Auto-Owners Insurance vs Erie Insurance
Two independent-agent insurers with guaranteed replacement cost: Auto-Owners rates A+ in 26 states, Erie rates A with top J.D. Power scores in 12 states and DC.
Verdict
These two have more in common than most pairs. Auto-Owners Insurance and Erie Insurance sell only through independent agents, both rest on a policyholder-owned parent (Auto-Owners Insurance Company is a mutual, though its policies may be issued by stock affiliates), and both offer guaranteed replacement cost on the dwelling. Erie is built into its base policy; Auto-Owners offers Guaranteed Home Replacement Cost as an optional endorsement and says to read the endorsement for its conditions. Auto-Owners also sells an Increased Cost endorsement that adds 25% above the dwelling limit. They ranked #9 and #10 among U.S. homeowners groups in 2025 ($4.14 billion and $3.71 billion in direct premiums, per NAIC data).
Where they differ is footprint, ratings and service record. Auto-Owners writes in 26 states, concentrated in the Midwest and Southeast, with affiliates Concord Group (Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont) and Capital Insurance Group (Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington) covering other regions. Erie writes in 12 states and the District of Columbia. The two overlap in places such as Wisconsin (Auto-Owners 3rd, Erie 4th in 2025) and North Carolina (Erie 5th, Auto-Owners 6th). AM Best rated Auto-Owners A+ (Superior) in March 2026; Erie holds A (Excellent) as of April 2026. Erie finished 2nd in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Home Insurance Study (678) and 3rd in 2025, while Auto-Owners was not among the top three in either year.
Operationally, Auto-Owners' 2025 report showed premiums up 8% and policies in force down 1.7% to about 6.2 million, as it kept its book profitable. Erie dealt with a June 2025 cybersecurity incident that took its systems down for weeks, and CEO Tim NeCastro retires on December 31, 2026. Neither profile describes how each settles roofs, which matters most in hail states.
Choose Auto-Owners if
- You live in one of its 26 states, or in New England or the West where its affiliates write.
- You want the higher AM Best rating, A+ (Superior), and a large surplus (over $18 billion at the end of 2025).
- You like a long discount list: water shut-off, automatic backup generator, mortgage-free, hurricane and wind mitigation in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.
- You want to add the 25% Increased Cost endorsement or Homeowners Plus.
Choose Erie Insurance if
- You live in Erie's 12 states or DC and want guaranteed replacement cost included in the base policy.
- Customer satisfaction scores matter: Erie was top three in J.D. Power's home study in 2025 and 2026.
- You want a tiered package (Advantage, Plus, Select) that adds service line, equipment breakdown and Siding and Roof Restoration.
- You want a gift card reimbursement for cards from a local business that has permanently closed (not in all states).

Before you decide
Because both use independent agents, one agency may be able to quote both where they overlap. Ask for the same Coverage A, deductibles and endorsements, and check how each treats the dwelling limit if rebuild costs rise; extended and guaranteed replacement cost coverage explains the conditions you should look for. Read the roof settlement wording, since neither homeowners page spells it out. Financial strength ratings: AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Demotech and What J.D. Power's home insurance studies measure explain how to weigh an A+ rating against a satisfaction ranking.
