Overview

Amica Mutual Insurance Company is a Lincoln, Rhode Island mutual insurance company that sells auto, home, condo, renters, umbrella and life insurance directly to consumers. There are no agents: you buy and service an Amica policy by phone, online, through the app or by live chat, which makes Amica a direct writer in the same sense as USAA. Amica Mutual Group ranked #22 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $1.32 billion (0.70% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data.

Its home base still shows in the numbers. In 2025 Amica was the second-largest homeowners insurer in Rhode Island (12.20% of the state market), eighth in Connecticut and tenth in Massachusetts. Even so, its 2025 statutory statements say about 70% of its business is now written outside the Northeast, and homeowners coverage makes up roughly 43% of Amica Mutual's direct written premiums, with auto slightly more than half.

Amica is best known for service scores. It ranked first among homeowners insurers in J.D. Power's U.S. Home Insurance Study in both 2025 and 2026, and first in the 2026 U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study. Because it is a mutual, policyholders own the company, and in many states Amica sells dividend-paying home policies.

History

A.T. Vigneron founded the Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America in Providence in 1907, offering automobile, fire and theft insurance; Amica describes itself as the oldest mutual insurer of automobiles in the United States. In 1914 a companion company, the Factory Mutual Liability Insurance Company of America, was chartered to provide liability coverage to Automobile Mutual policyholders. Amica opened its first branch office, in Boston, in 1941.

Homeowners insurance arrived in 1956, followed later by marine and umbrella coverage. Amica Life Insurance Company was incorporated in 1969, and in 1973 Automobile Mutual and Factory Mutual merged into a single company. Corporate offices moved from Providence to Lincoln, Rhode Island in 1994. Today the group includes Amica Property and Casualty Insurance Company, which writes auto insurance in select states, Amica Life and Amica General Agency, LLC, formed in 1987 to place unusual risks. Edmund "Ted" Shallcross III became president and chief executive officer in 2022 and also serves as chairman.

The past few years were difficult. In February 2024 AM Best moved Amica's outlook to negative, citing large underwriting losses in auto and homeowners in 2022 and 2023 that cut into surplus. By March 2026 the outlook was back to stable after rate increases and a return to profitability; Amica Mutual reported 2025 statutory net income of $109.1 million and policyholder surplus of about $3.08 billion at year-end 2025.

Homeowners coverage

The standard Amica homeowners policy is an HO-3 with the six usual coverages, dwelling (Coverage A) through medical payments to others (Coverage F). Optional add-ons listed on Amica's site include water backup, scheduled personal property for jewelry, art and antiques, electronics coverage, replacement cost on personal property, identity theft coverage and home business coverage. Flood is excluded, but Amica sells National Flood Insurance Program policies, and an endorsement can add earthquake coverage.

Platinum Choice Home is Amica's HO-5 package (see how the HO-5 differs from an HO-3). It covers personal property on an open-perils basis instead of the HO-3's 16 named perils and pays replacement cost for belongings anywhere in the world. It also adds extended replacement cost of an extra 30% above the dwelling limit, limited water backup and sump overflow coverage, broader computer and valuables coverage, $5,000 of credit card coverage, higher business property limits ($2,500 at home, $1,500 away) and enhanced loss assessment coverage. Amica says each piece can also be added to a standard policy individually. Say your dwelling limit is $500,000 and a fire destroys the house when local rebuilding costs have jumped: the 30% extension makes up to $650,000 available for the dwelling. Condo (HO-6) and renters (HO-4) policies are also sold. Coverage details vary by state, and your own policy form controls.

Discounts and savings

Amica lists bundling (up to 30% when home, condo or renters coverage is combined with auto, umbrella and life), loyalty after two years, claim-free (no claims in three years), autopay, paperless, paid in full (not for escrow-paid policies), alarm systems including sprinklers and fire alarms, automatic temperature, water-leak or gas-leak detection devices, and a new or remodeled home credit. A smart home program gives a larger discount when a device is monitored by a third party rather than only by you, plus partner offers on leak-detection devices from Phyn, StreamLabs, Flume and Moen.

Then there are dividends. Amica sells dividend and non-dividend versions of its policies, and says dividend payments average 5% to 20% of the annual premium. Dividends are not guaranteed, are not offered in every state, and are forfeited if the policy ends before the term does. AM Best noted in 2026 that Amica has been gradually reducing dividends, so compare the net cost of both versions rather than assuming the dividend will repeat (see mutual insurers that pay policyholder dividends).

Where it sells and recent market moves

Amica Mutual is licensed in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and its site has homeowners pages for every state; its quote tool warns that some products are unavailable in some ZIP codes, so check your address.

The real change has been price and focus. AM Best's March 2026 release credits "significant rate increases," underwriting discipline, a strategic focus on core northeastern states and reinsurance changes that reduced catastrophe exposure for the turnaround. For homeowners outside New England, that means Amica may be pricier or more selective than its service reputation suggests; the rate increases show up at renewal.

Claims

Claims can be reported 24/7 online or in the app, by phone at 800-242-6422 (claims staff answer weekdays 8 a.m. to midnight and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern), or by live chat during those hours. Through its Home Repair Assistance Program, run by Contractor Connection, a policyholder can use a pre-qualified contractor whose repairs carry a five-year workmanship guarantee while you own the home and stay insured with Amica.

Amica's claims reputation is strong. It was first in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study with 773 points, against a study average of 702, and second in the 2025 study (745).

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed Amica Mutual's financial strength rating of A+ (Superior) and its "aa-" long-term issuer credit rating on March 13, 2026, and revised the outlook to stable from negative, the outlook it had assigned in February 2024. Amica says it has held A ratings from AM Best for more than 100 years.

In J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Home Insurance Study, Amica ranked first among homeowners insurers with 705 points, up 26 points from the prior year, and also first among renters insurers; the company says it was the first time it led both segments at once. It ranked first in homeowners again in the 2026 study, with 680 points.

Who it suits

Amica suits homeowners who value service and financial strength and are comfortable handling insurance without a local agent, particularly in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts, where it is a major writer. It suits less well shoppers who want an agent's advice at the kitchen table, or who put price first in states where Amica has been raising rates and tightening underwriting.

  • Strengths: first in J.D. Power's 2025 and 2026 home insurance studies and the 2026 claims study; A+ (Superior) from AM Best, outlook stable since March 2026; HO-5 Platinum Choice with 30% extended dwelling coverage; dividend policies in many states.
  • Weaknesses: no agents, so advice comes from phone representatives; dividends are not guaranteed and have been trimmed; AM Best cites significant rate increases and a refocus on the Northeast; a negative outlook from 2024 to 2026 followed underwriting losses in 2022 and 2023.
