Overview

Berkley One is the personal insurance business of W. R. Berkley Corporation, a Greenwich, Connecticut insurance holding company better known for commercial and specialty lines. It insures affluent and high-net-worth households: high-value homes, condos and co-ops, renters and rental properties, autos and collector vehicles, fine art, jewelry, wine and other collectibles, watercraft and excess liability. Policies are sold only through select independent agents and brokers, and they are issued by one or more of W. R. Berkley's insurance subsidiaries rather than by a company called Berkley One.

Because NAIC reports homeowners premium by group, Berkley One's book appears under the WR Berkley Corporation Group, which ranked #58 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $405.4 million (0.21% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. That makes Berkley One far smaller than Chubb or PURE in high-value homeowners, but it is backed by one of the larger U.S. property and casualty groups.

The target customer is specific. Berkley One's online quote request asks whether a home's replacement value exceeds $2 million, and whether a condo or personal property schedule exceeds $1 million; requests below those levels are told the company is not a fit. Expect Berkley One to be quoted alongside Chubb, PURE, AIG Private Client Select and Vault for the same house.

History

William R. Berkley founded W. R. Berkley Corporation in 1967 with $2,500 in initial capital, according to Berkley One, and built it into a Fortune 500 company made up of more than 50 operating units. By April 2016 the group had created a high-net-worth personal lines unit, overseen by corporate senior vice president Kathleen M. Tierney, and named its first senior executives. In December 2016 W. R. Berkley introduced the Berkley One brand, promising products in the second half of 2017.

Berkley One started writing in Illinois in 2017 and marked five years in the market in November 2022. Early reports placed the unit in Morristown, New Jersey; today its contact page lists a mailing address in Wilmington, Delaware. It expanded state by state, adding Minnesota and Wisconsin in 2018 and reaching 30 states plus the District of Columbia with the launch of Nevada and Idaho in January 2023. Tierney remains president. Berkley One Classics, its collector vehicle arm, traces its roots to 1974 in Luverne, Minnesota.

The parent's ownership shifted in 2025 and 2026. Under agreements signed in March 2025, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, part of Japan's MS&AD group, bought 15% of W. R. Berkley's voting common stock on the open market, completing the purchase in March 2026. The Berkley family and Mitsui Sumitomo intend to vote their shares in alignment, and W. R. Berkley remains publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

Homeowners coverage

The house policy is built for expensive, custom construction. Berkley One lists guaranteed replacement cost in most states, which pays to rebuild even if the cost runs past the dwelling limit, and a cash-out option on certain total losses for owners who would rather not rebuild. Coverage for rebuilding to current building code, debris removal and fire department service charges is included, and higher limits are available for landscaping, loss assessment, business property at home and the special limits on jewelry, silverware and other valuables. Optional add-ons include equipment breakdown coverage, service line coverage, home cyber coverage and family security expense coverage. Flood and excess flood insurance coverage are offered too.

Collections usually belong on a separate valuables policy rather than the homeowners form. Berkley One writes fine art, jewelry, wine and other collectibles on its Collect product, and personal excess liability on its Secure product. Say a client owns a $3.5 million house and $400,000 of jewelry: the homeowners policy's special limit on jewelry theft would cover only a sliver of that, so the jewelry would normally go on the Collect policy while the house carries the guaranteed replacement cost.

W. R. Berkley's licensing notice says certain coverages may be provided by a surplus lines insurer, which generally does not participate in state guaranty funds. Check the insurer named on your declarations page and whether it is admitted in your state.

Discounts and savings

Berkley One frames pricing credits as "premium savings factors" rather than a discount menu. It lists LEED-certified "green" construction, owning the home mortgage-free, a gated community or private patrols and a backup generator, and tells clients to ask their agent about other protections. Packaging home with auto, valuables and excess liability is the usual way to price a high-value account, though Berkley One does not publish a bundling percentage.

Its TrueRisk Consulting service sends a risk consultant to review more than 30 elements in and around the home, and its PlusOne Service Network refers vetted contractors for renovations and loss prevention even when there is no claim.

Where it sells and recent market moves

Berkley One currently quotes homeowners coverage in 30 states and Washington, D.C.: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. California is not on the list, nor are Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama; on the Gulf Coast only Texas and Florida are served. The company says it is expanding nationwide, but its last state launch announcement was Nevada and Idaho in January 2023. Since then its news has centered on collector vehicles, including product redesigns in Pennsylvania, Georgia and New York and relaunches in Arizona and Michigan in 2025.

Berkley One says it averages under an hour to make contact, including after hours and on weekends, and that property inspectors typically reach the home within 24 hours. It cites a network of more than 1,500 vetted, insured home contractors whose repairs carry a three-year workmanship warranty, and its Command Center tracks storms and posts preparation guidance. A PriorityOne team gives clients a single service contact by phone, text, email or chat.

Ratings and reputation

On June 29, 2026 AM Best affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A+ (Superior) for Berkley Insurance Company and its reinsured affiliates, the W. R. Berkley Insurance Group, and upgraded their Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating to "aa" from "aa-", with stable outlooks. AM Best cited strong underwriting results, consistent organic surplus growth and balance sheet strength it assesses as strongest. The same action raised the parent's issuer rating to "a" from "a-".

Berkley One is not ranked in J.D. Power's U.S. Home Insurance Study or U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study.

Who it suits

Berkley One suits owners of homes with replacement costs above roughly $2 million in its 30 states and D.C. who want guaranteed replacement cost, a cash-out option and valuables coverage from an A+ (Superior) group, placed by an independent agent. It suits less well Californians, owners of mid-value homes below its thresholds, or shoppers who want a long track record and published service rankings, where Chubb and PURE have more history in the segment.

  • Strengths: backed by W. R. Berkley's A+ (Superior) insurers, with the issuer rating upgraded in June 2026; guaranteed replacement cost in most states and a cash-out option; valuables, collector car, flood and excess liability under one brand; quick-contact claims commitments and a contractor network.
  • Weaknesses: not available in California, Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama; quotes only through appointed agents and only for high-value homes; no J.D. Power ranking; some coverages may come from a surplus lines insurer outside the guaranty fund system.
