Overview

Progressive Home is the homeowners insurance arm of The Progressive Corporation, the Ohio auto insurer. The carrier behind the name is the former American Strategic Insurance (ASI) of St. Petersburg, Florida, which Progressive bought in stages between 2015 and 2020. Progressive Group ranked #12 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $3.34 billion (1.77% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. In Texas it was the 10th-largest homeowners group in 2025, with $471.8 million; it was also in the top 10 in Louisiana (8th), Arizona (8th), Tennessee and Kentucky (9th) and several other states.

Two things set Progressive apart. First, home insurance is an add-on to a very large auto business: Progressive's property strategy emphasizes homeowners policies bundled with auto, and its property business (homeowners, condo and renters) had about 3.64 million policies in force on March 31, 2026, against about 27.6 million personal auto policies. Second, a "Progressive" home quote may not be a Progressive Home policy at all. Progressive Advantage Agency, the company's in-house agency, also places homeowners business with unaffiliated carriers, and each insurer is "solely responsible for the claims on its policies," in Progressive's words. Check the insurer name on your declarations page.

History

John Auer founded American Strategic Insurance in 1997 to write voluntary-market homeowners coverage in Florida and the Southeast, under the holding company ARX Holding Corp. Progressive took a 5% stake in 2012, agreed in December 2014 to buy 67% of ARX for $875 million, and closed in April 2015. It raised its stake above 80% in April 2018 and bought the remaining shares in April 2020, a year ahead of schedule, making ARX a wholly owned subsidiary. Progressive's own pages now describe the business as "Progressive Home, formerly American Strategic Insurance (ASI)," still based in St. Petersburg.

The ASI companies still underwrite the policies. AM Best's 2026 rating release lists American Strategic Insurance Corp., ASI Preferred, ASI Home, ASI Lloyds (Texas), ASI Select and ASI Assurance, along with Progressive Property Insurance Company, among Progressive's rated members.

Homeowners coverage

Progressive Home writes homeowners (HO-3), condo and renters policies. Its standard homeowners policy carries the six usual coverages: dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, personal liability and medical payments to others. Progressive's coverage pages list water backup and sump discharge or overflow coverage and personal injury coverage (libel, slander, false arrest) as options, and recommend scheduling jewelry, art and other items that exceed the policy's special limits.

A homeowner who buys through Progressive gets matched to one of several carriers. For homeowners policies, Progressive's carrier list includes American Integrity Insurance, American Modern Insurance Group, Bamboo, Hippo, Homesite Insurance, Nationwide, Openly, Plymouth Rock, RLI, Stillwater, Tower Hill Insurance and TRUE as well as Progressive Home. Dwelling fire (landlord) policies go to American Modern, Foremost or RLI, not Progressive Home. Coverage, roof settlement terms and claims service differ by carrier, so compare the actual policy forms rather than the Progressive brand on the quote.

Discounts and savings

Progressive lists discounts for bundling home and auto, quoting at least 10 days before the policy starts, burglar and fire alarms and other safety devices, buying a new home or switching from a renters policy, receiving documents by email, newer construction and paying the 12-month premium in full. In Florida, homes with Florida Building Code-certified roof or wind mitigation features can earn an additional wind mitigation discount; homes built in 2002 or later get policy credits automatically.

One benefit applies only when Progressive Home underwrites the house: if a single event damages both your home and your car and both are insured with Progressive, you pay one deductible rather than two. Progressive says bundling saves an average of 7% on auto in most states. See bundling home and auto insurance: when it pays for when a bundle pays.

Where it sells and recent market moves

Progressive quotes homeowners coverage across the country, but the underwriting appetite of Progressive Home itself has narrowed. Since 2022 it has been reducing exposure in what Progressive calls more catastrophe-prone markets:

  • Florida. Progressive nonrenewed about 56,000 Florida policies in 2022, then said in 2023 it would not renew about 100,000 more, roughly half its Florida book, starting in May 2024 on a rolling 12-month basis. It stopped writing Florida DP-3 dwelling policies (rentals and second homes) and kept owner-occupied homes. Florida held 6.5% of U.S. single-family homes but more than 17% of homes Progressive Home insured. Loggerhead Reciprocal offered replacement policies to affected customers.
  • Texas and other states. In September 2024 Progressive said it was "temporarily restricting new homeowners (HO3) business for certain agents in several states including Texas."
  • 2025-2026. Progressive's first-quarter 2026 report said its "Blueprint for the Future" plan had restored property profitability in most states and that it was "selectively increasing availability," while still moderating homeowners growth.

Claims

Report a claim online at progressive.com or call 800-776-4737; Progressive's claims line routes property callers to the insurer that wrote the policy. Progressive Home (ASI) claims go directly to 866-274-5677. If a partner carrier wrote your policy, Progressive's property claims page lists that company's number, such as Homesite, Hippo, Tower Hill or American Integrity. Progressive runs a National Catastrophe Response Team for hurricanes, hail and tornado events, and its partner carriers use contractor networks you may be offered after a loss; you can still use your own contractor.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) financial strength rating, stable outlook, of Progressive's insurance companies, including the ASI companies and Progressive Property Insurance Company, on May 1, 2026. AM Best noted that the property segment had produced an underwriting profit for a third straight year after rate increases. Progressive's personal property business ran a 78.3 combined ratio in the first quarter of 2026.

J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study, released March 17, 2026, listed Progressive Home among the insurers scoring above the study average (the release did not give its score).

Who it suits

Progressive Home makes the most sense for a household that already insures cars with Progressive and wants one company, one app and, if Progressive Home underwrites the house, one deductible when a storm hits both. Its comparison tool also helps shoppers who want several carriers' prices at once. It suits coastal and hail-belt homeowners less well: the company has been shrinking exactly those books, and a quote there may come from a partner with different service and claims practices.

  • Strengths: A+ (Superior) AM Best rating; single-deductible benefit for bundled home and auto; quotes from many carriers in one place; above average in J.D. Power's 2026 claims study.
  • Weaknesses: Large Florida nonrenewals in 2022-2025 and new-business restrictions in Texas in 2024; the insurer on a "Progressive" home policy may be a third party; landlord (dwelling fire) policies go to other carriers; few homeowners endorsements listed publicly.
