Overview

Benchmark Insurance Company is not a brand most homeowners shop for. It is a fronting carrier: a licensed, rated insurer that issues policies for program managers and managing general agents (MGAs), which design, price and sell the coverage. Benchmark calls itself an admitted carrier in 49 states and Washington, D.C., built for partners "who need a broadly licensed, highly-rated, admitted insurer" to distribute their products. Most of the group's business is workers' compensation and specialty casualty; homeowners is a newer line.

Benchmark Holding Group ranked #81 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $237.3 million (0.13% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Most of that is in Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) lists Benchmark Holding Group as the 20th-largest homeowners group in the state in 2025, with $146.3 million of direct premiums written and a 0.74% share, down 4.63% from $153.4 million in 2024.

If your declarations page names Benchmark Insurance Company on a Texas home, the program behind it is almost certainly Swyfft. TDI's rate filing records describe the business as "Benchmark Insurance Company's Swyfft Texas Homeowners Program." Swyfft, LLC, a homeowners MGA, quotes, issues and services those policies; Benchmark is the insurer that owes the claims.

History

Benchmark belongs to Trean Insurance Group, based in Wayzata, Minnesota. Trean traces its start to 1996, when a management team led by founder Andrew O'Brien left a large publicly traded reinsurance broker to build an insurance services business; O'Brien remains executive chairman. Over time Trean assembled a set of specialty companies: Benchmark Insurance Company (domiciled in Kansas and commercially domiciled in California), Benchmark Specialty Insurance Company (an Arkansas excess and surplus lines carrier that AM Best first rated in February 2022), American Liberty Insurance Company (Utah), 7710 Insurance Company (workers' compensation for fire and emergency services), the claims administrator Benchmark Administrators, the management company Trean Corporation and the reinsurance intermediary Trean Re.

Private-equity firm Altaris first invested in Trean in 2015. Trean later traded on Nasdaq under the ticker TIG. In December 2022 it agreed to be taken private by Altaris, which already owned about 47% of the stock, for $6.15 per share in cash; the deal closed in April 2023 and the shares were delisted. Elisabeth Rosandich, previously chief underwriting officer, is now Trean's chief executive.

Homeowners business came through the program model. In October 2022 AM Best noted that, to reduce its concentration in workers' compensation, the group had added programs in accident and health, commercial auto, general liability and homeowners. Swyfft had already been acting as Benchmark's MGA since July 1, 2020, according to a TDI consent order; before that, Swyfft's Texas homeowners policies were written on Clear Blue Insurance Company paper under a 2017 agreement (see Clear Blue Insurance Group).

Homeowners coverage

Benchmark does not publish homeowners product pages, discounts or coverage options of its own. The Texas policy form, rates, underwriting rules and endorsements are filed with TDI for the Swyfft program, and Swyfft's quote and policy documents are where a homeowner sees the coverage choices. Ask the agent or Swyfft for the form number on the declarations page and the list of endorsements before you buy.

One Benchmark claim shows how a standard homeowners clause works in practice. In Huizar v. Benchmark Insurance Company (unpublished, January 7, 2025), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit upheld the denial of a February 2021 winter-freeze pipe-burst claim on a Tomball, Texas house. The policy covered "the dwelling on the 'residence premises,'" defined as the one-family dwelling where the insured resides, and the adjuster found the house vacant and under construction. Planning to move in later was not enough. If you buy a house you will renovate before living in it, tell the agent: a homeowners policy may not fit, and a builder's risk, vacant-dwelling or landlord policy may be the right product (see vacancy and unoccupancy exclusions).

Where it sells and recent market moves

Benchmark is licensed broadly, but its homeowners writing is concentrated in Texas through Swyfft. Its other programs and states are not public.

TDI's homeowners rate filing exhibit, published in March 2026, shows how quickly the Swyfft program's prices have moved. The overall rate change was 30.6% in 2022, 39.5% in 2023 and 13.5% in 2024. A 6.0% increase for new and renewal policies effective June 14, 2025 raised the base rate for water perils by 32.5% and for hail and non-hurricane wind by 12.5%. A later 2025 filing raised the policy fee from $100 to $125 with no change to base rates or rating factors, which TDI counted as a 1.32% overall change. Say your premium is $3,000 before fees: the fee change alone adds $25 a year. TDI puts Benchmark Holding Group's 2025 Texas homeowners loss ratio at about 21%, against 45% for the Texas homeowners market as a whole.

Claims

Report a loss to the claims office named on your policy. Benchmark says it works with third-party administrators for claims and asks policyholders to contact the claims office listed on their policy; its claims page adds that Texas policyholders may also use its online form or call 800-283-0622 to report a claim. For Swyfft-program policies, Swyfft's website lists a claims line of 877-799-3389 and customer support at 855-479-9338.

Swyfft's Texas licensing has been an issue. In a 2023 consent order, TDI found that Swyfft had acted as an MGA for Clear Blue and for Benchmark, and had adjusted claims for Clear Blue, without holding a Texas MGA or adjuster license. TDI granted Swyfft and its responsible licensed person MGA licenses, suspended them for two years with the suspension probated, required quarterly reports naming everyone adjusting Texas claims for Swyfft, and imposed a $55,000 administrative penalty. In a separate June 2023 order, Clear Blue paid $110,000 over its Swyfft arrangement and examination findings. These orders do not name a penalty against Benchmark itself.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed Benchmark Insurance Company's Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) and Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of "a" (Excellent), with a stable outlook, in October 2022; that is the most recent public AM Best release found. Benchmark's and Trean's websites, read in October 2026, still describe an A (Excellent) rating with a stable outlook. In that 2022 release AM Best called the group's balance sheet very strong but noted "significant reinsurance dependence," which is typical of a fronting model in which most risk is passed to reinsurers.

Benchmark has no J.D. Power ranking. No NAIC complaint index was found for its homeowners business.

Who it suits

Benchmark is the insurer of record, not a company you choose on its own. It matters to a Texas homeowner placed with Swyfft by an agent, and to a mortgage lender checking that the insurer is admitted and rated A (Excellent) by AM Best. The trade-offs come from the model: the MGA sets prices and handles service, so judge the program by Swyfft's quote, coverage form and claims handling, and judge the backing by Benchmark's rating and reinsurance. Compare it with other fronted Texas programs such as Wellington and with policies from carriers that sell under their own names (see MGAs and fronting carriers: who really insures your home).

  • Strengths: admitted carrier rated A (Excellent) by AM Best (affirmed October 2022); backed by a group whose balance sheet AM Best called very strong; as an admitted insurer, its policies fall under the state guaranty fund system rather than the surplus lines market.
  • Weaknesses: no consumer products, discounts or coverage details published by the carrier; Texas program rates rose by double digits three years running (2022 to 2024); its MGA operated without Texas MGA and adjuster licenses until a 2023 consent order; relies heavily on reinsurance.
