GEICO Homeowners Insurance (GEICO Insurance Agency) vs Progressive Home

GEICO's agency places home policies with partner insurers; Progressive underwrites its own (rated A+) and also sells partner carriers' policies.

Verdict

Both names sit on auto insurers and both quote home insurance online or by phone, so they look alike. They are built differently. GEICO does not underwrite most home policies. The GEICO Insurance Agency, owned by GEICO (a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary), shops a network of partner carriers and matches you with one. That partner sets the coverage and price and pays the claims. Progressive Home, the former American Strategic Insurance of St. Petersburg, Florida, is a real homeowners insurer: the Progressive Group ranked #12 among U.S. homeowners groups by 2025 premiums ($3.34 billion, 1.77%, per NAIC data). Progressive also runs an in-house agency, Progressive Advantage Agency, that places business with unaffiliated carriers, so a Progressive quote may not be a Progressive Home policy.

The practical result is that the company name on the quote tells you less than the name on the declarations page. With GEICO, financial strength, roof settlement terms, endorsements and claims handling belong to whichever partner you land with, and the list ranges from Chubb and PURE to surplus lines markets, the California FAIR Plan and Florida Citizens. With Progressive Home, AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) rating of its insurance companies on May 1, 2026, and J.D. Power's 2026 Property Claims Satisfaction Study listed it above the study average. If a Progressive partner writes your policy, those facts do not carry over.

Market behavior also differs. Progressive Home has been shrinking coastal and hail-prone books since 2022, including about 100,000 Florida nonrenewals starting May 2024 and new-business limits in Texas in September 2024, though its first-quarter 2026 report said it was selectively increasing availability. GEICO's agency keeps quoting nationwide but cannot promise which insurer you will get.

Choose GEICO if

  • You already have GEICO auto and want the multi-policy discount on your GEICO auto policy when you bundle home through the agency.
  • You want one quote that reaches a wide set of markets, including Chubb and PURE for high-value homes, Foremost and American Modern for manufactured homes, or state plans.
  • You want help with the switch: the agency says it coordinates with your mortgage company and escrow account and helps cancel the old policy.
  • You are comfortable learning the insurer from the quote, with claims going to the partner.

Choose Progressive Home if

  • You insure cars with Progressive and the house is underwritten by Progressive Home, where one event damaging both is subject to one deductible.
  • You want a home insurer with its own A+ (Superior) AM Best rating and an above-average J.D. Power 2026 claims result.
  • You want several carriers' prices in one place, including Hippo, Homesite, Nationwide, Openly and Tower Hill, or an independent agent.
  • You are in a market where Progressive Home is writing owner-occupied homes. Ask whether your address is open.

Before you decide

Get the named insurer on each quote, then compare those insurers, not the brands. Ask for the same Coverage A, deductibles and endorsements, and confirm the insurer is writing new business at your address. Where it sells homeowners insurance Home quotes are offered nationwide through the GEICO Insurance Agency; the partner insurer, coverage and price depend on the address. Progressive quotes homeowners insurance nationally, but in many states and ZIP codes the policy is written by a partner carrier; Progressive Home itself has cut exposure in coastal, wildfire and hail-prone markets since 2022 and stopped writing Florida rental dwellings (DP-3) in 2024.
Recent market moves GEICO's agency lists dozens of homeowners partners, including surplus lines markets and the California FAIR Plan and Florida Citizens, so the insurer behind a GEICO quote varies by address.
