, along with additional replacement cost protection if the dwelling limit falls short of rebuilding costs. We did not find roof settlement terms on either company's coverage pages, so ask. Flood is separate on both: Liberty Mutual sells NFIP policies as a Write Your Own carrier, and Travelers offers private flood through Neptune Flood.
