Amica Mutual Insurance vs State Farm

Both are A+ rated mutuals. Amica sells direct and led J.D. Power in 2025 and 2026; State Farm is the largest home insurer, sold through local exclusive agents.

Verdict

On paper these two look alike. Amica Mutual Insurance and State Farm are both mutuals owned by their policyholders, both rated A+ (Superior) by AM Best (Amica in March 2026, State Farm in November 2025), and both open to the general public. The difference is how you deal with them. Amica has no agents. You buy and service the policy by phone, online, in the app or by live chat. State Farm sells through more than 19,000 exclusive agents who represent only State Farm, plus online and by phone.

Scale and reputation separate them. State Farm ranked #1 among U.S. homeowners groups in 2025 ($35.27 billion in premiums, 18.67% of the market, NAIC data) and was the largest writer in 41 states. Amica ranked #22 ($1.32 billion, 0.70%), with its core in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts; AM Best credits large rate increases and a refocus on the Northeast for its return to profit after losses in 2022 and 2023. Amica ranked first among homeowners insurers in J.D. Power's 2025 (705) and 2026 (680) U.S. Home Insurance Studies and first in the 2026 claims study (773). State Farm was not among the top three homeowners insurers in the 2026 study, though it ranked first among renters insurers.

Check availability and ratings by address. State Farm General has taken no new California homeowners applications since May 2023 and is rated B (Fair) by AM Best; State Farm companies in Florida and Texas carry different ratings from the group. Amica says availability can vary by ZIP code. On coverage, Amica's Platinum Choice Home is an HO-5 with open-perils contents at replacement cost and 30% extended dwelling coverage, and Amica sells dividend-paying policies in many states. State Farm builds inflation coverage into the dwelling limit and lists Class 4 roof, wind mitigation and wildfire discounts. Neither profile states a roof payment schedule, so ask both.

Choose Amica if

  • You are comfortable with phone, app and chat and do not need an agent's office.
  • Claims satisfaction is a priority: first in J.D. Power's 2026 claims study.
  • You want an HO-5 package with 30% extended dwelling coverage, or a dividend-paying policy.
  • You live in New England, where it is a major writer.

Choose State Farm if

  • You want a local agent who handles home, auto and umbrella and meets you in person.
  • You live outside New England, where Amica may be pricier or more selective, or Amica doesn't quote your ZIP code.
  • You want roof, wind or wildfire mitigation credits, such as the Class 4 shingle discount offered in 26 states.
  • You want a claim handler you can message, with repairs through Select Service contractors (you may pick your own).

Before you decide

Quote the same Coverage A, deductibles and endorsements from each, then ask whether either writes new business at your address and which company would issue the policy. Compare how contents and roofs are settled, because those terms move the final claim check more than a small premium gap. Financial strength ratings: AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Demotech explains the A+ rating, What J.D. Power's home insurance studies measure shows what the satisfaction scores measure, and captive agents, independent agents and direct insurers covers the buying route.

Recent market moves AM Best credits significant rate increases and a refocus on core Northeastern states for Amica's 2024–2025 return to profitability; its outlook moved back to stable in March 2026. In September 2026 State Farm General filed to accept new California homeowners applications for homes with IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designations, its first step toward reopening since it closed to new business in May 2023.
