Overview
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is the insurance arm of Indiana Farm Bureau, the state's farm organization. Its homeowners, auto, farm and business policies are underwritten by United Farm Family Mutual Insurance Company, an Indianapolis-based mutual insurance company, and its life insurance by United Home Life Insurance Company. It sells only in Indiana, through exclusive agents in county offices in all 92 counties, and you must join Indiana Farm Bureau to buy a home policy.
The group ranked #75 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $268.5 million (0.14% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Almost all of that is Indiana business: with $267.7 million and 7.54% of the state's homeowners premiums in 2025, it was Indiana's 4th-largest home insurer, behind State Farm, Allstate and Erie Insurance and just ahead of American Family Insurance. The company also calls itself the largest writer of farm insurance in Indiana.
It reports more than 450 agents and about 1,200 employees, all in Indiana. That local footprint, and the ability to insure a house, farm, cars and a life policy through one county office, is the main reason people choose it.
History
Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. established the insurance company on October 17, 1934, to give Hoosier farmers better insurance options than they could find elsewhere. Over the following decades it expanded from farm coverage into auto, home, life, business and renters insurance and opened it to any Indiana resident willing to join Farm Bureau. The family of companies now also offers Farm Bureau Bank products and Indiana Farm Bureau health plans through the same local offices.
Leadership has been stable. Joe Martin retired as chief executive at the end of 2020 after 40 years with the company, and Kevin Murphy became executive vice president and chief executive officer in January 2021. The life company, United Home Life, says it has held an A (Excellent) rating from AM Best for 65 consecutive years.
Homeowners coverage
Indiana Farm Bureau writes policies for houses, condos, mobile homes and rental properties, plus renters policies and farm coverage, so a farmhouse and its outbuildings can sit with the same company as the barn and the equipment. A standard home policy covers the dwelling and attached structures, other structures such as detached garages and fences, personal property anywhere in the world, additional living expenses, liability and medical payments to others. Condo policies carry limited dwelling coverage, and the amount of living-expense coverage depends on the coverage selection.
The endorsement to know is the Specified Additional Amount of Insurance for Coverage A, which the company says can pay up to 125% of the dwelling limit if a covered loss costs more than the limit, a form of extended replacement cost. Say your dwelling limit is $320,000 and a tornado destroys the house when contractors are scarce and rebuilding costs $380,000: the endorsement makes up to $400,000 available. The condition matters, though. You must report improvements that raise rebuilding cost, such as a finished basement or new kitchen, within 90 days, and the buffer only works if the base limit is accurate. The company also says it periodically adjusts limits on eligible home policies for inflation.
Other options are water backup and sump overflow, scheduled personal property for jewelry, firearms, art, collectibles and musical instruments, watercraft liability and physical damage, earthquake coverage and added protection for a home-based business. Flood is excluded; agents can place National Flood Insurance Program policies. The company's own FAQ explains the difference between replacement cost and actual cash value with a storm-damaged 10-year-old roof as the example, so ask your agent which settlement basis your roof and belongings carry (see Roof payment schedules and ACV roof endorsements).
Discounts and savings
The multi-line discount is the largest: up to 20% on homeowners when bundled with auto (and up to 23% on auto). Other home discounts listed are new home (under 15 years old), protective system, paperless (up to 5%), full payment (up to 5%) and an advance quote discount when you get a quote at least seven days before your current policy expires. Costs work in the other direction too. Monthly installment billing carries a $3.50 service charge unless you pay by electronic funds transfer, and credit card payments carry a third-party surcharge of up to 2.7%.
Membership is the entry fee. A primary Indiana Farm Bureau membership costs $36 a year, is open to anyone interested in supporting Indiana agriculture, and is required for homeowners, condo, renters, mobile home, farm and auto policies; it also comes with a small accidental death benefit and member discounts.
Where it sells and recent market moves
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance writes only in Indiana, with offices in every county; if you move out of state, you will need a new insurer. Within Indiana, policies move with you to a new county office.
Indiana's home insurance risk is mostly wind, hail and tornadoes, and the company has been through several large events, including the March 31, 2023 storms and tornadoes that hit Sullivan, Johnson, Clinton and Morgan counties. In August 2026 its chief actuary pointed to severe weather and higher repair, labor and material costs as sources of premium pressure, and urged policyholders to review deductibles, discounts and dwelling limits with their agents.
Claims
Customers can report a home claim online through their account or the mobile app at any time, or by calling the Customer Service Center at 800-723-3276; people who are not customers, such as a neighbor whose property you damaged, have a separate online reporting form. A claims representative is assigned, contacts you to gather information and investigates. After storms in Orange County in June 2023 the company set up drive-in claims centers where adjusters inspected damaged vehicles and gave estimates on the spot. Have your policy number, a description of the damage and the steps you took to prevent further damage ready when you call.
Ratings and reputation
On June 12, 2025, AM Best affirmed United Farm Family Mutual Insurance Company's financial strength rating of A (Excellent) with a stable outlook, the fifth year in a row at that level, and rated United Home Life A (Excellent) as well. Forbes named the company among America's Best Insurance Companies in 2023, and TechPoint named it a finalist for its 2025 Digital Transformation of the Year award.
Who it suits
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance suits Indiana homeowners who want a local agent they can visit, especially in rural counties and on farms, and who can bundle home and auto to capture the multi-line discount. It suits less well people who do not want to pay a membership fee, who want to compare several carriers through one independent agent, or who expect to move out of Indiana.
- Strengths: Indiana's 4th-largest home insurer, with offices in all 92 counties; A (Excellent) from AM Best, affirmed June 2025; an endorsement that adds up to 25% above the dwelling limit; farm, home, auto and life under one roof.
- Weaknesses: Indiana only; Farm Bureau membership ($36 a year) required; exclusive agents sell only this company's products; installment charges and credit card surcharges add to the cost.
