Overview

Orion180 is a Melbourne, Florida homeowners insurance group that sells only through independent agents. It owns two insurers, both domiciled in Indiana: Orion180 Insurance Company, a surplus lines carrier used mainly for coastal homes and its FLEX product, and Orion180 Select Insurance Company, an admitted carrier used mainly for inland homes. Its agency and underwriting arm is Orion180 Insurance Services LLC.

The ORION180 Group ranked #53 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $441.4 million (0.23% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data. It is a top 10 home insurer in two Gulf states: eighth in Mississippi (3.93% of the market) and ninth in Alabama (1.89%). In its September 2026 IPO announcement, Orion180 called itself the second-largest excess and surplus lines homeowners insurer in the country by direct written premium.

The company says it works with more than 10,000 partner agents and has served more than 625,000 customers. Its selling points are flexible coverage design, its MY180 app and agent platform, and a willingness to write coastal homes many admitted carriers avoid.

History

Kenneth Gregg founded Orion180 in 2016, and it began operations in 2018 as a managing general underwriter, writing homeowners business on other insurers' paper. By early 2023 it had about $150 million in written premium and more than 80,000 policyholders in six Southeastern states. Orion180 Insurance Company received its Indiana certificate of authority on June 16, 2022, and began writing non-admitted homeowners policies on December 1, 2022, in coastal Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina, turning the MGA into a full carrier. In 2023 it closed a $42.5 million senior secured credit facility led by Regions Bank to add capital to both carriers.

Florida regulators approved both carriers in August 2023, and the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation counted Orion180 and Orion180 Select among the new insurers that entered the state after its 2022–2023 reforms. Orion180 Select carried the company into Georgia and Indiana and then Arizona, its first Western state. FLEX Home Insurance launched in Texas and later reached Florida, Massachusetts, California and Colorado.

On September 17, 2026, Orion180 Insurance Group priced an initial public offering of 20 million Class A shares at $12 each, with trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker OIG starting September 18. Gregg remains chief executive.

Homeowners coverage

The standard Orion180 Home Insurance policy covers the usual six parts, dwelling (Coverage A) through medical payments to others (Coverage F), for owner-occupied single-family homes deeded to the first named insured. Townhomes and secondary homes may qualify; any rental exposure moves the home to the DP Landlord policy instead.

FLEX is the distinctive product. It is written on a surplus lines basis and starts with basic perils such as fire and lightning, letting the policyholder add wind, storm or water damage, adjust personal property and liability limits, and choose deductibles and an optional copay. The roof can be insured at replacement cost, actual cash value or stated value depending on its age and condition, so read that line on the quote: an ACV roof pays only the depreciated value (see Roof payment schedules and ACV roof endorsements). Orion180 says premiums are held steady for two terms, and claim-free policyholders may earn deductible reductions or premium refunds. The flexibility cuts both ways. A FLEX policy without wind or water coverage is cheaper because it leaves out the losses coastal homes most often suffer.

Water damage is another detail to check. Orion180 offers its AWTOS automatic water shutoff valve to policyholders at no cost (monitoring is $10 a month); once a licensed plumber installs and activates it, the company removes the policy's non-weather water damage sublimit and gives 10% off the next renewal, up to $150 (see water leak sensors and shutoff valves: discounts and value). Orion180 also sells private flood insurance in several states, including California since August 2026, and jewelry coverage through Jewelers Mutual.

Discounts and savings

Orion180 lists loss-free, tree-free yard (no trees near the house that could fall on it), home buyer (policy bought within 12 months of purchase), Golden Age (policyholders 60 and older), tankless water heater, military and first responder, and protective devices such as monitored burglar and fire alarms. The AWTOS credit is on top of these, and DP Landlord customers with another Orion180 policy get a companion policy discount. Your agent applies the discounts, and availability varies by state.

Where it sells and recent market moves

Orion180 sells in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. KBRA said in June 2025 that Orion180 Insurance Company was admitted in Indiana and authorized to write surplus lines homeowners business in 32 states, and in June 2026 that it had meaningfully expanded into Texas, California and Florida in 2025 and Colorado in 2026.

In Florida, regulators approved Orion180 Select on July 31, 2024 to take policies out of Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, with an October 22, 2024 assumption date (see depopulation and takeout offers from state insurers of last resort). Growth has been rapid: Orion180 says written premium grew 69% in 2025. For the June 2026 treaty year it bought $1.15 billion of reinsurance covering both carriers from 41 reinsurers, a 36% increase over its 2025 tower of $845 million. The company says it has not abandoned any state it has entered. As a public company, its growth, reserves and catastrophe losses will now be reported to shareholders every quarter.

Claims

Claims can be filed online 24/7, in the MY180 app or by calling 866-590-3550; after-hours and emergency claims go to 833-550-1914. To check an existing claim, call 866-590-3550 and press 1, then 2, or email [email protected] with your policy number and last name in the subject line. Orion180 advertises a 14-day average claims resolution time, a company figure rather than an audited measure.

Ratings and reputation

Orion180 is not rated by AM Best. KBRA (Kroll Bond Rating Agency) assigned Orion180 Insurance Company a BBB+ insurance financial strength rating in June 2023 and affirmed it, with a stable outlook, on June 11, 2026, citing a risk-based capital ratio of 430% at year-end 2025 and a conservative investment portfolio, while noting concentration by product and geography. A KBRA BBB+ meets the BBB minimum Fannie Mae accepts for mortgaged homes. KBRA's releases cover Orion180 Insurance Company only, not Orion180 Select.

Orion180's financial strength rests heavily on reinsurance: its $1.15 billion 2026 reinsurance program is more than 2.5 times its 2025 direct homeowners premium. Customer reviews the company cites (a 4.8 average on Google) are self-reported marketing figures, not regulatory complaint data.

Who it suits

Orion180 suits homeowners in coastal Alabama, Mississippi, the Carolinas, Florida and Texas who have been turned away by admitted carriers, and buyers anywhere in its footprint who want to trade coverage for premium deliberately with an agent's help. It suits less well anyone who wants a standard, state-approved form with guaranty fund protection on a coastal home, or who is not comfortable reviewing which perils and roof terms a FLEX policy includes.

  • Strengths: top 10 market positions in Alabama and Mississippi; KBRA BBB+ (stable), affirmed June 2026; FLEX lets you choose perils, deductibles and roof valuation; a free water shutoff valve that removes the non-weather water sublimit; $1.15 billion of 2026 reinsurance.
  • Weaknesses: much coastal and FLEX business is surplus lines, outside state rate approval and guaranty fund protection; no AM Best rating; ACV or stated-value roofs and optional wind can leave gaps; agent-only, with no direct online purchase; a young carrier that only began writing on its own paper in December 2022.
