Overview
MS Transverse is a fronting carrier, an insurance company that lends its license, rating and policy paper to managing general agents (MGAs) and passes most of the risk to reinsurers. It calls itself a "hybrid" fronting carrier because it keeps a share of the risk on each program. It does not sell homeowners insurance to the public. If its name is on your declarations page, you bought your policy from an MGA brand such as Openly, Bamboo or Wellington, and that brand handled your quote, billing and usually your claim, while an MS Transverse company is the legal insurer.
The NAIC group for its parent, MS&AD Insurance Group, ranked #93 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $199.7 million (0.11% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. That premium comes mainly from MS Transverse's MGA programs. The same data show a 2025 homeowners loss ratio of 95% (direct losses incurred against premiums earned), far above the 55.1% direct loss ratio for the homeowners line as a whole, according to the same NAIC report. Under the fronting model, much of that loss is passed to the reinsurers behind each program.
The issuing insurers are MS Transverse Insurance Company (admitted, or state-licensed), MS Transverse Specialty Insurance Company (surplus lines) and TRM Specialty Insurance Company, all domiciled in Texas. The group is run from Warren, New Jersey, with offices in New York and Texas.
History
Erik Matson and Dave Paulsson founded Transverse Insurance Group in 2018 with backing from Virgo Investment Group. It built its platform by buying existing insurers: first Financial American Property and Casualty Insurance Company, which became Transverse Insurance Company, and then, in January 2020, Arrowood Surplus Lines Insurance Company, which became Transverse Specialty Insurance Company and gave it a surplus lines carrier. AM Best rated both companies A- (Excellent) in April 2020.
Early programs included a $30 million flood capacity program for Neptune Flood in 2021 and a share of AmRisc's national surplus lines commercial property program in 2022. In August 2022 Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance agreed to buy Transverse for a little over $400 million, and the acquisition by MS&AD closed in January 2023. Matson stepped back to vice chairman in 2024 and Paulsson became CEO; by 2026 the company's leadership page lists Paulsson as chairman and John Fitzgerald, formerly president and chief financial officer, as chief executive.
MS Transverse says it finished 2024 as the largest hybrid fronting insurer in the United States by gross written premium, and it was named Fronting Carrier of the Year in 2022, 2024 and 2025.
Homeowners coverage
There is no MS Transverse homeowners form. Coverage, deductibles, roof rules, endorsements and discounts are set by each MGA's filed program, and the MGA's own profile is the place to read about them. The homeowners programs it has backed include:
- Openly: Transverse Insurance Company became a second carrier for Openly in 2024, starting in Wisconsin, with filings in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Openly said it would keep writing through its long-time carrier, Rock Ridge Insurance Company of Clear Blue Insurance Group, as well.
- Wellington: Wellington Risk Insurance Agency, part of Texas-based Wellington Insurance Group, lists MS Transverse Insurance Company, MS Transverse Specialty and TRM Specialty among the carriers for which it underwrites and administers residential property insurance.
- Bamboo: since July 17, 2026, MS Transverse Insurance Company backs about $150 million of admitted California homeowners and dwelling fire capacity for Bamboo, with deductibles up to $10,000, required water damage sublimits and a claim-free discount that grows with tenure, including Difference in conditions (DIC) policy policies written alongside the FAIR Plan.
- High-value homes: in September 2023 Millennial Specialty Insurance, an MGA owned by BRP Group, launched a program backed by MS Transverse for homes with replacement values up to $10 million and deductibles from $10,000 to $1 million.
The admitted versus surplus lines distinction matters. A policy from MS Transverse Insurance Company is written on rates and forms filed with the state and is generally backed by the state guaranty fund; one from MS Transverse Specialty is surplus lines, with freedom of rate and form and generally no guaranty fund protection (see admitted vs surplus lines home insurers: what you give up).
Where it sells and recent market moves
MS Transverse is licensed in all 50 states, but its homeowners premium is wherever its MGA partners write. The biggest recent move is California. The California Department of Insurance named MS Transverse "a new entrant to the California homeowners market" with a go-ahead effective July 15, 2026, and in August 2026 listed it among 11 groups that announced they are staying and growing in wildfire-affected parts of the state under the Sustainable Insurance Strategy. The Bamboo program is the vehicle.
For a policyholder, the practical risk with any fronted program is change at renewal: an MGA can move its book to another carrier, or a carrier can end a program, which can mean a new insurer, new terms or a nonrenewal notice.
Claims
MS Transverse does not publish a consumer claims line. Report a claim to the company shown for claims on your declarations page, usually the MGA (for example, Openly, Bamboo or Wellington) or a claims administrator it hires. Claims are paid under the MS Transverse policy, so if an MGA stops responding, the insurer named on the policy and your state's department of insurance are the next calls.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best upgraded the financial strength rating of the MS Transverse insurers to A+ (Superior) from A (Excellent) in June 2025, in line with Mitsui Sumitomo's group rating and citing the company's strategic importance to the parent. Wellington's carrier page lists the companies in AM Best's largest Financial Size Category, XV. The ultimate parent, MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, is one of the world's 10 largest property and casualty groups, according to the company.
Who it suits
You do not choose MS Transverse directly; you choose an MGA program it backs. Its A+ rating and Japanese parent make it one of the stronger names that can appear on a fronted homeowners policy, which matters for lenders and for anyone worried about a small insurer's finances. The trade-off is that your service, claims handling and renewal depend on the MGA, and the 2025 loss ratio shows how much catastrophe and claims pressure its programs carry.
- Strengths: AM Best A+ (Superior) since June 2025; owned by MS&AD; admitted and surplus lines paper in all 50 states; backs new California capacity under the 2026 Sustainable Insurance Strategy.
- Weaknesses: no direct customer service or claims line; coverage varies by MGA program; a 95% homeowners loss ratio in 2025 per NAIC data; surplus lines policies lack guaranty fund protection.
