Overview
Westfield is a mutual insurance group based in Westfield Center, Ohio, in Medina County. Its ultimate parent, Ohio Farmers Insurance Company, owns a family of carriers that includes Westfield Insurance Company, Westfield National Insurance Company, American Select Insurance Company and Old Guard Insurance Company. The Westfield Group ranked #57 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $413.6 million (0.22% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Across all lines Westfield reports more than $4.4 billion in direct written premium, so homeowners is a modest slice of a group dominated by commercial, farm, surety and specialty business.
Westfield sells only through independent agents; there is no direct-to-consumer quote. Its homeowners footprint is smaller than many people assume: the company now lists personal lines in nine states (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia), against 21 states for commercial insurance and 20 for farm coverage. Its largest relative presence is in West Virginia, where it was the seventh-largest homeowners group in 2025 with 3.42% of the market. Westfield is best known in personal lines for WesPak, a combined home-and-auto policy it introduced in 1984.
History
Westfield traces itself to a meeting of farmers in a general store in 1847. On February 8, 1848, the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Medina County was chartered to insure farm property against fire; it took the name Ohio Farmers Insurance Company in 1862 and expanded into Indiana, its first state outside Ohio, in 1877. Ohio Farmers Indemnity Company was formed in 1929, and the group adopted the Westfield Companies brand in 1971, after its home village. AM Best has rated the company in the "A" range since 1934, according to Westfield.
WesPak, launched in 1984, combined home and auto coverage in one policy. The group chartered Westfield Bank in 2001, launched Westfield Specialty in 2021 and bought Lloyd's of London Syndicate 1200 in 2023, its 175th anniversary year, which took it into international specialty insurance. It has also pulled back where personal lines did not fit: in 2009 it transferred its Delaware personal lines book, about $7 million in annual premium, to NGM Insurance Company of The Main Street America Group.
In June 2025 Ohio Farmers agreed to sell Westfield Bancorp to First Financial Bancorp, and the deal closed effective November 1, 2025 for $260 million in cash plus about 2.75 million First Financial shares. CEO Ed Largent called the sale part of a strategic focus on property and casualty insurance. Largent, who has worked at Westfield for more than 38 years, became president in 2011, chief executive in 2015 and chair of the Ohio Farmers board in 2016. The company says it has about 2,800 employees.
Homeowners coverage
Every Westfield homeowners policy includes dwelling, personal property, personal liability and loss of use coverage, plus increased replacement cost, which pays above the dwelling limit if rebuilding costs have climbed (see extended and guaranteed replacement cost coverage). Optional add-ons include equipment breakdown coverage coverage, service line coverage for buried utility lines, identity theft, home cyber protection and a personal umbrella. Condo, renters and rental property policies are also sold.
Westfield's inland flood endorsement is worth a look in its Midwestern states. It covers flash flooding from overflowing streams and rivers, unusual rainfall or snowmelt runoff, and mudflow, for the dwelling, other structures, belongings including items in a basement, debris removal and additional living expenses, with sublimits. It is not available in high-risk flood zones, where Westfield points buyers to the National Flood Insurance Program, and it does not cover sewer backup unless the backup results directly from a flood.
WesPak is the main product most agents will quote. It puts home and auto on one package policy with one bill and a common loss deductible, so a single storm that damages your house and the car in the driveway costs one deductible rather than two. The home side carries expanded replacement cost and higher contents limits. WesPak Estate, aimed at high-value homes, adds guaranteed replacement cost, water backup, equipment breakdown, cyber and identity theft coverage, personal injury liability and a disappearing deductible, with optional coverage for jewelry and furs, wine and spirits, art, classic cars and boats. Westfield does not publish dollar limits; the agent's quote and the policy form control.
Discounts and savings
Westfield lists discounts for WesPak and WesPak Estate packaging, multi-policy, loyalty, advance quoting (shopping before your current policy expires) and protective devices such as central burglar and fire alarms, whole-house generators and sprinkler systems. WesPak Estate adds credits for low-temperature monitoring and water leak shutoff systems. Its MissionSafe telematics program applies to the auto side of a WesPak policy.
Homeowners and eligible farm policyholders with an owner-occupied dwelling can also get Ting, a plug-in sensor from Ting Labs that watches the home's wiring for arcing and other electrical fire warning signs, free for three years in all nine homeowners states. If Ting finds a hazard, Westfield will put up to $1,000 toward an electrician's labor. Ting carries no premium discount.
Where it sells and recent market moves
Homeowners coverage is available in the nine states listed above, through appointed independent agencies found with Westfield's agent locator. Commercial lines reach further, into states such as Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, but personal lines do not follow.
The bigger recent story is price. In February 2024 AM Best moved the outlook on Westfield's issuer credit ratings to negative after several years of elevated underwriting losses, including severe convective storm and catastrophe losses; Westfield Insurance Company reported a $34 million net loss in 2022. By March 2025 AM Best said pricing actions, revised policy terms and a shift toward more profitable lines had brought the group's combined ratio back under 100% for 2024, with net income of $143 million and surplus growing again. For homeowners, revised policy terms can mean higher deductibles, tighter roof and wind and hail terms or narrower endorsements at renewal, so compare your renewal declarations with last year's.
Claims
Report a home claim online through the File a Claim page on westfieldinsurance.com, through a MyWestfield account, through your agent, or by calling 800-243-0210 and selecting option 3. The customer care center answers Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. WesPak policyholders get a dedicated claims line, and Westfield advertises an 89% claims satisfaction rate, a company figure. Because the package uses a common loss deductible, one event that damages both home and car is handled as a single claim deductible.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings of "a+" (Excellent) for Westfield Insurance Company and its affiliates on March 4, 2025, and revised the issuer credit rating outlook to stable from negative. AM Best assessed Westfield's balance sheet strength as strongest, its operating performance as adequate and its business profile as neutral. Westfield's own materials still cited the same ratings in August 2026.
Westfield is not ranked in J.D. Power's U.S. Home Insurance Study or U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study.
Who it suits
Westfield suits homeowners in Ohio and its eight other personal lines states who want an independent agent, a long-established mutual and a true home-and-auto package with one deductible. WesPak Estate gives owners of larger homes guaranteed replacement cost and water backup without moving to a specialist high-net-worth insurer. It suits less well anyone outside those nine states, buyers who want to quote online, or households that put service rankings first, since Westfield does not appear in J.D. Power's studies.
- Strengths: A (Excellent) from AM Best, outlook stable since March 2025; mutual ownership dating to 1848; WesPak package with a common loss deductible; inland flood endorsement and free Ting electrical monitoring.
- Weaknesses: homeowners sold in only nine states; agent-only, with no online quote; no J.D. Power ranking; 2022 to 2024 losses led to price increases and tighter policy terms.
