Overview

Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Company (HMF) is one of South Korea's largest property and casualty insurers, and its United States Branch is the company named on a growing number of Hawaii homeowners policies. In Hawaii it writes through Hawaiian Hurricane Group (HHG), a Hawaii-based managing agency that designs the products, appoints agents and services policies, while HMF's U.S. Branch is the insurer that carries the risk and pays claims. If your declarations page says Hyundai Marine & Fire and your bills come from HHG, that is why.

The U.S. Branch wrote $24.5 million of homeowners premiums in Hawaii in 2025, 3.79% of the state market, which made it the 8th-largest homeowners insurer in Hawaii, according to NAIC market share data. It is not a national homeowners player and does not rank in the U.S. top 100. Its Hawaii homeowners loss ratio for 2025 was under 8%, based on the same NAIC data, a single year's figure that can swing sharply when a hurricane hits.

Hawaii homeowners reach it only through an independent agent appointed with HHG and HMF; there is no direct online sale.

History

The parent company was incorporated in Korea in 1955 and is publicly traded; AM Best estimates it held about 17% of South Korea's non-life market in 2025. Its U.S. Branch began operating on December 4, 1992, using California as its port of entry, according to a California Department of Insurance examination report as of year-end 2024. The branch exists mainly to insure Hyundai group companies such as Hyundai and Kia and their U.S. parts suppliers, and its largest market is New York.

Homeowners business came later and through partners. In 2015 the branch entered the California homeowners market with HO-2, HO-3 and dwelling fire forms sold through King Insurance's independent agents. In Hawaii, HHG, founded in 2013 to write hurricane coverage rated specifically for the islands, launched a Hyundai homeowners policy in the spring of 2022 as a companion to its hurricane-only product. The branch's Hawaii premiums grew quickly: the California exam reports $16.8 million of Hawaii direct premium in 2024, 12.7% of the branch's total, and homeowners was the branch's largest line at $56.0 million. At the end of 2024 the branch was licensed in Alabama, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Oregon.

Homeowners coverage

HHG and HMF sell two policies in Hawaii: a hurricane-only policy for residential property on every island, and a homeowners policy that can sit alongside it. Most Hawaii homeowners policies exclude hurricane, and the Insurance Division's 2026 sample premium guide lists Hyundai among the few insurers that quote a homeowners policy with hurricane coverage included. Hurricane-only policies are fully earned: if you cancel, you get no refund.

HHG says its homeowners product breaks from the usual fixed-percentage structure, letting agents set coverage limits and deductibles separately rather than forcing, for example, contents at a set share of the dwelling limit. It underwrites with what it calls a Feature Underwriting and Rating Approach, rating the foundation, roof type and improvements instead of leaning on the home's age. The feature most relevant to Hawaii's older housing stock is its treatment of the ordinance or law coverage exclusion: when you carry replacement cost, HHG mitigates the exclusion without a separate surcharge, so the extra cost of rebuilding to current code is not left entirely to you. HHG notes that code upgrades can add 30% or more to a repair bill (see ordinance or law coverage: paying to rebuild to code).

Flood is not included. HHG works with Neptune Flood to quote private flood insurance through your agent. To quote, the agent needs the property address, records of any roof replacement, and current digital inspection photos of the home.

Discounts and savings

HHG does not publish a list of discounts. Its pitch is pricing built on structural features and flexible limits, so the main levers are your choice of deductible and documented upgrades such as a newer roof. You can pay in full or in four installments with a $6 fee per installment.

Where it sells and recent market moves

For homeowners, Hyundai's U.S. Branch is a Hawaii story. In the Insurance Division's sample for a $400,000 Oahu home with hurricane included (rates effective December 1, 2025), Hyundai's annual premium was $853 to $1,043 for a 2008 double-wall wood home and $805 to $993 for a 2000 masonry home, depending on fire protection class, but $2,691 for a 1972 single-wall wood home. Those are illustrations, not quotes, but they show how heavily construction weighs in its rating. The branch reinsures most of its Hawaii homeowners risk: the California exam describes a quota share treaty under which it keeps 20% and cedes 80% to reinsurers, up to $230 million per event.

Claims

Report claims online through HHG's claims page, which sends you to Sedgwick Claims Management Services, the third-party administrator that has handled the branch's Hawaii claims since 2022. Use your HUR policy number for a hurricane claim and your AOP number for a homeowners claim; questions on an open claim go to Sedgwick with your claim number. Your agent is listed on your declarations page and can help start a claim. After a hurricane, expect the hurricane policy's own hurricane deductible to apply to wind damage (see hurricane and named-storm deductibles explained).

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed Hyundai Marine & Fire's Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) and Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of "a," with a stable outlook, on June 19, 2026, citing risk-adjusted capital at the strongest level and long relationships with Hyundai group companies. The U.S. Branch is part of the same legal company, and HHG cites this A rating. The 2026 affirmation followed similar affirmations in earlier years, including June 2025.

Who it suits

Hyundai Marine & Fire, through HHG, suits Hawaii homeowners who want hurricane protection from an A-rated carrier, owners of older homes who are exposed to the ordinance or law gap, and buyers who prefer to set limits and deductibles line by line with an independent agent. It suits less well anyone who wants to buy online or by phone directly, owners outside Hawaii, or those who want one company for home and auto.

  • Strengths: AM Best A (Excellent) parent affirmed in June 2026; homeowners and hurricane coverage from one carrier; ordinance or law exclusion mitigated with replacement cost; rating based on structural features rather than age alone.
  • Weaknesses: sold only through appointed agents, with no published discounts or main customer phone line from the insurer itself; claims handled by a third-party administrator; hurricane policies are not refundable once in force; older wood-frame homes price much higher in the state's sample.
