Progressive Home vs State Farm
A Progressive home quote may come from one of a dozen partner carriers; State Farm writes its own policies through exclusive agents and is closed in California.
Verdict
The biggest difference is who actually issues the policy. When you buy a State Farm homeowners policy, a State Farm company issues it (State Farm Fire and Casualty in most states, State Farm General in California, State Farm Florida in Florida, State Farm Lloyds in Texas). When you ask Progressive Home for a quote, you may be matched to Progressive Home itself, the former American Strategic Insurance of St. Petersburg, or to a partner carrier. Progressive's carrier list for homeowners includes American Integrity, American Modern, Bamboo, Hippo, Homesite, Nationwide, Openly, Plymouth Rock, RLI, Stillwater, Tower Hill and TRUE. Each is solely responsible for the claims on its policies, and coverage, roof settlement terms and claims service differ by carrier.
Scale and sales model follow from that. State Farm ranked #1 among U.S. homeowners groups by 2025 premiums ($35.27 billion, 18.67% of the market, per NAIC data); Progressive Group ranked #12 ($3.34 billion, 1.77%). State Farm sells only through more than 19,000 exclusive agents, online and by phone. Progressive sells through independent agents and its direct channel, Progressive Advantage Agency, which is built around bundling a home with auto: Progressive's property business had about 3.64 million policies in force against about 27.6 million personal auto policies on March 31, 2026. If Progressive Home underwrites the house and you insure the cars with Progressive, one event that damages both costs one deductible, not two.
Appetite has moved in opposite directions. Progressive Home nonrenewed about 56,000 Florida policies in 2022 and said it would not renew about 100,000 more from May 2024, stopped writing Florida DP-3 rental dwellings, and in September 2024 restricted new homeowners business for certain agents in Texas. State Farm has taken no new California homeowners applications since May 27, 2023, and filed on September 16, 2026 to reopen for IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designations. AM Best rated Progressive's insurers A+ (Superior) on May 1, 2026. State Farm's main companies are A+ (Superior), cut from A++ in November 2025, though State Farm General is B (Fair).
Choose Progressive Home if
- You already insure your cars with Progressive and want one app, one company and a single deductible when a storm hits both.
- You want several carriers' home quotes through one comparison, or you shop through an independent agent.
- You are comfortable checking the declarations page for the insurer's actual name and reading that carrier's forms.
- You value its above-average finish in J.D. Power's 2026 Property Claims Satisfaction Study.
Choose State Farm if
- You want a single company issuing your policy, with a local agent who sells nothing else.
- You want to ask one insurer, not a marketplace, about wind, hail or wildfire credits: State Farm lists Class 4 roofing (26 states), wind mitigation, and wildfire mitigation in California, Colorado and Oregon.
- You want inflation coverage built into the dwelling limit, or sewer or drain backup, earthquake and a personal articles policy.
- You are outside California, where State Farm is not taking new homeowners applications.

Before you decide
Compare the actual insurer on each quote, not the brand. For Progressive, find the carrier name on the declarations page and read that carrier's roof and claims terms. Get the same Coverage A, deductibles and endorsements from both, and confirm that either is writing new business at your address. MGAs and fronting carriers: who really insures your home explains how matched-carrier arrangements work, bundling home and auto insurance: when it pays covers when a bundle pays, how to compare homeowners insurance quotes covers quote matching, and captive agents, independent agents and direct insurers explains the two sales models.
