GEICO Homeowners Insurance (GEICO Insurance Agency) homeowners insurance

Overview
GEICO is one of the best-known names in insurance, but when you buy "GEICO homeowners insurance" you are almost always buying a policy from another company. GEICO's own insurance companies are built around auto insurance. Home, condo, renters, landlord and mobile home coverage is sold through the GEICO Insurance Agency, an agency owned by GEICO that, in its own words, shops "a network of trusted partner carriers" and matches you with one. The partner insurer writes the policy, sets the coverage and price, and pays the claims. GEICO's published list of these companies states that each insurer alone is financially responsible for its own policies.
That is why the name on your declarations page may be Homesite, Travelers, Liberty Mutual, National General, Hippo or another company entirely. In that sense the agency works much like an independent agency, except that it is owned by GEICO and sells under the GEICO name.
GEICO is part of the Berkshire Hathaway Group, which ranked #73 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $277.3 million (0.15% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. That small figure comes mainly from Berkshire Hathaway GUARD and other Berkshire specialty units, not from GEICO customers' homes: those premiums are counted in the partner insurers' groups.
History
Leo and Lillian Goodwin founded GEICO, the Government Employees Insurance Company, in 1936, originally to insure government employees and military personnel. Warren Buffett first bought GEICO stock in 1951 as a business student, and in 1996 Berkshire Hathaway bought the rest of the company, making GEICO a wholly owned subsidiary. GEICO has sold auto insurance in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. since entering Massachusetts in 2009. Its corporate headquarters, long in Chevy Chase, Maryland, is now listed at 7272 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda.
GEICO describes itself as the third-largest private passenger auto insurer in the United States, with twelve affiliated companies serving drivers. Home coverage is the exception: instead of a GEICO home insurer, the GEICO Insurance Agency offers policies from outside companies alongside GEICO auto policies, and its published partner list now runs to dozens of insurers.
Homeowners coverage
Coverage depends entirely on the partner that writes your policy. GEICO's homeowners page describes the standard pieces (dwelling, personal property, personal liability, other property damage and additional living expenses) and offers flood, earthquake and umbrella coverage as extras. How a claim is settled, whether the roof is covered at replacement cost or on a payment schedule, which endorsements are available and what the deductibles are all come from the partner's own policy forms.
The GEICO Insurance Agency's published list of homeowners partners includes:
- national and regional insurers such as Travelers, Liberty Mutual and Safeco, Homesite, National General, Stillwater, RLI, Narragansett Bay, Homeowners of America and Interboro;
- high-value home insurers such as Chubb, AIG and PURE (Privilege Underwriters Reciprocal Exchange);
- digital insurers such as Hippo and Lemonade;
- coastal and Florida specialists such as SageSure, Security First, Universal Property & Casualty, Heritage, Homeowners Choice, TypTap and Cabrillo (Safe Harbor and US Coastal);
- specialty writers for manufactured homes and hard-to-place homes, including American Modern, Assurant and Foremost;
- surplus lines markets through intermediaries such as TAPCO and All Risks, and the state plans of last resort, the California FAIR Plan and Citizens Property Insurance Corporation in Florida.
For earthquake, the agency lists Palomar, Stillwater, AIG and Arrowhead; for flood, NFIP coverage and private flood carriers. In a hard market such as California or coastal Florida, the "GEICO" quote may therefore be a FAIR Plan, Citizens or surplus lines policy, which carries different protections: surplus lines insurers are generally not covered by state guaranty funds, for instance. Read the declarations page before you sign.
Discounts and savings
The main GEICO discount is on the car side. GEICO says that when you bundle home and auto through the GEICO Insurance Agency you get a multi-policy discount on your GEICO auto policy; renters, condo and motorcycle policies can also qualify. Discounts on the home policy itself, such as protective-device, new-home or claims-free credits, are set by the partner insurer and vary by company and state. See bundling home and auto insurance: when it pays for how to judge whether a bundle saves money overall.
Where it sells and recent market moves
GEICO offers home insurance quotes nationwide through its agency, with homeowners guides for nearly every state. Which partner you are offered depends on your address and the home: the agency says its partners differ in strengths by region, type of home and risk profile. Because the agency places business with many partners, a new quote, for example when you shop at renewal, may come from a different company than your current policy.
The agency also says it handles the switch for you: it coordinates with your mortgage company and escrow account, shows proof of insurance to the lender and helps cancel your old policy so there is no gap in coverage.
Claims
Home claims go to the partner insurer, not to GEICO. GEICO's claims page has a "File a Claim with an Insurance Partner" directory with each partner's claim number. Some examples it lists:
| Partner on your policy | Claims number listed by GEICO |
|---|---|
| Homesite | 866-535-8768 |
| Travelers | 800-252-4633 |
| Liberty Mutual | 800-225-2467 |
| National General | 877-365-8693 |
| Foremost | 800-527-3907 |
| Hippo | 855-999-9746 |
Some partners publish different numbers on their own sites (Homesite, for example, lists 866-621-4823), so use the claims number printed on your policy documents first. GEICO's property insurance line, 800-241-8098, is its number for homeowners, renters, condo, mobile home and flood policies sold through the agency.
Ratings and reputation
GEICO's own financial strength ratings apply to GEICO's insurance companies, not to the partners writing home policies. To judge a GEICO home policy, look up the rating of the company named on the declarations page. Among the larger partners, AM Best affirmed Homesite's A (Excellent) rating in September 2025, the Liberty Mutual companies' A (Excellent) in September 2025, and the Allstate Insurance Group members' A+ (Superior) in September 2026; National General says its own companies are rated A+ by AM Best. State plans such as the California FAIR Plan and Florida Citizens are not rated the same way. J.D. Power's home insurance studies rank the underwriting companies, not the GEICO agency.
Who it suits
GEICO's agency suits a GEICO auto customer who wants a home quote without calling several companies and values the auto multi-policy discount. It suits less well someone who wants one company for sales, service and claims, or who wants to choose a specific insurer: you find out who your insurer is from the quote, and claims and policy changes run through that partner.
- Strengths: one place to shop many insurers; multi-policy discount on the GEICO auto policy; help coordinating escrow and canceling old coverage; partners range from Chubb and PURE to specialty manufactured home writers.
- Weaknesses: GEICO does not underwrite the home policy, so coverage, claims service and financial strength vary by partner; a new quote may come from a different partner than your current policy; in tough markets the quote may be a FAIR Plan, Citizens or surplus lines policy; claim numbers listed by GEICO can differ from the partner's own.
