American Modern Insurance Group vs Foremost Insurance
Two big manufactured-home and hard-to-place specialists: American Modern (Munich Re, A+, agents only) and Foremost (Farmers, A, agents or phone).
Verdict
American Modern Insurance Group and Foremost Insurance are the two largest specialty writers for manufactured homes and for houses a standard carrier will not take: older, vacant, seasonal or rented-out dwellings. Both write open-perils manufactured home policies that pay an agreed amount on a total loss. American Modern says it writes admitted products in all 50 states, so policyholders keep state guaranty fund protection; Foremost is licensed in all 50 states and D.C. The differences are ownership, how you reach them and how the standard home products pay.
American Modern is owned by Munich Re (since 2008) and sold through agents only, including Allstate agents through Allstate's Ivantage Expanded Market Program. Its group ranked #27 among U.S. homeowners groups by 2025 premiums ($1.20 billion, 0.63%, per NAIC data). Foremost is part of the Farmers Insurance Group (since 2000), whose premiums the NAIC counts at the group level. It sells through more than 38,000 independent and Farmers agents, by phone, and through AARP and USAA programs. GEICO's agency and Progressive both list both companies, so you may meet either under another name.
On financial strength, AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) rating of American Modern's companies on July 23, 2026, a grade that rests heavily on Munich Re's capital. Foremost's site says AM Best rates it A (Excellent) but gives no affirmation date, so check AM Best for the company named on your policy. Neither has a J.D. Power score in our profiles. On availability, American Modern paused new homeowners business in at least 11 unnamed states beginning March 2025; Foremost reopened several California lines between September 2024 and March 2025.
Choose American Modern if
- You want a Homeowners FLEX policy on a house valued up to $1 million, with replacement cost on the dwelling and a choice of water coverage from 10% to 100% of the limit.
- Your manufactured home is in fair condition or better, valued up to $300,000, and you want agreed value on a total loss with no age limit.
- You need Dwelling Special or Dwelling Basic for a rental, seasonal or vacant home, or a standalone earthquake policy (14 states).
- You want the higher AM Best grade, A+ (Superior), and are comfortable buying through an agent.
Choose Foremost if
- You want to buy by phone or through a Farmers, independent, AARP or USAA channel rather than agents only.
- You want to compare settlement choices: Foremost Choice runs from actual cash value to replacement cost, with Coverage A Plus, extended replacement cost up to 50% and guaranteed rebuild, though not in every state.
- You own a mobile or manufactured home of any age, make or model, including park models, and want optional replacement cost that in most states can add up to 20% more than the insurance amount.
- You want a landlord policy for one- to four-family dwellings or a vacant-home policy with vandalism coverage, plus published discounts such as multi-dwelling or tenant screening.
