Overview
Selective Insurance Group is a New Jersey property and casualty insurer best known for commercial insurance sold through independent agents. Homeowners coverage is a small part of a large company: Standard Personal Lines (homeowners, auto, condo, renters and umbrella) made up 8% of Selective's $4.9 billion of 2025 net premiums written, while commercial lines made up 79%. Selective Insurance Group ranked #87 among U.S. homeowners insurance groups by 2025 direct premiums written, with $217.0 million (0.11% of the national market), according to NAIC market share data.
Selective sells personal lines in 15 states: Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. You can only buy through an agent; about 730 of its agencies sell its personal lines. Its average personal lines premium per policyholder was about $4,100 in 2025, a sign of the larger homes and multi-policy households it now targets. It is also one of the biggest Write Your Own carriers in the National Flood Insurance Program, so many homeowners see Selective's name on a federal flood policy even where it sells no homeowners coverage.
The company is a publicly traded stock insurance company (Nasdaq: SIGI). John J. Marchioni is chairman, president and chief executive officer.
History
Selective traces its start to a runaway horse. In the 1920s Daniel L.B. Smith ran general stores in Sussex County, New Jersey; after a friend who was an insurance agent wrecked Smith's borrowed carriage and Smith refused payment, the agent handed him his farm and home accounts. Smith opened an agency in the front window of his Branchville store and in 1926, with $20,000 and several colleagues, founded Selected Risks Insurance Company. It became a stock company, Selected Risks Indemnity Company, in 1928, and added Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C. as its first steps beyond New Jersey, followed by Rhode Island, Connecticut and West Virginia in 1944 and 1945.
The company built its business on independent agents, field underwriting and field claims staff. Gregory E. Murphy became chairman, president and CEO in 2000 and led its growth into what it calls a super-regional carrier; Marchioni, who once ran personal lines and flood, became CEO in February 2020 and chairman in May 2022. Selective celebrated its 100th year in 2026, when AM Best's annual list ranked it the 35th-largest U.S. property and casualty group. It is moving many Branchville operations, including the executive team, to an office in Short Hills, New Jersey, between mid-2026 and 2029.
Personal lines went through a hard reset. The segment's combined ratio was 121.7% in 2023 and 109.3% in 2024, meaning Selective paid out far more in claims and expenses than it collected. Its response was steep rate increases and a deliberate shift to what it calls the mass-affluent market.
Homeowners coverage
The base policy carries the standard coverages: dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, personal liability and medical payments to others. Separate policies cover condos, townhouses and renters, and Selective sells umbrella and auto alongside.
Selective's optional endorsements are broader than most regional carriers': service line coverage with additional living expense, home systems protection (an equipment breakdown coverage cover for central air, boilers, furnaces and installed sump pumps), identity protection, home cyber protection, scheduled coverage for wine and spirits collections, and an undamaged roofing and siding materials endorsement that replaces all roofing or siding after a covered loss, not just the damaged slope or wall (not yet available in New Jersey; see matching coverage). For water, there is hydrostatic pressure coverage for water that leaks or seeps into the home, an inland flood endorsement for homes in low- to moderate-risk flood zones, and NFIP flood policies.
Three enhancement packages sit above the base form: the Platinum Policy, built for high-value homes, with guaranteed replacement cost for non-building structures, coverage for lost jewelry and cash-out options; The Selective Edge; and Summit Elite. Hydrostatic pressure coverage is available only to policyholders with one of the three. Ask the agent which package your quote is built on, because the endorsements available change with it. Your own policy form and your state's amendatory endorsements control what is covered.
Discounts and savings
Selective's homeowners page lists discounts for smoke, burglar and fire alarms, automatic sprinklers and smart home safety devices; for quoting at least 15 days before your current policy renews; and for paying on time. Eligible policyholders can also receive a free LeakBot water-leak monitor with a plumbing repair plan and a free Ting electrical-fire sensor, both offered by email. The PaySync plan spreads payments for customers who want flexible billing.
Where it sells and recent market moves
Homeowners coverage is sold in the 15 states listed above; New York and the other Northeastern states where Selective writes commercial insurance are not on the personal lines list. Selective's investor materials describe "strict coastal guidelines" for catastrophe exposure, so expect tighter underwriting near the shore.
The bigger story is repositioning. In 2025 Selective's personal lines net premiums written fell 8% to $397.7 million, new business premiums fell 37% and new policy counts fell 50%. The company attributes the drop to a difficult rate environment in New Jersey and South Carolina, competition after its own rate increases, and its focus on mass-affluent households, where it says nearly all new business now comes from. Renewal pure price increases averaged 18.6% in 2025 and 9.6% in the first half of 2026. The combined ratio improved to 100.6% for 2025 and 94.1% for the first half of 2026. Selective says it expects personal lines growth only "in states where pricing aligns with our profitability objectives," which in practice means it is not chasing volume.
Claims
Homeowners claims can be reported 24/7 through the MySelective account or mobile app, or by calling 866-455-9969. Flood claims under NFIP policies go to a separate flood unit at 877-348-0552 or online. An online lookup by date of loss or policy number gives the assigned adjuster's contact information. Selective's 2025 annual report says its personal lines underwriting is centralized and highly automated; its claims organization also runs a staff counsel operation with 11 offices that defends policyholders in liability suits.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) financial strength rating of Selective's pooled insurance companies on December 4, 2025, with a stable outlook. It cited the strongest level of risk-adjusted capitalization, balanced against catastrophe exposure and several years of adverse reserve development. Selective's second-quarter 2026 investor presentation lists an A rating from S&P, A2 from Moody's and A+ from Fitch.
Who it suits
Selective fits homeowners in its 15 states who want an independent agent and value the optional coverages it offers, such as service line, equipment breakdown, hydrostatic pressure and full roof or siding replacement, particularly owners of larger homes who can place auto and umbrella with the same company. It is a weaker fit for budget shoppers: the company has spent three years raising rates and steering away from business outside its target market.
- Strengths: A+ (Superior) from AM Best (December 2025) plus A from S&P and A2 from Moody's; an unusually wide endorsement menu, including undamaged roofing and siding replacement and hydrostatic pressure; free leak and electrical-fire sensors; personal lines combined ratio back below 100% in the first half of 2026.
- Weaknesses: sold in only 15 states and only through agents; renewal price increases of 18.6% in 2025; new business cut sharply as it narrows its target market; personal lines are a small part of a commercial-focused company.
