Kin Insurance vs SageSure

Kin sells direct online through its own reciprocals in 14 states; SageSure is an agent-only underwriter whose carrier, rating and claims handler vary by state.

Verdict

Both specialize in homes in hurricane, hail and wildfire country, and both sit behind policyholder-owned reciprocal exchanges for part of their business. After that they are built opposite ways. Kin is a Chicago insurtech that sells directly, online and by phone, with no outside agents, and manages two main exchanges, Kin Interinsurance Network (Florida) and Kin Interinsurance Nexus Exchange (most other states). SageSure is a Jersey City managing general underwriter that sells only through enrolled independent agents and places business with changing carrier partners (IAT's Occidental, Wilshire, Harco and TransGuard, and reciprocals such as SURE, Elevate and Auros). On 2025 NAIC premiums, IAT Reinsurance Company Group, SageSure's main carrier group, ranked #20 ($1.49 billion); the Kin group ranked #51 ($473.6 million).

The practical question is who stands behind the policy. With Kin, one company handles the quote, the policy and the claim; both exchanges are Demotech A (Exceptional), with no AM Best rating. With SageSure the name on the declarations page decides everything: IAT's carriers are rated A- (Excellent) by AM Best (outlook revised to positive, February 2025), while SURE, Auros and Interboro carry Demotech A. The carrier can also change at renewal, so read it every year.

On the policy itself, Kin writes an HO-3 style form in Florida and Louisiana, but elsewhere its House & Property policy is a DP-3-like base form that needs an owner-occupied endorsement to behave like a homeowners policy. Check your declarations page. SageSure sells HO-3, HO-5, HO-6, DP-3 and manufactured home forms, says it insures homes to 100% of replacement cost, and markets replacement cost roof coverage where actual cash value roofs are common. Kin's profile gives no roof terms, so ask.

Choose Kin if

  • You want to quote and manage everything online or by phone without an agent, with a 24/7 claims line.
  • You live in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma or Tennessee, which are on Kin's list but not among the states SageSure's profile names.
  • You are in Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach counties, where Kin cut rates by more than 20% on average in September 2026, or you can use its FORTIFIED, smart-home and bundling credits.
  • You accept surplus lines coverage in Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia or California, where Kin's coverage is surplus lines and the state guaranty fund generally does not stand behind it.

Choose SageSure if

  • You want an independent agent who can shop more than one carrier, and you value AM Best-rated options in states such as Louisiana, Texas, New Jersey and New York.
  • You need an HO-5, wind-only or manufactured home form, or a home national carriers declined.
  • Replacement cost roof coverage matters more to you than a lower premium.
  • You live in Alaska, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York or North Carolina, which are on SageSure's list but not Kin's.

Before you decide

Get quotes for the same Coverage A, deductibles and endorsements from both, and ask each whether it is writing new business at your address. Read the named-storm deductible, roof terms and whether the policy is admitted or surplus lines. admitted vs surplus lines home insurers: what you give up explains the guaranty-fund difference, reciprocal exchanges: how they work covers subscriber contributions, captive agents, independent agents and direct insurers helps weigh a direct purchase against an agent, and how to compare homeowners insurance quotes shows how to line the quotes up.
