Overview
Grange Insurance is a Columbus, Ohio property and casualty insurer that sells auto, home and business insurance exclusively through independent agents. Its operating carrier is Grange Insurance Company, owned by Grange Mutual Holding Company, and it shares an enterprise with its Wisconsin-based affiliate, Integrity Insurance. Together the companies serve policyholders in 13 states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin. Grange says it has more than 675,000 customers and wrote a record $1.61 billion in direct premium across all lines in 2025.
The NAIC still files the group as Grange Mutual Casualty Group, its historic name. It ranked #50 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $474.2 million (0.25% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Half of that is in Ohio, where Grange was the sixth-largest homeowners insurer in 2025 with $237.5 million and 4.66% of the market, behind State Farm, Allstate, Erie Insurance, Liberty Mutual and American Family and just ahead of Nationwide.
Grange is a classic Midwestern regional: mid-sized, agent-centric and conservatively capitalized, with an AM Best rating of A (Excellent) that it says it has held for more than 50 years.
History
The company traces its origin to 1930, when John Haaf, a Summit County, Ohio farmer and member of the Ohio State Grange (the Patrons of Husbandry), objected to an increase in his auto premium and proposed low-cost auto insurance for fellow Grange members. A program for Ohio State Grange members began in February 1933, and on March 25, 1935, Grange Mutual Casualty Company was formed in Columbus as a mutual insurance company and took over the business. It added fire insurance in 1955, becoming a multi-line company, and in 1958 its board voted to sell beyond Grange members and beyond Ohio. Georgia followed in 1960, then Kentucky and Tennessee.
Grange Life Insurance Company was launched in 1968 and later sold to Kansas City Life, returning Grange's focus to property and casualty. The affiliation with Integrity Mutual Insurance Company of Wisconsin began in 2001. Grange first topped $1 billion in annual premium in 2003, and its surplus reached $1 billion by 2013. In 2019 it established a mutual holding company; the operating insurer is now Grange Insurance Company. John Ammendola, chief executive since late 2014, will retire on March 1, 2027, and chief property and casualty officer Ryan Michel, a former president and CEO of Allstate Canada, will succeed him.
Homeowners coverage
Grange sells homeowners, condo and renters policies through agents, with dwelling, personal property (covered at home or away) and personal liability as the core. Its list of optional coverages is longer than many regionals publish: underground service line, equipment breakdown for heating and cooling systems, identity theft, personal cyber, back up of sewers and drains (including sump pump failure), home replacement cost after a covered total loss, valuables and jewelry, concealed water damage, matching materials, personal umbrella, and assisted living care for a relative's belongings in a facility.
Two of those deserve attention in hail country. Matching materials pays to replace roofing or siding with matching materials, or with the closest available in quality and type, so a hail claim on one slope is less likely to leave you with a patchwork roof (see how matching coverage works). Concealed water damage restores a home after hidden leaks, which a basic policy may exclude as long-term seepage. Sewer and drain backup is optional, as it is with most insurers, and it matters in Midwest basements.
Grange says its home deductibles apply per claim, so two separate claims in one year mean two deductibles. Ask your agent whether your quote carries a separate wind and hail deductible and how the roof is settled, because both vary by state and by the age of the roof. Flood and earthquake are not part of the standard policy.
Discounts and savings
Grange lists these home discounts: multi-policy (home with auto), advance quote (quoted before the effective date), home buyer, paid in full and prompt payer, smart fire alarm and smart home alarm (both for central station monitored systems), a DIY home inspection discount for completing an inspection through Grange's smartphone app, and a home maintenance discount for providing proof of permits and inspections. Availability varies by state, and an independent agent can compare the net price against other carriers in the same appointment.
Where it sells and recent market moves
Grange writes homeowners insurance in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia, and Integrity writes it in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Michigan and South Carolina are in the group's footprint for other lines but are not listed for home insurance.
The past three years explain today's prices. In 2023, Grange said weather losses ran more than twice its plan, adding about 12 points to its combined ratio, and its overall property-casualty combined ratio stayed near 114% amid inflation and a tight reinsurance market. It described "many difficult but necessary decisions" in response, and its 2024 annual report credited "repositioning our homeowners product" for returning personal lines to profitability in both auto and home in 2024, with an overall combined ratio of 98.4%. For policyholders that meant rate increases and tighter underwriting in 2023 and 2024; the company says it built a Renewal Insights tool so agents can show what drove a renewal premium change, and new auto, home and umbrella products are being built for 2025 and 2026.
Claims
Homeowners can report a claim 24 hours a day to the Loss Reporting Center at 800-445-3030 or online through a My Grange account, and track it at 800-686-0025. A dedicated claim representative calls to explain the coverage, review the damage and schedule an inspection; for many property claims, Grange says the representative provides an itemized estimate and can issue payment at the inspection, with electronic payment by direct deposit available. Before the adjuster arrives, make temporary repairs to prevent further damage, keep receipts and damaged items, and shut off the water supply after a leak.
After the fall 2024 hurricanes, Grange extended payment grace periods for Georgia customers in counties covered by state emergency directives, an example of how state rules can pause cancellations after a disaster.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best reaffirmed the financial strength rating of A (Excellent) and the issuer credit rating of "a+" for Grange Insurance and Integrity Insurance, with a stable outlook, according to Grange's September 23, 2026 announcement. AM Best also again assessed Grange's innovation as "Prominent." Grange reports total assets of $3.4 billion. The company cites an average review rating of 4 out of 5 stars on third-party sites in 2025, up from 3.9 in 2024.
Who it suits
Grange suits homeowners in its 11 home states, especially Ohio, who want an independent agent to shop several carriers and who value optional coverages such as matching materials, service line and equipment breakdown. It suits less well people who want to buy online or by phone directly from the insurer, homeowners outside its footprint, and anyone looking for a carrier that has not tightened homeowners pricing or underwriting since 2023.
- Strengths: A (Excellent) from AM Best, reaffirmed in September 2026, with an "a+" issuer rating; a broad menu of endorsements, including matching materials and concealed water damage; sold through independent agents who can compare alternatives; sixth-largest home insurer in Ohio.
- Weaknesses: home insurance in only 11 states; no direct online purchase; homeowners rates and underwriting tightened after 2023 weather losses; per-claim deductibles and a CEO transition scheduled for March 2027.
