Overview

Cincinnati Insurance, formally The Cincinnati Insurance Companies, is the property-casualty arm of Cincinnati Financial Corporation, a Fairfield, Ohio holding company traded on Nasdaq as CINF. Commercial lines are its largest business, but it has built a large personal lines book alongside them: its NAIC group ranked #15 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $1.91 billion (1.01% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. At home it ranks 8th in Ohio ($214.9 million, 4.21% of the market), and it is also 10th in Alabama.

The company sells only through independent agents, and selectively: a "select group" of agencies, about 2,674 personal lines agency locations at the end of 2025. Those agencies produced about 1.3 million personal lines policies for roughly 550,000 policyholders.

What sets Cincinnati apart among regional carriers is its tilt toward wealthier clients. Its high-net-worth line, Cincinnati Private Client, accounted for about 60% of personal lines premium in 2025. The company also prefers whole accounts: about 86% of its homeowner policies were paired with a Cincinnati auto policy at the end of 2025.

History

Four independent agents, John J. "Jack" Schiff, Robert Schiff, Chester Field and Harry Turner, formed The Cincinnati Insurance Company in 1950, and it issued its first policy on January 25, 1951. The founders wanted a company sponsored by agents, and that independent-agent-only model has not changed. Cincinnati expanded into Kentucky and Indiana in 1955 and, after Ohio passed its multiple-line law that year, began selling a homeowners package policy.

Cincinnati Financial Corporation was formed in 1968 as the holding company. Today The Cincinnati Insurance Company owns The Cincinnati Casualty Company and The Cincinnati Indemnity Company, which together with it form the standard market group that writes home and auto, along with The Cincinnati Specialty Underwriters Insurance Company (surplus lines) and The Cincinnati Life Insurance Company. The group also runs the Cincinnati Re reinsurance operation and a Lloyd's syndicate, Cincinnati Global. Stephen M. Spray is president and chief executive.

Over the past decade Cincinnati has deliberately spread its personal lines business: its 10 largest states produced 78.5% of personal lines premium in 2015 but 59.2% in 2025.

Homeowners coverage

A Cincinnati homeowner policy covers the dwelling, other structures, personal property, additional living expenses and personal liability. The company also writes condo, renters and rental dwelling (one- to four-family) policies. Optional coverages on its site include personal cyber protection (cyberattack, cyber extortion and online fraud) and identity theft coverage with a restoration advocate.

Cincinnati Private Client adds coverage built for affluent households: personal articles coverage that insures jewelry, furs, fine art, collectibles and firearms at appraised values (including while traveling abroad), personal excess liability limits up to $100 million, collector car coverage, and watercraft coverage for boats of all sizes, including yachts over 80 feet. In catastrophe-prone states and areas, Cincinnati writes some high-value homes on non-admitted (surplus lines) forms and rates; those homeowner policies brought in $129 million of premium in 2025. If your agent places you this way, the policy wording, rate regulation and guaranty fund protection differ from an admitted policy.

The company has also been tightening terms. Its 2025 annual report describes "greater use of higher minimum loss deductibles" and stronger property inspections to verify home condition and insurance to value, so expect a closer look at your dwelling limit and deductible at renewal.

Discounts and savings

Cincinnati's site does not list standard homeowners discounts; pricing questions go through the agent. Its site highlights preferred pricing on water shut-off devices from partner vendors and related discounts, and the company prefers to write home and auto together in one account. In Florida, Cincinnati offers the state's windstorm mitigation credits for roof covering, roof-deck attachment, roof-to-wall connections, opening protection and roof shape, documented on the OIR-B1-1802 inspection form.

Where it sells and recent market moves

Cincinnati marketed personal lines through agencies in 45 states at the end of 2025. Its 10 largest personal lines states were Ohio, New York, Illinois, Georgia, California, Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, Indiana and Connecticut.

The January 7-28, 2025 Los Angeles-area wildfires were the largest catastrophe event in the company's history: $942 million of losses before reinsurance across all its units as of December 31, 2025, with $325 million of net personal lines catastrophe losses and $61 million of homeowners reinsurance reinstatement premium. The personal lines segment posted a 103.6% combined ratio and a $111 million pretax loss for 2025. Cincinnati estimates its homeowners rate increases averaged in the low double digits in 2025, varying widely by state, and its new personal lines business fell 21% as it held to its pricing. Ratings and reputation

As of February 20, 2026, Cincinnati's standard market property-casualty companies were rated A+ (Superior) by AM Best (affirmed February 13, 2025), AA- (Very Strong) by Fitch (upgraded from A+ on September 3, 2025), A1 (Good) by Moody's (affirmed October 2, 2025) and A+ (Strong) by S&P (affirmed June 4, 2024), all with stable outlooks. The surplus lines subsidiary is also rated A+ by AM Best. Cincinnati notes that only about 12% of property-casualty groups earn AM Best's A+ or A++; see Financial strength ratings: AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Demotech for what the grades mean.

The company's personal lines underwriting results have swung with catastrophes: combined ratios of 100.4% in 2023, 97.5% in 2024 and 103.6% in 2025.

Who it suits

Cincinnati suits households that want one independent agent and one carrier for a home, several cars, valuables and an umbrella, particularly affluent families who would otherwise shop Chubb or PURE. It is less suited to buyers who want to quote online or by phone, since there is no direct channel, and owners of high-value homes in wildfire or coastal zones may be offered a surplus lines policy rather than a standard one.

  • Strengths: A+ (Superior) AM Best and AA- Fitch ratings; private client coverage including excess liability up to $100 million; agent-only service with local claims representatives; more than 75 years in business.
  • Weaknesses: No online or direct sales; personal lines lost money in 2025 after the Los Angeles fires; low-double-digit homeowners rate increases in 2025; some high-value homes placed on surplus lines forms.
