Overview

SafePoint Insurance is a privately held property insurer based in the Tampa area (its rating agency gives the address as Temple Terrace, Florida) that specializes in homes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. It sells only through independent agents. The group's flagship, Safepoint Insurance Company, is a Florida-domiciled insurer that writes on an admitted basis in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, New Jersey, Mississippi and Alabama and is authorized as an excess and surplus lines carrier in 41 more states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Two affiliated reciprocal exchanges carry the brand into specific markets: Manatee Insurance Exchange in Florida and Cajun Underwriters Reciprocal Exchange in Alabama and Louisiana.

The Safepoint Holdings Inc. Group ranked #54 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $418.3 million (0.22% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. Its biggest position is in Louisiana, where it was the seventh-largest home insurer in 2025 with $116.0 million in premiums and 3.34% of the market, ahead of Progressive and Allied Trust.

SafePoint is known in Louisiana for taking over homeowners left stranded by insolvent carriers after the 2020–2021 hurricanes, and in Florida for absorbing policies from Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.

History

Safepoint Insurance Company was founded in 2013, and the holding company, Safepoint Holdings, in 2015. David M. Flitman, a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society who previously worked in reinsurance at XL Re, ACE Tempest Re and Flagstone Re, has been chief executive of both since their founding. Chief underwriting officer Gus Fernandez, a Florida insurance veteran, helped establish the company while at the MacNeill Group.

SafePoint's Louisiana book grew sharply after Hurricanes Laura, Delta, Zeta and Ida. When Louisiana regulators placed State National Fire Insurance Company and Access Home Insurance Company into rehabilitation in November 2021, SafePoint assumed all of their Louisiana and Texas policies effective December 1, 2021. (State National Fire was a small Louisiana insurer, not part of Markel's State National.) After Americas Insurance Company entered receivership in January 2022, SafePoint assumed its policies effective February 1, 2022. Claims on those companies' policies from before the transfer dates went to the Louisiana Insurance Guaranty Association, not to SafePoint.

The group then added reciprocals. Cajun Underwriters Reciprocal Exchange was formed in Louisiana in June 2022 and received approval to redomesticate to Alabama on July 30, 2025. Manatee Insurance Exchange was formed in 2024 for Florida; Demotech rated it A (Exceptional) in March 2024, and Safepoint Insurance Company said it would move all of its existing Florida business to Manatee.

Homeowners coverage

SafePoint writes the standard homeowners lineup: the HO-3 for owner-occupied homes, HO-6 condo and HO-4 renters policies, and dwelling fire policies on the DP-1 (named perils), DP-2 (broad named perils) and DP-3 (open perils) forms for rentals and other non-owner-occupied homes. See Dwelling fire policies: DP-1, DP-2 and DP-3 for how those forms differ.

Two endorsements stand out on its site. Equipment breakdown covers electrical, mechanical and pressure-system failures of items such as HVAC systems and televisions, and now extends off premises, a partial substitute for a home warranty. Identity theft coverage carries a $25,000 limit for restoration expenses, plus lost wages up to $1,000 a week for five weeks and attorney fees with the company's consent. Flood is excluded from the homeowners forms. On coastal homes, look at the hurricane deductible on the declarations page: in Florida and Louisiana it is usually a percentage of the dwelling limit rather than a flat dollar amount (see hurricane and named-storm deductibles explained).

Discounts and savings

SafePoint publishes a Florida windstorm mitigation discount schedule, the credits Florida law requires insurers to give for features documented on a wind mitigation inspection, such as roof-deck attachment, roof-to-wall connections, secondary water resistance and opening protection. In a coastal Florida home those credits can be a large share of the wind premium, so a current inspection form is worth having before you shop. SafePoint does not list other homeowners discounts on its website; ask the agent which apply in your state.

Where it sells and recent market moves

SafePoint appoints agents in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, with separate territories for eastern and western Louisiana and four Florida regions. KBRA says Safepoint Insurance Company's homeowners business is concentrated in coastal Louisiana and Texas, while Florida homeowners business now runs through Manatee.

Florida's Citizens takeout program has been a major source of growth. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation approved Safepoint Insurance Company for takeouts three times in 2023 (July 31, September 1 and September 29), and approved Manatee Insurance Exchange in at least 10 rounds from July 2024 through March 16, 2026, with the latest assumption dates on June 16, August 18 and September 15, 2026. Read a takeout notice carefully: under Florida law, a primary residence that receives a takeout offer from an authorized insurer loses Citizens eligibility unless the offer is more than 20% above the comparable Citizens renewal premium (see takeout policy).

Claims

Report a new claim 24 hours a day at 866-347-5131 (option 1 for hurricane claims), at the 24-hour claims line 855-252-4615 (855-CLAIM15), by email at [email protected], or through the customer portal. SafePoint says an adjuster will contact you within 24 hours. Field adjusters do not make final coverage decisions; they report to examiners who approve payment and send a check with a copy of the estimate. For water losses, SafePoint can send an approved mitigation company whose representative will advise you free of charge; you are not obligated to hire it.

The company says it has handled claims from more than 15 named storms, including Irma, Laura, Ida, Ian, Helene and Milton, has never used more than half of its claims-paying capacity in a single event or year, and has handled more than 90% of catastrophe claims since 2017 with its own staff, including in-house field adjusters.

Ratings and reputation

SafePoint is not rated by AM Best. Its website says Demotech rates Safepoint A (Exceptional), and Demotech assigned Manatee Insurance Exchange an A (Exceptional) in March 2024. KBRA affirmed Safepoint Insurance Company's BBB+ insurance financial strength rating and the BBB ratings of Manatee and Cajun on July 2, 2026, all with stable outlooks. KBRA credited a well-structured catastrophe reinsurance program, improved risk-based capital, experienced management and conservative reserving, but flagged event risk, heavy reliance on reinsurance, concentration in a few states and products, and high financial leverage at Cajun and moderate leverage at Manatee, which are funded partly with surplus notes. SafePoint says its MGA companies had combined surplus of more than $272 million at the end of 2025.

Who it suits

SafePoint suits owners of coastal homes in Louisiana, Texas and Florida who want a private, admitted policy through a local independent agent, including Citizens policyholders offered a Manatee takeout. It suits less well buyers who require an AM Best-rated insurer, want a long list of discounts, or prefer to buy online.

  • Strengths: seventh-largest home insurer in Louisiana; Demotech A and KBRA BBB+ (stable), affirmed July 2026; long experience with Gulf hurricanes and in-house catastrophe adjusting; equipment breakdown and identity theft endorsements.
  • Weaknesses: no AM Best rating; KBRA cites heavy reliance on reinsurance, geographic concentration and leverage at the reciprocals; few published discounts beyond Florida wind mitigation credits; agent-only, with no direct sales.
