Overview

Bear River Mutual Insurance Company is a Murray, Utah mutual insurance company that sells home, condo, renters, dwelling (rental and second-home), umbrella and auto insurance in one state only: Utah. It is owned by its policyholders and sells exclusively through independent agents; a quote request on its website is passed to the agent nearest your ZIP code. It does not sell direct, and it does not write outside Utah.

Bear River wrote $91.7 million of homeowners premiums in Utah in 2025, 6.52% of the state market, which made it the 7th-largest homeowners insurance group in Utah, according to NAIC market share data. It is too small to appear in the national top 100; within Utah it sits just behind State Farm, Farmers, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, American Family and USAA. Its homeowners loss ratio in Utah was about 55% in 2025, based on the same NAIC data.

The company is open about whom it wants to insure. Its own pages describe the home policy as built for "the most responsible homeowners" and the auto policy as aimed at the best drivers, and most of its discounts reward a clean history, a newer home and good credit. That makes it a selective, preferred-risk carrier rather than a fallback after a nonrenewal.

History

Bear River Mutual was established on July 1, 1909, along the Bear River in Garland, a farming town in northern Utah, at about the time Garland itself was founded. It was set up to give local farmers access to insurance at lower cost, and it calls itself Utah's oldest mutual property and casualty insurance company. Today it describes itself as Utah's oldest mutual for personal lines, and its head office is on East Winchester Street (6600 South) in Murray, in the Salt Lake Valley.

It has stayed a single-state, policyholder-owned mutual. The company says it uses positive results to keep rates low and to build policyholder surplus to absorb catastrophe losses, and it ties its motto, "Where Values Count," to the farm community it came from. In March 2020 AM Best described a multi-year profit improvement plan that had improved underwriting results and capital (see Ratings below).

Homeowners coverage

The home and condo policy covers the building, contents, appurtenant structures (sheds, detached garages, fences), loss of use, and personal liability, with medical payments to others, damage to the property of others and credit and bank card protection in the liability section. Bear River lists a set of additional coverages, including refrigerated property, rebuilding to code, electronic data restoration, landscaping and coverage for a home business, and your agent can raise the dwelling, personal property and liability limits.

Two optional endorsements are worth asking about. equipment breakdown coverage coverage pays to repair or replace home systems and appliances, such as an HVAC unit, after a mechanical or electrical failure. Buried utility line coverage, Bear River's name for service line coverage, pays for damage to underground water, sewer and gas pipes, buried connections and valves, and buried power and data wiring; the company notes it is an option, not part of the base policy.

The gap to know about in Utah is earthquake. Bear River does not sell earthquake coverage, and its FAQ says a standard homeowners policy does not cover earthquake damage; your independent agent has to place earthquake insurance with another company. Flood is likewise not something Bear River writes. For landlords and second-home owners, a separate dwelling policy covers rental homes, multi-family units and vacation properties, with liability built in and the same buried-utility option.

Discounts and savings

Bear River's home page lists nine discounts: age of home (newer homes), claims-free, high insurance score, mortgage paid off, mature homeowner, multi-policy, non-smoker, alarm and new purchase (for a recently bought home or condo). Most of them favor established owners with good credit and no recent claims, which is the customer Bear River is built around (see homeowners insurance discounts to ask about).

Eligible members can also get a LeakBot water-flow monitor and plumbing repair service at no cost. Bear River states that the device does not change your coverage or premium and that it does not currently offer a discount for it; the value is in catching a slow leak before it becomes a water claim (see water leak sensors and shutoff valves: discounts and value).

Where it sells and recent market moves

Bear River insures property and autos only in Utah. With 6.52% of Utah's homeowners market in 2025, it is the largest Utah-only writer in the state's top 10, based on NAIC data. That concentration is both its strength and its main risk: a hailstorm, windstorm or earthquake along the Wasatch Front hits most of its book at once, which is why AM Best has pointed to its reinsurance program as the offset.

Pricing in the Utah Insurance Department's 2025 homeowners comparison is competitive, with a caveat. For a hypothetical 10-year-old home with a $450,000 dwelling limit, Bear River's annual HO-3 premium ran from $890 to $956 for brick and $929 to $995 for frame across the four sample ZIP codes (Ogden, Taylorsville, Fillmore and Hurricane). The department notes that Bear River's figures use a $2,500 deductible while the other insurers' use $1,000, so compare quotes at the same deductible before drawing conclusions.

Claims

You can report a claim 24 hours a day, 365 days a year online, through your agent, or by phone at 801-267-5001 or 800-925-5177 (option 3). Have your policy number, the insured's name and address and the date of loss ready. A claims specialist reviews your coverage and contacts you within one business day, according to the company.

Bear River's Bear Care Home Repair program is a network of more than 20 vetted contractors across Utah. If you use one, Bear River pre-approves the appraisal, handles communication with the contractor, lets the contractor repair additional claim-related damage found during the work, and guarantees the work for three years. You are free to hire any contractor; the company says plainly that it will almost always suggest a Bear Care partner, so ask your adjuster how a different contractor's estimate would be handled before you sign anything.

Ratings and reputation

Bear River's website states an AM Best Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent). The most recent AM Best action found was in March 2020, when AM Best affirmed the A- rating and revised the outlook to stable from negative, citing a very strong balance sheet, adequate operating performance, a limited business profile because of its concentration in Utah, and a comprehensive reinsurance program. Bear River's site does not date the rating, so confirm the current one at ambest.com if your lender needs it.

Complaints are few. The Utah Insurance Department's 2025 comparison lists a complaint ratio of 0.003 valid complaints per $100,000 of earned premium on $78.7 million of earned premium, and a combined loss and expense ratio of 0.987. This is the state's own measure, not the NAIC complaint index. See Financial strength ratings: AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Demotech for what the rating letters mean.

Who it suits

Bear River suits Utah homeowners with good credit and a clean claims record who want a local mutual, an independent agent who can also quote other companies, and one carrier for home and auto. It suits less well anyone outside Utah, owners who want earthquake coverage from the same company, and homeowners with recent claims or a hard-to-place house, since the discounts and underwriting reward the opposite.

  • Strengths: policyholder-owned and Utah-based since 1909; 7th-largest homeowners writer in Utah; very low complaint ratio in the state's 2025 report; equipment breakdown and service line options; free LeakBot leak monitoring and a contractor program with a three-year workmanship guarantee.
  • Weaknesses: Utah only; no earthquake or flood coverage of its own; rated A- by AM Best (affirmed in March 2020), a notch below many larger rivals; sold only through agents, with no direct online purchase.
