Overview
Alfa Insurance is the insurance arm of the Alabama Farmers Federation, the state's Farm Bureau organization. The group is led by Alfa Mutual Insurance Company, a Montgomery-based mutual insurance company, and sells home, auto, farm, life and business coverage through its own agents, who work only for Alfa (see captive agents). Its homeowners business is concentrated in three states: Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. ALFA Insurance Group ranked #41 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $659.8 million (0.35% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data.
At home it is a heavyweight. Alfa was the second-largest homeowners insurer in Alabama in 2025, behind only State Farm, with $518.9 million in premiums and 16.22% of the state market. It ranked seventh in Mississippi ($91.3 million, 5.18%). Based on NAIC data, Alabama accounts for roughly four-fifths of the group's homeowners premium, which matters for how Alfa prices and underwrites: one bad spring of tornadoes in Alabama moves the whole company.
Alfa says it has more than 1 million policies in force, 477 service centers and more than 2,300 team members. In Alabama, it presents access to its insurance as a benefit of Federation membership, which carries annual dues; you do not have to farm to join.
History
The Alabama Farmers Federation was formed in 1921. It began selling fire insurance as a member benefit, and in 1946 Federation leaders established what is now Alfa Insurance to provide fire protection for rural residents. The insurer sold its first life policy in 1971 and changed its name from Alabama Farm Bureau Insurance to Alfa Insurance in 1987.
Part of the group was once publicly traded. Alfa Corporation traded on NASDAQ until April 15, 2008, when Alfa Mutual Insurance Company and Alfa Mutual Fire Insurance Company completed a merger that bought out the remaining shareholders for $22.00 a share in cash, making Alfa Corporation a wholly owned subsidiary of the mutuals. In 2005 Alfa acquired Vision Insurance Group, now Trexis, a Franklin, Tennessee non-standard auto insurer sold through independent agents. A Virginia expansion did not last: Alfa entered the state in 2001 by absorbing Virginia Mutual, renamed it Alfa Alliance in 2006, and stopped writing new Virginia policies on Aug. 1, 2018, after the unit failed to sustain profitability, according to Richmond BizSense.
Storms define Alfa's history. Hurricane Frederic cost it more than $22 million in paid claims and Hurricane Opal in 1995 about $79 million. The April 2011 tornado outbreak was the largest catastrophe in its history, with nearly $450 million in paid claims. Two months later Alfa announced it would not renew about 73,000 Alabama home policies, roughly one in six homes it insured, mostly landlords with multiple rental houses and homeowners with no other Alfa policy, and it temporarily stopped writing new policies on homes more than 10 years old, as Insurance Journal reported in June 2011.
Jimmy Parnell, a cattle and timber farmer elected Federation president in 2012, is Alfa's president, chief executive and chairman. Alfa began building a new home office in Montgomery in 2025.
Homeowners coverage
Alfa's homeowners policy carries the usual primary coverages: dwelling, other structures, personal property, personal liability and loss of use (see The six coverages in a homeowners policy, A through F). Alfa notes that most policies settle personal property at actual cash value, and it sells personal property replacement cost as an option; without it, a two-year-old laptop is paid at its depreciated value. Other options include scheduled personal property for guns, jewelry and other valuables above the policy's limits, and home-sharing coverage for short-term rental hosts.
The most distinctive add-on is Home Systems Protection, Alfa's equipment breakdown coverage coverage. It pays to repair or replace home systems after a sudden mechanical or electrical failure, with a $100,000 limit and a $500 deductible for equipment up to 14 years old, up to $2,000 for older items, and up to $10,000 for loss of use and spoiled food. Covered items run from HVAC, water heaters and well pumps to appliances, generators, solar installations, computers and pool equipment. Wear and tear is not covered.
Alfa also writes manufactured and mobile homes, renters coverage, landlord coverage for long-term and short-term rentals (through a tenant homeowners or commercial policy, depending on the property), farm owners policies and personal umbrellas. Flood is excluded from its homeowners policies, as it is from nearly all others. Your own policy form and your state's endorsements control.
Discounts and savings
Alfa's homeowners discount page lists four savings:
- Bundling home with auto and other Alfa policies.
- Mitigation credits for homes built or retrofitted to FORTIFIED standards, new or existing. Alabama law requires insurers to give FORTIFIED discounts, and the state's Strengthen Alabama Homes grants can pay for the upgrade (see The FORTIFIED Home standard and insurance discounts).
- Legacy, for children of Alfa policyholders buying their own homeowners policy.
- Home Alert, for smoke alarms, security systems, fire extinguishers and deadbolts.
A higher deductible also lowers the premium.
Where it sells and recent market moves
Alfa sells homeowners coverage in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi, the three states its agent locator covers. Alfa says it and its affiliates sell insurance in 14 states, but the other 11 are served mainly through Trexis and other affiliate products rather than Alfa homeowners policies.
Rates have been rising. In Mississippi, where Alfa Insurance Corporation and Alfa General Insurance Corporation write the business, the state's June 2025 rate filing bulletin lists overall increases of 19.74% for Alfa's legacy homeowners program and 19.01% for its rate-by-peril program, for renewals from Aug. 24, 2025. The May 2026 bulletin shows the next round going slightly the other way, -0.84% and -0.44%, but the legacy program's filing adds roof age rating, claims rating factors and hurricane deductible factors. An older roof can now cost more at renewal even if the overall rate level barely moved (see how roof age and material affect premiums).
Claims
Alfa customers report claims by calling 800-964-2532 or by logging in to MyAlfa online or in the Alfa2Go app; you must create a MyAlfa account to report a claim online. Trexis customers call 877-584-7466, and Alfa Alliance claims go to 855-253-2242. Customer service hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays. For property claims, Alfa describes a four-step process: report the loss, an inspection by a claims professional, an estimate checked against your policy, then payment. Its online Severe Storm Center covers tornado, hurricane, hail and flood preparation.
Ratings and reputation
Alfa says AM Best rates Alfa Insurance and Alfa Life Insurance Corporation A (Excellent) for financial strength, effective May 28, 2026. Alfa Mutual Insurance Company has held an AM Best rating of A or better since 1953, and Alfa Mutual General Insurance Company since 1973.
The outside ranking Alfa promotes is on the auto side: an A grade and second place out of 91 auto insurers in the CRASH Network 2026 Insurer Report Card, a survey of collision repairers about claims handling and payment practices.
The 2011 nonrenewal program shows a pattern worth knowing: after its record loss, Alfa protected customers who had several policies with it and trimmed the rest of its property book.
Who it suits
Alfa suits homeowners in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi who want a local agent and like the idea of one company for the house, cars, farm and life insurance. It suits less well people outside those three states, shoppers who want an independent agent to compare companies, and owners of older roofs in Mississippi, where Alfa's 2026 filings add roof-age rating.
- Strengths: second-largest home insurer in Alabama in 2025; A (Excellent) from AM Best (May 2026) and A or better for Alfa Mutual since 1953; Home Systems Protection adds up to $100,000 of equipment breakdown cover; FORTIFIED and legacy discounts.
- Weaknesses: homeowners sold in only three states and only through Alfa agents; about 19% to 20% Mississippi rate increases in 2025; a record of large nonrenewal waves after catastrophes (73,000 Alabama home policies in 2011) and an exit from Virginia in 2018.
