Slide Insurance vs Universal Property & Casualty
Slide is a 2021 startup that grew on takeouts and acquired books; Universal is a 1997 Florida carrier writing in 19 states. Both are Demotech A-rated.
Verdict
Both are publicly traded, Demotech A-rated Florida carriers sold through independent agents, and in 2025 they were neighbors in the state rankings: Universal Property & Casualty third with 7.61% of Florida premiums, Slide Insurance fifth with 6.49%, according to NAIC data. The big difference is age and how they got their policies. UPCIC began writing in Florida in 1997 and grew with the market. Slide was founded in 2021, began operating in February 2022, and built its book largely by assuming policies: about 147,000 from the liquidated St. Johns Insurance Company, about 91,000 from United Property & Casualty, renewal rights to about 86,000 Farmers policies in October 2023, and repeated Citizens takeout rounds. Slide reached 493,532 policies at the end of 2025, and many of those customers did not choose it in the usual sense.
Where they sell also differs. Slide is mostly Florida, with South Carolina and, since May 2026, California through surplus lines brokers; it bought $5.463 billion of aggregate reinsurance limit for 2026-27. Universal writes admitted business in 19 states. That California point matters: surplus lines means no California guaranty association protection and forms that are not state-approved.
On the policy, Universal offers HO-2, HO-3, HO-5 and HO-8 and lists optional personal property replacement cost and limited water backup. Slide sells HO-3, HO-6 and landlord policies in Florida (HO-5 only in South Carolina) and lists a hurricane screen enclosure endorsement paid at replacement cost, which many Florida policies limit. Neither profile publishes a roof settlement schedule.
Choose Slide if
- You received a Citizens takeout offer from Slide and want to compare it line by line before the deadline.
- You have a pool cage or screen room and want the hurricane screen enclosure endorsement.
- You value digital claims: an online claim form, virtual inspections and payment by Venmo, PayPal, ACH or virtual debit card.
- You are comfortable with a young carrier whose profile notes a $250,000 OIR fine in November 2025 over Ian and Idalia claims handling.
Choose Universal Property if
- You want a longer operating record in Florida, and a second rating (Kroll A-) beside Demotech A.
- You need an HO-2, HO-5 or HO-8 form, or own a home in one of the other 18 states it writes.
- You want your agent to compare it with other carriers, or to quote online through Universal Direct.
- You prefer scheduled jewelry, utility service line and personal injury as options on the same policy.

Before you decide
Quote the same Coverage A, hurricane deductible and endorsements, and ask each whether it will write your address now, since Florida carriers routinely pause binding when a storm threatens. If you came from Citizens, remember the 20% test and compare coverage, not just price. depopulation and takeout offers from state insurers of last resort explains takeout offers, Demotech ratings and Florida's insurers covers what an A from Demotech does and does not measure, Roof payment schedules and ACV roof endorsements helps with the roof question, and how to compare homeowners insurance quotes shows how to line the quotes up.
