Overview
If your declarations page says Farm Bureau and you live in Mississippi, Arkansas, Colorado or Florida, the company behind it is very likely part of the Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Group. Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company, headquartered in Ridgeland, Mississippi, is a stock company owned by state Farm Bureau organizations, and it sits above a set of state-branded insurers: Mississippi Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company, Arkansas Farm Bureau Insurance Company, Colorado Farm Bureau Insurance Company and the two Florida Farm Bureau companies. Each state's policies are sold under the local Farm Bureau name, through exclusive agents in county or parish offices, to members of that state's Farm Bureau.
The group ranked #37 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $744.8 million in homeowners premiums, or 0.39% of the national market. It was the second-largest home insurer in both Mississippi (15.20% of the market) and Arkansas (13.04%), behind State Farm in each.
It is known for local agents and adjusters, for a claims training school, Farm Bureau Tech, that the company says is recognized nationally, and for a 2023–2025 stretch in which it absorbed weaker Farm Bureau insurers in neighboring states.
History
In 1947 the Farm Bureau federations of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi and Texas set up investment corporations to organize the company, and Mississippi chartered it on September 25, 1947. It started as an auto insurer for rural members. Mississippi Insurance Department examination reports trace the later ownership changes: the Louisiana, South Carolina and Colorado federations bought equal shares, Florida sold its stake back to the company, and Texas withdrew at the end of 2008, which is why Texas Farm Bureau Insurance is a separate company today. The life insurer that shares the agents, Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company, is a different company.
The group has grown by bringing state Farm Bureau insurers under the parent. Mississippi Farm Bureau Casualty was formed in 1986 as a wholly owned subsidiary and became a full member of the rated group through a 100% quota share reinsurance agreement, which AM Best recognized in February 2022. Colorado Farm Bureau's insurer, founded in 1950 as Colorado Farm Bureau Mutual Casualty Co., demutualized on July 1, 2019 and became Colorado Farm Bureau Insurance Company, a wholly owned subsidiary. The Florida Farm Bureau companies are also wholly owned. On August 1, 2025, Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Arkansas, which had been insuring Arkansans since 1950, demutualized, was renamed Arkansas Farm Bureau Insurance Company and became a subsidiary that cedes all of its business to the parent.
Homeowners coverage
Coverage is written state by state, so read the policy jacket to see which company issued yours. The parent's product chart lists homeowners, condo, renters, mobile homeowner, dwelling property, personal umbrella and flood in all six of its states.
The state companies publish slightly different menus. Arkansas lists optional personal property replacement cost, sewage backup, a personal articles floater and solar panel coverage, plus equipment breakdown. Colorado lists scheduled personal property and personal injury coverage, and places specialty homeowners and dwelling fire risks, such as rentals, vacant homes and homes with credit or loss problems, through brokerage partners. Mississippi lists the standard dwelling, other structures, personal property, additional living expense, liability and medical payments coverages, along with landlord, renters, manufactured home and flood policies. Florida writes homeowners and dwelling fire policies but says coverage "is not available in all areas of the state due to exposure restrictions."
Flood is a separate policy. Southern Farm Bureau Casualty is a FEMA Write Your Own company, so its agents can issue National Flood Insurance Program policies in their states. Ask the agent whether contents are insured at replacement cost or actual cash value by default; in Arkansas, replacement cost on personal property is an add-on.
Discounts and savings
Arkansas Farm Bureau publishes three homeowners discounts: a new home discount for houses less than 25 years old, a companion policy discount for insuring both home and autos with Farm Bureau, and theft and loss control discounts for alarms, smoke detectors, extinguishers and similar measures. It also names roof age as a rating factor. Florida Farm Bureau posts the state-required notice of premium discounts for hurricane loss mitigation, so a wind mitigation inspection can lower a Florida premium. Membership in the state Farm Bureau is required and carries its own non-insurance discounts. Other states do not publish a discount list, so ask the agent which credits a quote includes.
Where it sells and recent market moves
Farm Bureau agents in Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina sell this group's products. Homeowners premium is concentrated in Mississippi and Arkansas, which together account for about two-thirds of the group's 2025 total. NAIC counted Louisiana Farm Bureau ($131.2 million of 2025 homeowners premiums) and South Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual ($129.5 million) as separate groups, outside this group's figures.
The biggest change is consolidation. The Arkansas acquisition closed in August 2025, after AM Best had cut the Arkansas mutual to B (Fair). In Louisiana, members of Louisiana Farm Bureau Mutual voted 93.7% in favor of converting to a stock company, and in early 2026 the Louisiana Department of Insurance approved a plan for Southern Farm Bureau Casualty to buy it for about $46.7 million and rename it Louisiana Farm Bureau Insurance Co. An actuarial review cited the mutual's surplus falling from $165.6 million at the end of 2020 to $95 million in mid-2025. AM Best expected the deal to close in the second quarter of 2026. Louisiana policyholders were told they would keep their agents, coverage and local claims staff.
In Florida, homeowners coverage is limited by area because of what Florida Farm Bureau calls exposure restrictions. Coastal Louisiana and Florida homeowners who cannot get a Farm Bureau policy often end up comparing private carriers with the state plans, Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation and Citizens in Florida.
Claims
All of the state companies use one 24-hour claims line, 866-275-7322. You can also report a claim by logging in to your account on your state's Farm Bureau site, through the Mobile Agent app (which also lets you review policies and request roadside assistance), or through your local agent. Mississippi says it has adjusters in every county; Arkansas says it has agents and adjusters in every county.
The companies' own guidance follows the standard policy duties: protect the property from further damage, make reasonable temporary repairs and keep receipts, and prepare an inventory of damaged personal property showing quantity, description and value. For fire, call the fire department; for theft or vandalism, file a police report.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating of Southern Farm Bureau Casualty, Colorado Farm Bureau, Louisiana Farm Bureau Casualty and Mississippi Farm Bureau Casualty in August 2025 and revised the outlooks to stable from negative, citing a 2024 combined ratio of 95.9% after sizable rate increases and underwriting changes. At the same time it upgraded Arkansas Farm Bureau Insurance Company to A (Excellent) from B (Fair). That followed a July 2023 downgrade of the group from A+ (Superior) to A, after double-digit surplus declines through 2022. The parent's website still showed A (Excellent) in October 2026.
The Florida Farm Bureau companies are rated separately and lower: in April 2024 AM Best affirmed a B++ (Good) rating, with a negative outlook on the issuer credit rating, after Hurricane Idalia losses, crediting support from the parent. Some older Farm Bureau web pages still cite an A+ rating; that is out of date.
Who it suits
This group suits Farm Bureau members in Mississippi, Arkansas and Colorado who want a local agent and adjuster and one company for home, auto, farm and life, and who are comfortable that the agent sells only Farm Bureau products. It suits Florida members less well where homeowners coverage is restricted, and anyone outside its six states cannot buy it. Compare it with State Farm, Shelter Insurance and Allstate, and see how Farm Bureau membership works.
- Strengths: second-largest home insurer in Mississippi and Arkansas; A (Excellent) from AM Best with a stable outlook since August 2025; 24/7 claims line and local adjusters; can write NFIP flood policies.
- Weaknesses: membership required and sold only through Farm Bureau agents; coverage and discounts vary by state and are thinly documented online; Florida companies rated B++ with restricted homeowners availability; recent acquisitions of financially weaker state mutuals in Arkansas and Louisiana.
