Openly vs Travelers
Openly is an agent-only MGA selling HO-5 policies in 24 states with an A- issuing carrier; Travelers is a public insurer rated A++ in most states.
Verdict
Openly and Travelers share a channel: both sell homeowners insurance only or mainly through independent agents, so one agent can often quote both. Beyond that they are different kinds of company. Openly is a Boston managing general agent founded in 2017. It designs, prices and services the policy, but an unaffiliated insurer, Rock Ridge Insurance Company, issues it and carries the risk. Travelers is a publicly traded insurer (NYSE: TRV), founded in 1864, that ranked #7 among U.S. homeowners groups by 2025 premiums ($8.62 billion, 4.56%, per NAIC data). Openly has no NAIC rank of its own; the Clear Blue group behind Rock Ridge ranked #69 ($306.1 million, 0.16%).
The products differ. Openly's core policy is an HO-5, written open perils for both house and belongings, with guaranteed replacement cost up to $5 million in most of its states and liability up to $1 million. In Connecticut, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin the payout depends on your Coverage A limit and policy conditions. Travelers builds on the standard HO-3 and treats contents replacement cost and additional replacement cost protection as optional coverages. Neither profile gives roof settlement terms, so ask for them in writing.
Financial strength is the other split. AM Best affirmed Travelers' main subsidiaries at A++ (Superior) on August 21, 2026, with AA from S&P and Aa2 from Moody's. For Openly the rating that matters is the issuing carrier's: Rock Ridge held A- (Excellent) from AM Best (affirmed November 2023, ending a review over alleged fraudulent reinsurance letters of credit) and A- from Kroll, affirmed August 20, 2026. Travelers ranked 20th of 28 in J.D. Power's 2025 home study; Openly has no ranking.
Choose Openly if
- You own a well-kept, higher-value home in one of its 24 states and want an HO-5 with guaranteed replacement cost rather than an HO-3.
- You want blanket personal property of up to $100,000 per category at replacement cost, with a zero-deductible option.
- You use an independent agent and do not need condo, renters or auto from the same company.
- You accept an A- (Excellent) issuing carrier, and you do not own a home on a historic register, which Openly does not insure.
Choose Travelers if
- You live outside Openly's states, including Texas, California or New York, where Openly does not write, and you want a large national insurer.
- You want the highest AM Best grade, A++ (Superior), with AA and Aa2 from S&P and Moody's.
- You want to bundle home with auto, condo, renters or umbrella, or to quote online in many states.
- You want add-ons such as $25,000 identity fraud expense reimbursement or green home coverage.
