Overview

Erie Insurance, which styles itself ERIE, is a policyholder-owned insurer from Erie, Pennsylvania, that sells only through independent agents in 12 states and the District of Columbia. Its NAIC group ranked #10 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $3.71 billion (1.96% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data.

For a regional company it has unusual weight where it operates. In 2025 Erie was the 2nd-largest home insurer in Pennsylvania ($952.3 million, 16.71% of the market) and West Virginia (19.50%), 3rd in Maryland, Ohio and Indiana, 4th in Wisconsin, and 5th in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Across auto, home, business and life lines it has more than 7 million policies in force and works with more than 14,000 independent agents.

Erie is also known for customer satisfaction. It has placed in the top three of J.D. Power's U.S. Home Insurance Study in both 2025 and 2026.

History

H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford founded Erie Insurance in Erie in 1925, and Hirt's "Above all in sERvIcE" motto still frames the company's service promise. The company celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2025.

Erie is built as a reciprocal exchange. The insurer that issues most policies, Erie Insurance Exchange, belongs to its policyholders, who are called subscribers. It is run by Erie Indemnity Company, a publicly traded company (NASDAQ: ERIE) that acts as attorney-in-fact and earns management fees for policy issuance, renewal and administrative services. Policyholders insured through the Exchange are its subscribers; they are not shareholders of Indemnity.

Erie has grown slowly and by geography. It entered Kentucky in 2014, its 12th and most recent state, under Tim NeCastro, who became CEO in 2016. Under him, according to the company, Erie grew to nearly $13 billion in premium. On February 20, 2026, Erie announced that NeCastro will retire as president and CEO on December 31, 2026, and that the board had begun a search for his successor.

Homeowners coverage

Erie's homeowners product is the ErieSecure Home policy. It also sells renters and mobile home policies and personal umbrella coverage.

The base policy's best-known feature is 100% guaranteed replacement cost on the dwelling, which pays to rebuild the house to its previous size and specifications even if that costs more than the dwelling limit. Erie's own footnotes set the conditions: on its main page, home improvements over $5,000 must be reported within 90 days, while its Pennsylvania page requires notice within 90 days of additions or remodeling over $50,000. Code-upgrade costs are subject to limits, depreciation is held back until the home is repaired or replaced, and the coverage is not available on all policies or in all states. See extended and guaranteed replacement cost coverage for how this differs from a capped extension.

The base policy also includes additional living expenses and an unusual gift card and gift certificate reimbursement, which pays up to $250 per card and $500 per policy period for cards bought within a year from a local business that has permanently closed (not in all states).

Optional ErieSecure Home bundles add coverage in three tiers:

  • Advantage: higher limits for theft and lost or misplaced valuables, plus Identity Recovery coverage.
  • Plus: everything in Advantage, plus higher limits for trailers and watercraft, Siding and Roof Restoration coverage, up to $10,000 of underground service line protection, and the option to add Sewer or Drain Backup.
  • Select: higher limits again, watercraft liability, Criminal Defense Cost Reimbursement, and Equipment Breakdown (capped at $50,000 per occurrence) when Sewer or Drain Backup is added; Equipment Breakdown is not available in North Carolina.

Erie also offers home-sharing coverage for homeowners who rent out space.

Discounts and savings

Erie's homeowners page highlights three discounts: a multi-policy discount of 15% to 25% depending on the state (the company calls about 20% typical) when you insure home and auto with ERIE; a protective device discount for smoke alarms, a burglar alarm system or an automatic sprinkler system; and an advanced quote discount for getting a quote 7 to 60 days before the policy starts. All are subject to eligibility rules and state rates.

Where it sells and recent market moves

Erie writes homeowners insurance in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. It does not write in Florida, the Gulf Coast states or the West, so its catastrophe exposure is mainly wind, hail and winter storms in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic, plus hurricanes along the North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland coasts.

The biggest recent disruption was operational. On June 7, 2025, Erie detected unauthorized activity on its network and shut down systems to contain it, leaving customers and agents without online accounts and normal service for weeks. The company reported on July 7, 2025, that full operations had resumed and that a forensic investigation found no evidence that sensitive personal information, financial records or legally protected data had been taken. The 2026 CEO transition is the next change to watch.

Claims

To report a claim, contact your ERIE agent or call the First Notice of Loss team at 800-367-3743, which also handles off-hours claims support. Customer Care is at 800-458-0811. The ERIE website and mobile app also link to claim reporting and payments. Erie's own guidance, repeated during its 2025 systems outage, is to start with your local agent or the First Notice of Loss line; the agent who sold the policy can also explain your deductible and coverage before an adjuster visits.

Ratings and reputation

Erie's property-casualty companies are rated A (Excellent) by AM Best, according to the company's April 2026 first-quarter earnings release and its fact sheet. That is one notch below the A+ (Superior) that some regional peers carry, though still in AM Best's "Excellent" range.

Erie scores well with customers. It ranked 3rd among homeowners insurers in J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Home Insurance Study with 676 points, and 2nd among renters insurers with 706. In the 2026 study it moved up to 2nd among homeowners insurers (678) and was again 2nd among renters insurers (692). In J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study, Erie was named among the companies scoring above the study average.

Who it suits

Erie suits homeowners in its 12 states and DC who want a local independent agent, guaranteed replacement cost on the house, and a company with consistently strong satisfaction scores. It does not help you if you live elsewhere, and its AM Best rating is A rather than A+.

  • Strengths: 100% guaranteed replacement cost in the base policy where available; top-three finishes in J.D. Power's 2025 and 2026 U.S. Home Insurance Studies; ErieSecure Home bundles that add service line, roof and siding restoration and equipment breakdown coverage.
  • Weaknesses: Sells in only 12 states and DC; AM Best rating of A (Excellent) rather than A+ or A++; June 2025 cyber incident disrupted service for weeks, and the CEO retires at the end of 2026.
