Overview
NYCM Insurance is the trade name of New York Central Mutual Fire Insurance Company, a mutual insurance company headquartered in the village of Edmeston in central New York. It writes homeowners, condo, renters, mobile home, auto, umbrella and small-business insurance, and it does so in one state only: New York. Policies are sold through more than 1,000 independent agents, and the company says it serves more than 575,000 customers with over 670,000 policies in force.
NYCM Insurance Group ranked #62 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $347.3 million (0.18% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Because every dollar of that is written in New York, the national rank hides its local weight: in 2025 NYCM was New York's sixth-largest homeowners insurer with 3.85% of the state market, behind State Farm, Allstate, Chubb, Travelers and Liberty Mutual, and ahead of PURE.
It is still a family-run mutual. Cheryl Robinson, president and chief executive, is the great-great-granddaughter of founder VanNess D. Robinson, and the company describes the family as being in its fifth generation of management. The group employs more than 900 people at its Edmeston home office and branches in Sherburne, Canajoharie and Orchard Park, near Buffalo.
History
New York Central Mutual was incorporated in Edmeston on April 11, 1899, by a group of 27 local businessmen and residents, and was chartered to write fire and lightning insurance in Otsego, Chenango and Madison counties. It wrote $2,912 of premium in its first year. Windstorm, tornado and earthquake coverage followed in 1920, and the company absorbed two small fire insurers in 1921 and 1923.
Homeowners policies arrived in 1956. NYCM's footprint once reached 26 states, in the 1960s, before it pulled back; it entered auto insurance in 1974 and from the mid-1970s concentrated its business in New York, which drove its growth from there. It bought the Orchard Park independent adjusting firm Albert F. Stager, Inc. in 1991, and on June 7, 2001 it launched A. Central Insurance Company, a subsidiary aimed at mid-market auto customers. The two carriers share results under a pooling agreement. In 2009 both were rebranded under the single NYCM Insurance name.
Recent changes have been operational rather than structural: digital claims reporting for home and auto in 2022, a 125th-anniversary campaign in 2024, and a multi-year renovation of all four offices that ended with the relocated Sherburne branch in October 2025.
Homeowners coverage
NYCM's homeowners program is built on New York versions of the ISO forms, sold in tiers. Its 2019 coverage guide describes:
- Classic Protection (NYC HO 00 03): the HO-3 special form, with open-perils coverage on the house, named-perils coverage on belongings, personal property at actual cash value unless you buy replacement cost, and no water backup coverage.
- Premier Protection (NYC HO 7): dwelling replacement cost up to 125% of the Coverage A limit, which is a form of extended replacement cost, open-perils coverage on belongings at replacement cost, higher special limits, $5,000 of water backup and personal injury coverage.
- Premier Plus Protection (NYC HO 7P) and Premier Plus High Value Protection (NYC HO 10): the high-value form raises the dwelling extension to 150%, ordinance or law to 20% of Coverage A, water backup to $10,000 and adds $25,000 of identity fraud expense coverage.
Say your Coverage A is $350,000 and a fire hits after a year of sharp contractor price increases: on the Premier form the dwelling extension makes up to $437,500 available. Section I deductibles in the guide run from $100 to $25,000. Condo, renters and mobile home policies are also sold.
Endorsements include equipment and appliance breakdown coverage with limits of $10,000 to $100,000 and a $500 deductible (not available on HO-2 forms), utility line expense coverage of $10,000 or $20,000 for underground water, sewer, electric and communications lines (see service line coverage), and valued possession coverage that schedules jewelry, furs, cameras, instruments and fine art on an all-risk basis. Boats, snowmobiles and golf carts can be added to the homeowners policy. Flood is excluded; NYCM's claims center routes flood claims on Wright Flood policies to that company. These details come from the company's brochures and pages, and your own policy and declarations page control.
Discounts and savings
NYCM lists a multi-policy discount, a claim-free discount after five consecutive years without a claim with any insurer, a retirement discount when everyone on the policy is 55 or older and at least one is not working full time, a work-from-home discount for named insureds working 20 or more hours a week at home (not combinable with the retirement discount), a home buyer discount for a purchase within 12 months of the policy's start, and a renovation discount for homes at least 20 years old with a documented new roof and a heating system replaced within the last 10 years. It also credits LEED or NAHB green-certified homes, gated communities and protective devices from burglar and fire alarms to water and temperature alert systems, generators and deadbolts. Mobile homes can earn approved-park, doublewide, new-home and tie-down credits.
Where it sells and recent market moves
NYCM writes only in New York, and it has not announced any pause or nonrenewal program. Its rate changes are filed with the New York Department of Financial Services (see how rate filings work). AM Best noted in 2018 that concentration in one state exposes NYCM to New York weather events and regulation; for a homeowner, it also means the company knows upstate risks well and has a stake in staying. For background on the state market, see Home insurance in New York and the Northeast.
Claims
Home claims can be reported online through My Account, in the NYCM mobile app or by phone at 800-234-6926; the company says it answers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The app and online Claims Dashboard show claim status, and NYCM pays claims electronically where possible. For contents losses, the company asks for its Home Contents Inventory Worksheet, emailed to [email protected] with the claim number in the subject line.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best lowered NYCM Insurance Group's financial strength rating to A (Excellent) from A+ (Superior) on March 13, 2018, with a stable outlook, after re-rating the group under its revised methodology. AM Best called the group's balance sheet strongest by its capital model but cited adverse loss reserve development, mostly in auto liability. That is the latest dated rating action found; NYCM's site continued to list an AM Best rating of A in 2026.
NYCM was not ranked in J.D. Power's 2025 or 2026 home insurance studies, which cover national brands. On the auto side, it ranked highest in customer satisfaction in New York in J.D. Power's 2022 and 2023 U.S. Auto Insurance Studies.
Who it suits
NYCM suits New York homeowners who want a long-established local mutual, an independent agent and one company for home and car. The Premier forms, with extended dwelling coverage, contents replacement cost and water backup built in, are worth pricing against the basic HO-3. It suits less well anyone moving out of state, since coverage cannot follow them, or buyers who prefer to purchase directly online.
- Strengths: 125-plus years as a policyholder-owned mutual; New York's sixth-largest homeowners insurer in 2025; tiered forms with 125% or 150% dwelling extensions; a long, specific discount list including work-from-home and renovation credits.
- Weaknesses: New York only; sold only through agents; AM Best rating cut from A+ to A in 2018; the base Classic form has no water backup and settles belongings at actual cash value unless upgraded.
