Overview

Homesite Insurance is a Boston property and casualty insurer owned by American Family Insurance. Many homeowners who carry a Homesite policy never shopped for "Homesite" at all: they bought home insurance through another company's agency, often alongside a car policy, and Homesite was the insurer behind it. The GEICO Insurance Agency lists the Homesite companies among the carriers it places homeowners, condo and renters business with, and Progressive lists Homesite as one of its homeowners, condo and renters carriers.

Homesite has no NAIC ranking of its own. Its premiums are counted in the American Family Insurance Group, which ranked #6 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $9.72 billion (5.14% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Homesite and the group's partner business help explain why American Family appears in the 2025 top 10 in states where it has no exclusive agents, including California (9th), Texas (7th) and New Jersey (4th).

Homesite began as a direct writer that sold online and by phone. That has changed: its website now says that starting a quote takes you to American Family's website. Existing Homesite policyholders still deal with Homesite for service and claims.

History

Homesite was founded in 1997 and says it was one of the first companies to let customers buy home insurance online in a single visit. Most of its growth came through alliances with other insurers and financial services companies that offered Homesite home coverage alongside their own products.

In September 2013 American Family agreed to buy Homesite Group for $616 million. At the time Homesite sold in 46 states and the District of Columbia, was the 24th-largest U.S. homeowners insurer, and had written $548 million of premium in 2012. Its owners included Alleghany Corporation (about 28%), funds managed by Metalmark Capital and The Plymouth Rock Company. American Family said its own agents would remain its main distribution channel; Homesite gave it a direct and partner channel.

Since then, American Family has consolidated its direct and partner brands. In December 2025 its CONNECT partner brand became American Family Insurance, and Homesite's site now routes personal quotes to American Family. Homesite's list of underwriting companies now also includes Midvale Indemnity Company and several Main Street America companies.

Homeowners coverage

Homesite writes homeowners (HO-3), condo (HO-6) and renters (HO-4) policies. Its customer notices refer to the ISO homeowners forms HO 00 03 and HO 00 06, and it publishes a comparison of the 1991 and 2011 editions of the HO-3, a sign that its policies are built on the standard HO-3 structure: the house on an open-perils basis and belongings on a named-perils basis unless you buy broader coverage. Homesite's home page describes coverage for the dwelling (based on the cost to rebuild), personal property, loss of use and medical payments to others, plus liability.

Optional coverages listed on Homesite's site:

  • extended coverage on the home, adding 25% or 50% of the dwelling limit if rebuilding costs more than the limit (a form of extended replacement cost);
  • identity theft coverage up to $15,000 of expenses;
  • personal injury coverage for libel, slander and invasion of privacy claims;
  • open-perils coverage for scheduled valuables such as jewelry, furs, cameras, musical instruments, silverware, fine arts and golf equipment;
  • riders for earthquake, sewer backup and food spoilage after a power outage.

Homesite also says it has partnered with Wildfire Defense Systems (WDS), which can send qualified fire crews to protect insured homes during a wildfire at no extra cost, although it cannot guarantee the service. Flood is excluded, but Homesite offers separate flood quotes through an online flood portal.

In Texas the paperwork can be confusing. A Texas policy may be issued by Homesite Insurance Company or Homesite Indemnity Company; alternatively, property coverage may be written by Ranchers & Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and liability by Homesite Lloyd's of Texas. Check the company name on your declarations page.

Discounts and savings

Homesite's site does not publish a general discount list; prices and discounts are shown in the quote, often through the partner selling the policy. For customers who come through GEICO, the bundling saving is a multi-policy discount on the GEICO auto policy (see bundling home and auto insurance: when it pays).

Two state-required credits are documented. In Colorado, Homesite offers a discount from July 1, 2026 on homeowners policies for homes in a Firewise USA-designated community, under House Bill 25-1182. In California, policyholders can request wildfire mitigation credits under the state's mitigation regulation by returning a form with proof of the community designation or the completed home-level measures; the form depends on whether your policy is with Homesite Insurance Company of the Midwest or Homesite Insurance Company of California.

Where it sells and recent market moves

The Homesite companies hold licenses in most states and the District of Columbia. Homesite Insurance Company alone holds certificates of authority in 46 states and D.C., and separate Homesite companies are licensed in California, New York, Illinois and Georgia, with Homesite Lloyd's of Texas in Texas. Availability for a given address depends on the partner channel you come through and on underwriting.

The main change for shoppers is that you can no longer get a personal quote on homesite.com; the site sends you to American Family. On the product side, Homesite withdrew its manufactured home insurance product in Oregon effective September 15, 2024, after state approval in July 2024; Oregon homeowners and renters policies were not affected.

Claims

Report a claim by phone at 866-621-4823 or online after logging in to your Homesite account. Homesite says a desk adjuster normally manages the claim and decides coverage, and a field adjuster may inspect the home and write an estimate; some claims go to an independent adjusting company hired by Homesite. Homesite may recommend preferred contractors but says the choice of contractor is yours. Where a settlement holds back recoverable depreciation, you recover it by sending the adjuster invoices, receipts and proof of payment once repairs are done.

If you bought through GEICO, its partner claims page lists a separate Homesite property claims number, 866-535-8768. Calling the number on your own policy documents is the safest choice.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating of the Homesite companies, including Homesite Insurance Company, Homesite Indemnity Company, Homesite Insurance Company of the Midwest, Homesite Insurance Company of California and Homesite Lloyd's of Texas, on September 24, 2025, as part of its stable-outlook affirmation of American Family Mutual and its core affiliates. Homesite's own "Our Company" page still cites an AM Best rating as of September 30, 2022.

State regulators can overrule its decisions. In October 2025 Maine's Bureau of Insurance, after a hearing requested by a policyholder, barred a nonrenewal by Homesite Insurance Company of the Midwest: the company had cited a dog with a bite history but could not show that a bite occurred on the insured property, which Maine's cancellation law requires. Most states give homeowners some way to contest a nonrenewal; see your home insurance was nonrenewed: what to do now.

Who it suits

Homesite suits a homeowner who already has auto insurance with a company like GEICO or Progressive and wants a home policy from a large, A-rated group without a local agent. It suits less well someone who wants to deal with one brand from quote to claim: you may buy through one company and file claims with another, and Homesite itself no longer quotes directly.

  • Strengths: A (Excellent) from AM Best (September 2025) as part of the American Family group; widely available through partner insurers; extended dwelling coverage of 25% or 50%; wildfire defense service included.
  • Weaknesses: no direct personal quotes on homesite.com; no published discount list; service split between the selling partner, which cannot make coverage or claim decisions, and Homesite; its own site still cites a 2022 rating date.
