Amica Mutual Insurance vs USAA

Both sell direct with no agents. Amica is open to anyone and led J.D. Power in 2025-2026; USAA is military-only, with contents at replacement cost as standard.

Verdict

Start with eligibility. USAA insures only military members, veterans with an honorable or general-under-honorable-conditions discharge, and eligible family. Amica Mutual Insurance is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and sells to anyone, although it warns that availability can vary by ZIP code. If you qualify for both, the choice is real, because the two work alike: no local agents, and quotes, changes and claims by phone, app and website.

They are also built differently. Amica is a Rhode Island mutual that ranked #22 among U.S. homeowners groups in 2025 ($1.32 billion in premiums, NAIC data); AM Best credits large rate increases and a refocus on its core Northeastern states for its return to profit after underwriting losses in 2022 and 2023. USAA is a San Antonio reciprocal exchange that ranked #3 ($13.26 billion) and was in the top 10 in every state. Amica ranked first among homeowners insurers in J.D. Power's 2025 (705) and 2026 (680) U.S. Home Insurance Studies and first in the 2026 claims study. USAA reports an average of 9 days to pay a catastrophe claim in 2025. Financial strength is cited by different agencies: AM Best rated Amica A+ (Superior) in March 2026, and S&P rated USAA AA (Very Strong) in May 2025, down from AA+.

On the policy, USAA pays contents at replacement cost as standard and waives the deductible on covered losses to military uniforms and gear for active-duty and Reserve members. Its Home Protector endorsement adds 25% to the dwelling limit. Amica lists replacement cost on personal property as an add-on, but its Platinum Choice Home (an HO-5) includes it, along with 30% extended dwelling coverage. Amica also sells dividend-paying policies in many states, though dividends are not guaranteed and AM Best noted Amica has been trimming them. Near the coast in eight states, USAA may exclude windstorm and refer you to a separate policy.

Choose Amica if

  • You have no military connection, or want a quote from a direct insurer that sells to anyone.
  • Service scores matter: first in J.D. Power's home study in 2025 and 2026, and in the 2026 claims study (773).
  • You want an HO-5 package with open-perils contents and 30% extended dwelling coverage.
  • You live in New England, where it is a major writer, or you want the possibility of a dividend.

Choose USAA if

  • You qualify and want contents at replacement cost without buying an endorsement.
  • You want no deductible on covered losses to military gear, and a waiver when property is lost to war.
  • You want a larger insurer with a top-10 presence in every state, including a planned California expansion in January 2027.
  • You live inland, or you are prepared to buy a separate wind policy near the Gulf or Atlantic coast.
