Overview

Allied Trust Insurance Company is a property insurer built for hurricane country. It writes homeowners policies in Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina, and is managed from Tampa by Allied Underwriters, LLC. It sells only through independent agents and does not quote consumers directly.

Allied Trust ranked #80 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $237.7 million (0.13% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Louisiana is its biggest market: Allied Trust was the ninth-largest home insurer there in 2025, with $97.9 million in premiums and 2.82% of the state market, in a top ten led by State Farm and Allstate that also includes SageSure and SafePoint.

Like many Gulf Coast carriers, it publishes a financial stability rating from Demotech rather than an AM Best rating, and it leans heavily on reinsurance to pay hurricane claims.

History

Brian Keefer co-founded Allied Trust in 2015. He had earlier founded Family Security Insurance Company, a multi-state personal lines insurer that, by his company's account, became the leading writer of Louisiana property insurance through independent agents within 18 months of entering the state. Before that he was executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief risk officer of Bankers Insurance Group and managed Louisiana for Progressive. Keefer is president of Allied Trust and is described as its chief executive in press interviews.

The company's hardest stretch followed the 2020 and 2021 hurricane seasons. Keefer told NOLA.com, in an interview Allied Trust reprints on its site, that the company was still carrying a $27 million deficit from hurricane losses in those years, and that in one year after those storms it paid $240 million to reinsurers while taking in $230 million in premium, meaning it would have lost money even without a single claim. Allied Trust responded with a series of Louisiana rate increases, some of more than 20%.

North Carolina came next. Allied Trust says it entered the state's homeowners market in 2022 through a transition of business from Lighthouse Property Insurance, then developed and launched its own North Carolina homeowners product, sold alongside flood and boat coverage.

Homeowners coverage

Allied Trust's homeowners policy is an HO-3 covering the dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, personal liability and medical payments. Flood is excluded, as on almost every homeowners policy. Depending on the state, endorsements include additional Coverage A (extra dwelling coverage above the limit), an enhanced roof endorsement, seepage and leakage, sewer backup, limited slab and foundation coverage, equipment breakdown, service line, animal liability, identity theft and refrigerated property.

Two of those deserve attention on the Gulf Coast. The enhanced roof endorsement matters because many coastal carriers settle older roofs on an actual cash value basis or by a payment schedule (see roof payment schedules); ask the agent how your roof will be paid with and without the endorsement. Limited slab and foundation coverage matters in Texas and Louisiana, where many homes sit on concrete slabs and a leak under the slab can mean tearing out floors to reach the pipe. Also ask about the hurricane or named-storm deductible, which on coastal policies is usually a percentage of the dwelling limit. Say your dwelling limit is $300,000 and the named-storm deductible is 5%: you pay the first $15,000 of storm damage.

Beyond homeowners, Allied Trust writes dwelling fire (DP-3) policies for rental properties, condo (HO-6) and personal umbrella policies in Louisiana and Texas, and boat insurance in all four states. Flood coverage is offered through the National Flood Insurance Program via its partner Taurus and through several private flood insurers.

Discounts and savings

Allied Trust does not publish a full discount list; it says it offers money-saving discounts and points customers to their agents. Two are documented. The Louisiana Department of Insurance's 2026 report on FORTIFIED discounts, as of July 1, 2026, lists a 25% Allied Trust discount for homes with an IBHS FORTIFIED Roof designation; most insurers apply such discounts to the wind and hail portion of the premium. Louisiana law has required insurers to offer an actuarially justified FORTIFIED discount since August 1, 2023. Allied Trust also says bundling a flood policy with your home policy through Allied Trust may qualify you for a discount.

Roof quality shows up in rates too. When the company cut Louisiana rates effective December 20, 2025, Keefer said newer homes with stronger roofs saw decreases of more than 10%, against 2.3% overall.

Where it sells and recent market moves

As of its current website, Allied Trust sells homeowners policies in Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina; dwelling fire, condo and umbrella only in Louisiana and Texas; and flood and boat in all four states. The site describes these states as its current footprint and says it plans to expand.

The direction of rates is the story for its policyholders. After years of losses, NOLA.com reported that Allied Trust earned a $5 million profit in 2024 and $16 million of net income through the third quarter of 2025, based on its statutory filings. With reinsurance prices falling, the company lowered Louisiana rates 2.3% overall effective December 20, 2025, and Keefer said he expected another decrease after finalizing the next reinsurance treaty. If you are with Allied Trust in Louisiana, check your renewal for those changes; if you are shopping out of Louisiana Citizens, an Allied Trust agent can quote you.

Claims

Claims can be reported 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 844-200-2842 (844-200-ATIC), option 1, or online through Allied Trust's claim reporting site; you will need the insured's name, policy number and two forms of contact. A claim professional is assigned, a desk adjuster sets expectations and can help arrange dry-out, tarping or board-up, and a field adjuster inspects if needed. For covered damage, the desk adjuster reviews the room-by-room estimate with you before payment and works with your contractor if the estimates differ. You can use one of Allied Trust's Preferred Pros or your own contractor. A proof of loss form is available on the claims page.

Its claims leadership has handled the region's major storms: Chief Claims Officer Ron Ligocki's background includes Hurricanes Gustav, Ike, Harvey, Laura, Delta and Zeta.

Ratings and reputation

As of October 2026, Allied Trust's website states that the company carries a Financial Stability Rating of A (Exceptional) from Demotech; the site does not give the date of the most recent affirmation. Fannie Mae accepts Demotech A ratings for mortgage purposes. The company says its reinsurers are all rated A- or better by AM Best, and that, as an admitted carrier, its policies are backed by each state's guaranty association. It does not publish an AM Best financial strength rating for itself.

Who it suits

Allied Trust suits homeowners in coastal and storm-exposed parts of Louisiana, Texas and the Carolinas who want an admitted private-market policy through a local independent agent, especially owners of newer homes or homes with FORTIFIED roofs, which get the best pricing. It suits less well homeowners who want an AM Best-rated national carrier, who want to buy direct, or who need condo or rental dwelling coverage in the Carolinas, where those products are not yet offered.

  • Strengths: admitted coastal homeowners coverage in markets where options are thin; 25% FORTIFIED Roof discount in Louisiana; endorsements such as enhanced roof and limited slab and foundation coverage; Louisiana rate cut effective December 2025 after a return to profitability.
  • Weaknesses: Demotech-rated rather than AM Best-rated; small, storm-concentrated book that depends heavily on reinsurance; large Louisiana rate increases after the 2020–2021 storms; sold only through independent agents in four states.
