Overview

Horace Mann is the insurer built around teachers. Horace Mann Educators Corporation, a publicly traded holding company in Springfield, Illinois (NYSE: HMN), sells auto, homeowners, renters, umbrella and life insurance, retirement annuities and supplemental and group benefits, and calls itself the largest multiline financial services company focused on America's educators. Its property and casualty policies are underwritten by Horace Mann Insurance Company and affiliates including Teachers Insurance Company and Horace Mann Property & Casualty Insurance Company.

The Horace Mann Group ranked #67 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $319.2 million (0.17% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. The only state where it ranked among the 10 largest homeowners groups in 2025 was Alaska (8th, with a 1.05% share). Across all property and casualty lines, its biggest states in 2025 were California (15.4% of direct premiums), Texas (9.2%), North Carolina (7.6%), Minnesota (6.2%) and Georgia (4.9%).

You do not have to be a teacher to buy a policy, but the company is built for them: educator risks have stayed at or above 80% of everything it insures, and educators get a discounted rate plus the Educator Advantage package. Sales run through exclusive agents who also advise on educators' retirement savings and state retirement systems, backed by a call center and online quoting.

History

Two Springfield, Illinois school teachers started the business in 1945 to sell automobile insurance to members of their teachers' association; the holding company was originally named for the Illinois Education Association. Life insurance followed in 1949, 403(b) retirement annuities in 1961 and homeowners insurance in 1965. The lead property insurer, Horace Mann Insurance Company, began business in December 1963 as the Swiss National Insurance Company, U.S.A., and took its present name in November 1967.

Ownership changed several times. INA Corporation of Philadelphia bought a 25% stake in 1968 and owned the whole company by January 1975; INA's 1982 merger with Connecticut General created CIGNA. In August 1989 an investor group led by Gibbons, Green, van Amerongen and members of management bought the company from CIGNA, and it went public on the New York Stock Exchange in November 1991. More recently Horace Mann bought NTA Life Enterprises (supplemental health) in 2019 and Madison National Life (group benefits for school districts) in 2022. Marita Zuraitis is president and chief executive officer.

Homeowners coverage

Horace Mann sells homeowners, condo and renters policies. The homeowners policy carries the usual parts under Horace Mann's own names: residence coverage for the house and attached structures, related private structures, unscheduled personal property (covered anywhere in the world, with sublimits for some kinds of property), additional living expenses and loss of rent, personal liability and medical payments. Its site notes that flood, sewer and drain backup, water below the ground surface and seepage may be excluded. Optional coverages include scheduled personal property (not subject to the policy deductible), replacement cost on contents, water backup and underground service line coverage (see service line coverage for water, sewer and power lines).

The Educator Advantage package comes with an educator's home policy at no extra cost. Its home benefits include:

  • No deductible on the first $2,500 ($1,000 in some states) of a theft from your car parked on or near school property or at a school event, or of a covered loss to personal property used for educational activities away from home.
  • Waiver of your lowest deductible when the home and a Horace Mann-insured car are damaged in the same occurrence.
  • Coverage for school fundraising money or goods stolen while in your possession, and reimbursement for rekeying locks if your keys are stolen.
  • Reimbursement of your monthly mortgage or rent payment if the home is uninhabitable after a covered loss.
  • Identity Fraud Advocacy Services, which educators receive with any home, condo or renters policy.

In California, Horace Mann has not joined the California Earthquake Authority and instead offers earthquake coverage directly to its property policyholders, managing the risk through its own underwriting, limits and earthquake deductibles. Coverage and benefits vary by state, and your policy controls.

Discounts and savings

Educators get a discounted rate. Horace Mann's discount page lists a multiline discount when you also have auto, life insurance or an annuity with the company; a year-of-construction discount for homes built in the last 10 years; a claim-free discount once a policy has been in force at least three years without claims; a one-time home buyer loyalty credit when you convert a Horace Mann renters policy to a homeowners policy; a protective device discount for fire and burglar alarms; and a new home buyer discount if you buy a home within your first year as a client. Customers can also get up to 64% off a SimpliSafe security system. Availability varies by state.

Where it sells and recent market moves

Horace Mann's property and casualty companies are licensed in 49 states and the District of Columbia. California is its largest market and its most visible pullback: a list on its site, updated July 1, 2025, restricts new home business in 59 ZIP codes in Butte, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties, including Paradise, Grass Valley, Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear. The company says it already insures a high concentration of homes there and will update the list as concentrations change. Even so, the California Department of Insurance's August 14, 2026 release named Horace Mann among 11 groups that had announced plans to stay and grow in wildfire-affected parts of the state under the Sustainable Insurance Strategy.

The broader story has been price. In 2025 Horace Mann's average property net written premium rose 12.7% because of rate actions and inflation adjustments to coverage amounts, while property risks in force slipped 1.8% to about 164,000; property retention was 88.4%. Lower catastrophe losses ($61.7 million in 2025, against $94.9 million in 2024, when Hurricane Helene alone cost $27.8 million) brought the property combined ratio down to 78.3% from 96.4%. For 2026 the company keeps a $35 million catastrophe retention with reinsurance above it.

Claims

Home and renters claims can be started online, which the company calls the fastest route, or by phone at 800-999-1030, staffed for claims 24 hours a day. The Horace Mann Mobile app shows coverages and billing. Your agent can also help open a claim.

Ratings and reputation

Horace Mann Insurance Company holds financial strength ratings of A (Excellent) from AM Best, last updated September 12, 2025; A from S&P Global, last updated January 22, 2026; A2 from Moody's, last updated March 31, 2026; and A from Fitch, last updated August 15, 2025, all with stable outlooks, according to the company's investor relations site. Its debt ratings are lower (S&P BBB, Moody's Baa2 for the holding company), which matters to bondholders rather than policyholders.

Results have recovered after the heavy-catastrophe years of 2023 and 2024. The property and casualty segment's combined ratio was 89.7% for 2025 and 89.6% in the second quarter of 2026.

Who it suits

Horace Mann suits K-12 teachers, administrators and school support staff who want a local agent, value perks tied to school life, and like having home, auto and retirement savings with one company. It is less compelling for buyers outside education, who lose the educator rate and Educator Advantage, and for California homeowners in its restricted wildfire ZIP codes, who cannot buy a new policy there.

  • Strengths: educator-specific benefits such as no-deductible coverage for classroom items and fundraising money; A-range financial strength ratings from all four major agencies; direct earthquake coverage in California; strong 2025 property results.
  • Weaknesses: new California home business restricted in 59 wildfire-exposed ZIP codes; double-digit average property premium increases in 2025; exclusive agents sell only Horace Mann products, so comparison shopping is on you; property risks in force are shrinking (down 1.8% in 2025).
