Study Warns Rising Insurance, Taxes Becoming Barrier to Homeownership

(WOWO) A new analysis from Zillow and Thumbtack finds that the "hidden" expenses of owning a home " everything outside the mortgage " have jumped to nearly $16,000 a year, rising faster than typical household incomes. The report says the average homeowner now spends $15,979 annually, or about $1,325 a month, on maintenance, insurance, and property taxes. Those costs rose 4.7% over the past year, higher than the 3.8% increase in household incomes according to WBNS 10-TV. Zillow calculated local property tax and insurance estimates, while Thumbtack analyzed maintenance expenses using real project data from customers and home service professionals. Routine costs such as HVAC upkeep, gutter cleaning, water heater servicing, lawn care, and roof maintenance make up the largest portion " about $10,946 a year.
