Overview
AAA – The Auto Club Group (ACG) is the Dearborn, Michigan AAA club behind the AAA home insurance sold across much of the Midwest and Southeast. With more than 14 million members in 14 states and two U.S. territories, it describes itself as the second-largest AAA club in North America. AAA clubs are regional, so the AAA policy a Michigan or Florida member buys comes from ACG's insurers, while a California member's comes from a different club entirely (see how the AAA clubs divide the country, and compare CSAA Insurance Group and the Auto Club of Southern California).
ACG's NAIC group, still recorded under its historical name, Automobile Club of Michigan Group, ranked #24 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $1.28 billion (0.68% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. About half of that came from Michigan, where ACG was the third-largest homeowners insurer in 2025 with 13.72% of the market. It was ninth in Minnesota (2.39%).
AAA membership is required: AAA Insurance is "made available to qualified members." Policies are sold by AAA insurance agents in club offices and call centers and through online quotes, so the model resembles a captive agent arrangement built around a membership organization.
History
AAA itself dates to 1902, when nine motor clubs with about 1,500 members met in Chicago to form a national federation; it grew into a roadside-assistance, travel and insurance organization that now counts more than 66 million members in the United States and Canada. The NAIC group name reflects ACG's roots in the Automobile Club of Michigan. Over the years ACG has absorbed neighboring AAA clubs and now serves members in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Puerto Rico.
Growth by affiliation continues. On October 1, 2026, ACG announced that it had affiliated with AAA Minneapolis, a club of about 200,000 members, raising ACG's Minnesota membership above 830,000 and its total to 14.2 million. Joseph J. Richardson Jr. is chairman, president and CEO.
ACG writes its insurance through several affiliated companies, and the one on your declarations page depends on your state. According to ACG's site, home policies are underwritten by Auto Club Insurance Association (Illinois and Michigan), Auto Club Group Insurance Company (Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska and Wisconsin), Auto Club Insurance Company of Florida (Florida), MemberSelect Insurance Company (Georgia, Minnesota and Tennessee), The Members Insurance Company (North Carolina) and Universal Insurance Company (North and South Carolina).
Homeowners coverage
ACG sells homeowners, condo and renters policies with the usual coverages for the dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use and liability. Its site highlights three optional coverages:
- Service line coverage for damage to exterior underground water, sewer and power lines (how it works); not available on condo or renters policies.
- Home Systems Protection, an equipment breakdown coverage coverage for central air conditioning, furnaces, water heaters and similar systems.
- Green upgrades, extra coverage to rebuild with more energy-efficient materials after a covered loss (see green rebuilding and eco-upgrade endorsements); not available on renters policies.
Flood is not covered by a homeowners policy. ACG agents sell flood insurance underwritten by a participating insurer of the National Flood Insurance Program (National Flood Insurance Program). In coastal states, check the hurricane deductible on your declarations page: ACG's Florida insurance leadership reminded customers in October 2026 that hurricane deductibles are often a percentage of the insured value, not a flat dollar amount. Say your Coverage A is $350,000 and the hurricane deductible is 2%: you would pay the first $7,000 of hurricane damage.
AAA agents can also review policies from other insurers, so an AAA quote is not always for an ACG-affiliated company; the agent should tell you which insurer is underwriting.
Discounts and savings
ACG lists three home savings features. A disappearing deductible reduces your deductible by $50 for each claim-free policy year, up to $500 (not on condo or renters policies). Claim-free rewards pay cash back for each year without a claim (not on renters policies). A multi-product discount applies when home insurance is bundled with AAA auto or life insurance (when bundling pays). Agents also offer a free "AAA Triple Check" review of household coverage and discounts. Additional discounts vary by state, so ask the agent for the full list.
Where it sells and recent market moves
As of October 2026, ACG says it provides AAA-branded auto, home and other personal insurance in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin. In Illinois, ACG serves a listed set of counties, mostly in the northern and central parts of the state. Colorado and Puerto Rico members are served by ACG for membership, but those markets are not on its list of states where it offers AAA-branded home insurance.
Its largest home market by far is Michigan, followed by Minnesota, where the AAA Minneapolis affiliation adds members who can now be offered ACG products. In the Southeast, ACG's footprint includes Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, all states exposed to hurricanes; in early October 2026 the club issued insurance and preparation guidance ahead of Hurricane Isaias.
Claims
Claims can be reported online at AAA.com/Claim, in the AAA Mobile app, or by phone at 855-206-8544, which ACG lists for claim service "any time, any day." Mail for auto and home claims goes to The Auto Club Group, Claim Department, PO Box 8001, Royal Oak, MI 48068-9826, with the adjuster's name and claim number on everything.
After a report, a claim representative is assigned. ACG's claims guide tells homeowners to make reasonable temporary repairs, keep receipts and photos, and not discard damaged property before inspection. You can choose your own contractor or use AAA's network of approved independent contractors, whose structure repairs come with a written workmanship warranty; on emergency water, smoke, fire and some storm claims, ACG says network technicians arrive within two to four hours of assignment. Suspected fraud can be reported to the AAA Fraud Hotline at 888-372-8383.
Ratings and reputation
Financial strength ratings are assigned to the individual underwriting companies, so look up the AM Best rating of the specific company named on your declarations page (for example, MemberSelect Insurance Company or Auto Club Insurance Association). On reputation, Morning Consult's 2026 Most Trusted Brands report ranked AAA Insurance as the most trusted insurance brand in America for the fourth consecutive year; that survey measures brand trust across all AAA clubs, not ACG's claims results or financial strength.
Who it suits
ACG suits AAA members in its 13 insurance states, especially Michigan, who want to keep home, auto, roadside and travel services with one organization and like having an agent at a local AAA office. It suits less well people who do not want to pay for AAA membership, homeowners outside ACG's footprint (another AAA club will quote instead), and shoppers who want a carrier whose rating and claims scores are easy to compare nationally.
- Strengths: Michigan's third-largest homeowners insurer in 2025; service line, equipment breakdown and green-upgrade options; disappearing deductible and claim-free cash-back rewards; local agents who can also quote other carriers.
- Weaknesses: AAA membership required; the underwriting company changes by state, which complicates research; home insurance is not offered in every state ACG serves for membership; financial strength ratings have to be checked company by company.
