Overview

Bamboo Insurance is a managing general agent (MGA), not an insurance company. Bamboo Ide8 Insurance Services, LLC prices and underwrites the policy, sells and services it and handles claims, but a separate carrier issues the policy and bears the risk. For most of Bamboo's California homeowners business that carrier is Sutton National Insurance Company, the admitted (state-licensed) member of Sutton National Group, a Delray Beach, Florida program carrier. Bamboo also places business with Incline P&C, with MS Transverse since July 2026, and with surplus lines markets such as Accredited and Lloyd's. Check the carrier named on your quote and declarations page.

Because the NAIC counts premium under carriers, Bamboo has no rank of its own. Sutton National Group ranked #45 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $548.7 million (0.29% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data, and most of that is California homeowners business written for Bamboo. Bamboo's own IPO filing put its managed premium at $766 million in 2025, up 58% in a year, and its share of the California homeowners market at about 4% at the end of 2025.

Bamboo grew by staying in California as State Farm and other large insurers stopped writing new policies there in 2023. It is headquartered in Midvale, Utah, and has written homeowners coverage in Texas since September 2025.

History

John Chu founded Bamboo in 2017 and remains CEO. The company built its business on California homeowners and dwelling coverage, using detailed property data to price individual homes rather than whole neighborhoods.

In October 2023 White Mountains Insurance Group agreed to buy about 70% of Bamboo, investing about $285 million, and the deal closed in early 2024. Under White Mountains, managed premium more than doubled to $484 million in 2024. On October 3, 2025 White Mountains agreed to sell control to funds advised by CVC Capital Partners at a $1.75 billion enterprise value. The sale closed December 5, 2025: White Mountains received $848 million in cash and kept an interest of about 15%.

Bamboo filed for a U.S. initial public offering in August 2026 under the ticker BMB on the New York Stock Exchange. The deal was sized at 35 million shares at $18 to $20, all sold by existing holders, and listed revenue of $321 million for the 12 months to June 30, 2026. On September 22, 2026, hours before pricing, Bamboo postponed the IPO, citing market conditions; reports said it could be revived later.

Homeowners coverage

Bamboo's site describes homeowners and dwelling, condo, and landlord and rental property policies, with coverage for wildfire and water damage. Products differ by carrier and state:

  • Admitted California homeowners, mostly issued by Sutton National. The MS Transverse program that began July 1, 2026 targets Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco and offers Coverage A limits up to $3 million for eligible Difference in conditions (DIC) policy risks, deductibles up to $10,000 and mandatory water damage sublimits with tiers you choose.
  • Essential homeowners (California), an HO-2 named-perils product launched in July 2026 for older homes and homes with past losses that standard admitted carriers turn down. It covers owner-occupied and seasonal homes.
  • E&S Signature (California), a surplus lines homeowners product launched with Accredited in September 2025. Surplus lines policies are not subject to California's rate approval and are not backed by the state guaranty fund (see admitted vs surplus lines home insurers: what you give up).
  • Texas Essential Homeowner Program, an admitted product launched September 4, 2026 that lets you tailor roof coverage, water coverage and loss settlement to the home's age and condition.

A difference-in-conditions policy pairs with a California FAIR Plan fire policy and covers what the FAIR Plan leaves out, such as theft, water damage and liability. If your quote is built that way, you are paying two premiums to two companies. Bamboo's in-house agency can also arrange renters, auto, flood and smartphone coverage through other carriers.

Discounts and savings

The MS Transverse program in California includes a claim-free discount that grows the longer you stay claim-free. The Texas Essential program advertises discounts for claim-free homeowners and recent home buyers, plus credits for qualifying home improvements. Bamboo partners with Phyn on water-leak devices and has given eligible policyholders Ting electrical-fire sensors and monitoring from Whisker Labs at no cost. Ask which credits apply to your carrier and form, since they differ.

Where it sells and recent market moves

Bamboo writes homeowners insurance in California and Texas. Its agency arm places policies with other carriers, including State Farm, USAA and Progressive, for people outside those states or who do not fit Bamboo's products.

Most of its recent moves have added capacity in California: Incline P&C for admitted and non-admitted programs, Accredited for the September 2025 surplus lines product, and about $150 million of admitted capacity from MS Transverse in July 2026. For a policyholder, the carrier behind a Bamboo policy can change at renewal, and with it the rating, the claims rules and whether the policy is admitted.

Claims

Bamboo asks policyholders to report claims by phone at 877-333-6938; it does not take claims fully online. You can also email [email protected] with your claim or policy number. Bamboo says an advocate usually contacts you within a business day, and claims reported after hours or on weekends get a call by noon the next business day. It has published step-by-step wildfire claim instructions for affected California policyholders.

Ratings and reputation

Bamboo has no financial strength rating of its own; the issuing carrier's rating applies. AM Best rates Sutton National Insurance Company and Sutton Specialty Insurance Company A- (Excellent). In January 2025 AM Best affirmed those ratings, outlook stable, and ended a review opened in November 2023, after Oklahoma regulators approved an ownership restructuring that put control of the insurers in trusts run by independent trustees. Sutton's site still shows A- in October 2026.

Bamboo's claims practices have drawn criticism. In April 2025 the San Francisco Standard described several California lawsuits against Bamboo over water and storm claims denied or underpaid as wear and tear, and cited NAIC data compiled by Weiss Ratings showing that Sutton denied more than two-thirds of its 2024 California residential claims. Bamboo has denied wrongdoing in court filings and declined to comment on pending cases. If a claim is disputed, a complaint to the state insurance department is the usual next step (see how to file a complaint with your state insurance department).

Who it suits

Bamboo suits California homeowners who have been nonrenewed or turned away by larger carriers and want an admitted policy rather than the FAIR Plan alone, and Texas homeowners looking for a flexible, admitted alternative. It suits less well if you want a long-established insurer, a strong claims reputation, or one company for home and auto.

  • Strengths: kept writing California homeowners when large carriers pulled back; A- (Excellent) rated main carrier; several products, including DIC wrap-arounds for FAIR Plan policyholders and an HO-2 for hard-to-place homes; direct quotes online or by phone.
  • Weaknesses: an MGA whose carrier can change at renewal; some products are surplus lines with no guaranty fund protection; press reports of claim denials and lawsuits; ownership has changed twice since 2024 and the IPO was pulled in September 2026.
