Overview

Slide Insurance is a Tampa homeowners and condo insurer that went from launch to one of Florida's largest carriers in about four years. Its NAIC group, Slide Insurance Holdings Group, ranked #25 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $1.25 billion (0.66% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Almost all of it was written in Florida, where Slide was the fifth-largest homeowners group in 2025 with $1.22 billion and 6.49% of the state market.

Slide sells through independent agents, more than 5,000 of them in Florida and South Carolina, and describes itself as a technology-enabled insurer that uses its own data and analytics tools, including one it calls ProCast, to price and select risks. The parent company, Slide Insurance Holdings, Inc., has traded on Nasdaq under the ticker SLDE since its June 2025 initial public offering.

Many Slide customers did not choose Slide in the usual sense. The company built its book largely by assuming policies: from an insolvent insurer, from a carrier headed into receivership, from Farmers' Florida exit, and from repeated Citizens depopulation rounds. Policies in force reached 493,532 at December 31, 2025, up from 343,056 a year earlier.

History

Bruce Lucas, the former CEO of Heritage Insurance, and Shannon Lucas founded Slide in 2021, and it began operating in February 2022. Its first block of business came almost immediately: when St. Johns Insurance Company was ordered into liquidation on February 25, 2022, its roughly 147,000 Florida policies were transitioned to Slide effective March 1, 2022 with the same coverage and premium. Other insurers complained at the time that they had not been given a chance to bid for that business.

Shortly before United Property & Casualty was ordered into liquidation in February 2023, Slide assumed about 91,000 of its policies. In October 2023 it acquired renewal rights to about 86,000 Farmers homeowners policies in Florida, renewing from February 2024, after Farmers pulled its own brand out of the state; Farmers agents were offered Slide appointments. Citizens takeouts added more, quarter after quarter.

Slide priced its IPO in June 2025 at $17 a share, the top of its range. The company has since reported very high profits for a property insurer: 2025 net income of $444.0 million on $1.80 billion of gross premiums written, with a 52.1% combined ratio, and second-quarter 2026 net income of $134.9 million. Bruce Lucas is chairman and CEO; Shannon Lucas is president and chief operating officer.

Homeowners coverage

In Florida, Slide sells homeowners, condominium, landlord and commercial residential policies through agents. Endorsements and adjustable coverages listed on its site include a hurricane screen enclosure endorsement that pays to replace a pool cage or screen room at replacement cost, animal liability, water backup and overflow coverage, extra coverage for jewelry and other valuables, and adjustable limits for additional living expenses and other structures. The screen enclosure endorsement matters in Florida because many Florida policies limit hurricane coverage on screen enclosures.

As with any Florida policy, the declarations page will show a separate hurricane deductible, usually a percentage of the dwelling limit. Say a home is insured for $450,000 with a 2% hurricane deductible: the owner absorbs the first $9,000 of hurricane damage. Flood is excluded; Slide's claims page reminds policyholders to call their separate flood insurer for flood damage.

In South Carolina, Slide announced in September 2026 that it now offers HO-5, HO-3 and HO-6 policies through its subsidiary Slide Specialty Insurance Company. In California, Slide Specialty writes residential property as a surplus lines insurer placed through licensed surplus lines brokers, which means no California Insurance Guarantee Association protection and policy forms that are not state-approved.

Discounts and savings

Slide's website does not publish a discount list. Florida law requires insurers to give credits for documented wind-mitigation features such as roof-deck attachment, roof-to-wall connections and opening protection, so a current wind mitigation inspection is the first thing to hand a Slide agent. Ask the agent which other credits Slide files in your state.

Where it sells and recent market moves

Florida is still the core. OIR's takeout list shows Slide approved in almost every Citizens depopulation round from late 2023 through 2026, most recently in June 2026 with assumption dates of September 15 and 22, 2026. A Citizens policyholder who receives a Slide takeout offer on a primary home generally becomes ineligible to stay with Citizens unless Slide's renewal premium is more than 20% higher than Citizens' premium for comparable coverage, so compare coverage and deductibles, not just price.

Outside Florida, Slide has written homeowners business in South Carolina since 2022, entered California's surplus lines market in May 2026, and lists Rhode Island, Texas, New York and New Jersey among the states it serves. For the 2026–27 hurricane season it bought $5.463 billion of total aggregate reinsurance limit, 65% more than the prior year, including a $320 million Purple Re catastrophe bond issued in February 2026.

Claims

Claims can be reported online in about five minutes through Slide's digital claim form or by phone at 866-230-3758. Slide offers virtual inspections and payment by Venmo, PayPal, ACH or virtual debit card, alongside live adjusters. When emergency services are needed, it connects policyholders with pre-vetted contractors for roof tarping, roof repair and replacement, tree removal and water mitigation, and it asks policyholders to call before signing with any other contractor.

On November 3, 2025, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation fined Slide $250,000 after a market conduct examination of its Hurricane Ian and Idalia claims found that it used unappointed adjusters and failed to provide required disclosure statements (how these exams work).

Ratings and reputation

Slide carries a Demotech Financial Stability Rating of A (Exceptional), as displayed on its website in October 2026; like most Florida domestic carriers, it relies on a Demotech rating rather than an AM Best rating. It was not ranked in J.D. Power's national home insurance studies. Its financial results since the IPO have been strong and its reinsurance program grew sharply for 2026, but the company has a short operating history.

Who it suits

Slide suits Florida homeowners and condo owners, especially Citizens policyholders offered a takeout, who want a well-capitalized domestic carrier through an independent agent and value digital claims tools. It suits less well buyers who want a long track record, an AM Best rating or a national brand, and California buyers who need an admitted policy.

  • Strengths: Florida's fifth-largest homeowners insurer in 2025; Demotech A (Exceptional); $5.463 billion of reinsurance limit for 2026–27; hurricane screen enclosure and water backup options; digital claims with fast payment options.
  • Weaknesses: founded in 2021, so a short track record; concentrated in Florida; a $250,000 OIR fine in 2025 over hurricane claims handling; California business is surplus lines without guaranty fund protection.
