Overview
Wellington Insurance Group is a Fort Worth managing general agent (MGA) that writes residential property insurance in Texas. Its operating company, Wellington Risk Insurance Agency, LLC, designs the products, underwrites and issues the policies and handles billing, and its affiliate Wellington Claim Service, LLC usually handles claims. The insurance itself comes from carrier partners whose names appear on your declarations page. Wellington's site lists 12 of them, including Sutton National Insurance Company (Sutton National Group), MS Transverse Insurance Company (MS Transverse), Trisura, Palomar Specialty, Obsidian and Incline Casualty.
That split explains the NAIC numbers. Wellington's premium is reported under its carriers, not under Wellington, so it has no rank of its own. Two of its main partners are ranked groups: Sutton National Group was #45 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written ($548.7 million) and MS&AD's U.S. group, mostly MS Transverse, was #93 ($199.7 million), according to NAIC market share data. Both write homeowners business for other MGAs as well, so those totals are not Wellington's.
Wellington sells only through independent agents who are appointed with it. It is known for a tiered Texas lineup that runs from a 16-peril replacement cost homeowners policy down to a bare-bones 8-peril actual cash value policy, priced through an online "virtual marketplace" that matches each home's characteristics to a carrier, price and coverage combination at the point of sale.
History
Wellington grew up as a Texas specialist in personal property lines, with a managing general agency, a claims service company and a premium finance arm. Paul Poston was chief executive when New York private equity firm Aquiline Capital Partners agreed on January 19, 2016 to become its majority investor; management kept a stake and continued to run the business. Aquiline lists the investment as realized.
On December 7, 2020 Truist Insurance Holdings, then a subsidiary of Truist Financial, announced it was buying Wellington Risk Holdings, Inc. Truist said Wellington would keep its name and join AmRisc, its MGA for catastrophe-exposed commercial property. In May 2024 Truist completed the sale of Truist Insurance Holdings to an investor group led by Stone Point Capital with Clayton, Dubilier & Rice; the business now operates as CRC Group, a Charlotte-based wholesale broker and MGA platform. Wellington's privacy notice lists AmRisc, LLC and CRC Insurance Group, LLC among its affiliates, along with Wellington Adjusting Services, Wellington Claim Service, Wellington Risk Consulting and Wellington Specialty Insurance Agency.
Beyond homeowners, Wellington sells services to other insurers: virtual company operations, run-off administration, and audit and consulting work.
Homeowners coverage
All of Wellington's published programs are for Texas properties:
- Select homeowners. Sixteen named perils, replacement cost on the dwelling, other structures and personal property, liability up to $500,000 and guest medical payments up to $5,000.
- Standard homeowners. Twelve named perils, replacement cost on the dwelling, other structures and personal property, liability up to $300,000 and medical payments up to $5,000.
- Value homeowners. Eight named perils, actual cash value on the dwelling, other structures and personal property, liability up to $100,000 and medical payments up to $2,000.
- Dwelling fire (Standard and Value). Named perils for rental and second homes. Standard pays replacement cost on the dwelling and actual cash value on contents, with a replacement cost option for owner-occupied homes, and liability up to $300,000; Value pays actual cash value on everything, with liability up to $100,000.
- Earthquake. Dwelling coverage equal to the underlying policy's dwelling limit, or higher up to $15 million total insured value, with $5,000 of contents and $1,500 of loss of use included.
The tiers matter more than they look. Every Wellington homeowners program is a named-perils policy, so a loss is covered only if it fits one of the listed causes (see named perils vs open perils coverage). Moving from Select to Standard to Value removes perils and lowers liability limits, and the Value tier pays depreciated value. Say a 15-year-old roof that would cost $20,000 to replace is half depreciated: on an actual cash value basis, the payment starts around $10,000, minus the deductible (see replacement cost vs actual cash value: why it matters). Wellington's policy page notes that deductibles can differ by cause of loss, so check the wind and hail deductible on your declarations page, and read the list of perils before choosing the cheaper tier.
Discounts and savings
Wellington does not publish a list of discounts. Pricing is set through its agent platform from the home's characteristics, and the biggest lever you control is the tier: the Value program trades coverage for price. Ask your agent which carrier the quote is on, what the wind and hail deductible is, and whether roof age or condition changes the price or the settlement terms.
Where it sells and recent market moves
Wellington writes homeowners, dwelling fire and earthquake coverage in Texas only. The state's homeowners market totaled $20.48 billion in 2025, according to NAIC data, and is dominated by national carriers, so MGAs like Wellington fill gaps for homes and owners those carriers price high or decline.
The main changes have been ownership: Aquiline in 2016, Truist in 2020 and the Stone Point-led CRC Group from 2024. For a policyholder, the more practical point is that Wellington can move business among its carriers. Your renewal declarations page tells you which company insures you that year, and with it the financial strength rating and whether the policy is admitted. If you live in the Texas coastal counties served by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, ask your agent whether wind and hail coverage must be bought separately.
Claims
Report claims 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 800-880-0474, by email to [email protected], by fax to 800-880-4049, or by mail to P.O. Box 1116, Fort Worth, TX 76101. Wellington Claim Service is usually the claims administrator. An examiner contacts you after the report, and you or a representative may need to be present for the inspection. A MyWellington online account shows policy and claim information and takes payments.
Ratings and reputation
Wellington has no financial strength rating of its own; your carrier's rating is the one that counts. As listed on Wellington's carrier page in October 2026, MS Transverse Insurance Company, MS Transverse Specialty and TRM Specialty are rated A+ (Superior) by AM Best; Palomar Specialty A (Excellent); Sutton National, Sutton Specialty, Trisura, Trisura Specialty, Obsidian, Incline Casualty and Agricultural Workers Mutual Auto A- (Excellent); and Aventus Insurance Company B++ (Good). AM Best last affirmed the Sutton companies' A- in January 2025, outlook stable. Several partners are specialty companies that typically write surplus lines business, which is not covered by the Texas guaranty association, so ask whether your policy is admitted (see admitted vs surplus lines home insurers: what you give up).
Who it suits
Wellington suits Texas homeowners and owners of rental houses who work with an independent agent and want a choice between broader replacement cost coverage and a cheaper, narrower actual cash value policy, including owners whose homes national carriers price high. It suits less well if you want open-perils coverage, a single well-known insurer for home and auto, or to buy direct.
- Strengths: three homeowners tiers plus dwelling fire and earthquake programs; liability up to $500,000 on the Select tier; 24/7 claims reporting with an in-house claims company; a broad panel of carriers, several rated A or A+ by AM Best.
- Weaknesses: Texas only; named-perils forms on every tier, and actual cash value on the Value tier; the carrier and its rating vary by policy and can change at renewal; one listed partner is rated B++, and some are specialty carriers without guaranty fund protection.
