State Farm vs USAA

State Farm sells to anyone through local agents; USAA sells direct to military families only, with contents paid at replacement cost.

Verdict

The first question is whether you can buy from USAA at all. Membership is limited to active-duty and Reserve members, veterans with an honorable or general-under-honorable-conditions discharge, and eligible family members. If you qualify, the two companies are a real choice. If you do not, State Farm is open to everyone.

They are also built differently. State Farm, the largest U.S. home insurer (#1 for 2025 homeowners premiums, $35.27 billion, per NAIC data), is a mutual that sells only through more than 19,000 exclusive agents, plus online and by phone. USAA ranked #3 ($13.26 billion) and is a reciprocal exchange owned by its policyholder members. It sells direct, by app, website and phone, with no local agents. USAA was among the 10 largest home insurers in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico in 2025, while State Farm was the largest in 41 states.

On the policy, USAA pays contents at replacement cost as a standard feature, waives the deductible on a covered loss to military uniforms and gear for active-duty and Reserve members, and offers Home Protector, which adds 25% to the dwelling limit. State Farm builds inflation coverage into the dwelling limit and sells sewer or drain backup, earthquake and personal articles add-ons. Coastal wind is the trap on USAA's side: near the coast in eight states a USAA policy may exclude windstorm, and a separate policy is placed through the USAA Insurance Agency. On financial strength, the profiles cite different agencies. S&P rated USAA AA (Very Strong) in May 2025, down from AA+. AM Best rated State Farm's main companies A+ (Superior) in November 2025, down from A++, with State Farm General in California at B (Fair).

Choose State Farm if

  • You are not eligible for USAA, or you simply want a local agent you can walk in and see.
  • You want a claims handler you can message through the app, with eligible repairs available through State Farm's Select Service contractors (you may choose your own).
  • Roof and mitigation credits matter: State Farm lists Class 4 roofing (26 states), wind mitigation and wildfire discounts in California, Colorado and Oregon.
  • You want home, auto and umbrella with one agent, and are prepared to confirm which State Farm company issues the policy in Florida, Texas or California.

Choose USAA if

  • You qualify and want belongings paid at replacement cost, not depreciated value, without buying an add-on.
  • You want the military benefits: no deductible on covered losses to uniforms and gear, and a waiver when personal property is damaged or lost to war.
  • You are comfortable handling quotes, changes and claims by app and phone; USAA reports an average of 9 days to pay a catastrophe claim in 2025.
  • You live away from the Gulf and Atlantic coast, or you are ready to buy a separate windstorm policy there.
