Mercury Insurance vs State Farm
Mercury sells via independent agents in 10 states; State Farm sells via captive agents nationwide but has been closed to new California homeowners since 2023.
Verdict
For most of the country this is not a close comparison: State Farm is the largest U.S. home insurer ($35.27 billion of 2025 premiums, the biggest writer in 41 states), while Mercury ($1.67 billion, #18) sells homeowners in 10 states: Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia. California is where the two meet, and where the facts diverge. Mercury was California's third-largest homeowners group in 2025 (6.85%), behind State Farm and Farmers. State Farm General has taken no new California homeowners applications since May 27, 2023, although it filed on September 16, 2026 to accept homes with IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designations, and the California Department of Insurance said it was not yet open as of September 18.
The two are built differently. Mercury is NYSE-listed (MCY) and sells through about 8,510 independent agents plus its own AIS and PoliSeek agencies. State Farm is a policyholder-owned mutual that sells only through more than 19,000 exclusive agents. Mercury's December 2025 California increase of 6.9%, effective July 2026, was the first homeowners filing approved under the state's Sustainable Insurance Strategy, and the department said Mercury committed to more than 6,000 new policies over two years.
Coverage and ratings differ too. Mercury offers extended replacement cost of up to 150% of the dwelling limit as an option; State Farm builds inflation coverage into the dwelling limit. AM Best rates Mercury A (Excellent), outlook negative since February 2025, and rates State Farm's main companies A+ (Superior) as of November 2025, but State Farm General, the California writer, at B (Fair). Neither profile gives a roof settlement schedule.
Choose Mercury if
- You are a California homeowner who cannot buy State Farm because it is closed to new business, and you want an independent agent who can compare carriers.
- You want one package for home, auto and umbrella, plus extended replacement cost, scheduled property, service line, equipment breakdown or home cyber add-ons.
- You live in another Mercury state and want an independent agent to compare it with other carriers.
- You accept wildfire-driven pricing: the San Francisco Chronicle reported individual changes under Mercury's California filing from a 10% cut to a 60% increase.
Choose State Farm if
- You are outside California, or already a State Farm customer, and want an agent in town for home, auto and umbrella.
- You want inflation coverage built into the dwelling limit and a claims handler you can message through the app.
- Roof and wind credits matter: State Farm lists Class 4 roofing (26 states), wind mitigation credits and wildfire discounts in California, Colorado and Oregon.
- You will confirm which State Farm company issues your policy in California, Florida or Texas, because their ratings differ.
